Thus, TMS’ 16th anniversary will be celebrated exactly two weeks from today. Johan passed away in Oslo, Norway on Sat 17 Feb 2024 at 8 a.m. He was 93. RIP dear friend and mentor.

Galtung was jailed for six months at age 24 for refusing military service as a conscientious objector, unlawful at the time in Norway. This single event would set in motion a lifetime of groundbreaking peace work (over 170 books written in 60 years, +++). RIP

Rosa, born 1946, is founder-editor of the pioneering Peace Journalism website, TRANSCEND Media Service-TMS (from 2008), an assistant to Prof. Johan Galtung at the TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment, and recipient of the Psychologists for Social Responsibility’s 2017 Anthony J. Marsella Prize for the Psychology of Peace and Social Justice. He is on the Global Advisory Board of Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies and completed his B.A., M.A., and graduate Ph.D. work in the fields of Communication-Journalism and Political Science-Peace Studies/International Relations at the University of Hawai’i. Originally from Brazil, he lives presently in Porto, Portugal. Antonio was educated in the USA where he lived for 20 years; in Europe-India since 1994.

22 Apr 2020 – The excerpt below is from Carl Sagan’s book, Pale Blue Dot, and it was inspired by an image recorded by Voyager-1 on 14 Feb 1990. As the spacecraft was leaving the solar system for its no-return outer-space exploration trip, NASA technicians redirected the camera for a last photo of Planet Earth behind. Voyager was about 6.4 billion kilometers (4 billion miles) away when it captured this unique, historical, unflattering portrait of the world. Among light rays from the Sun, our Earth appears as a tiny, almost invisible point of light 0.12 pixel in size in the beam to the right of the frame. The landmark photo was by Sagan’s request.

WikiLeaks’ War Diaries provided evidence that the US government committed war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. We, journalists and journalistic organizations around the globe, express our grave concern for Mr Assange’s wellbeing, for his continued detention and for the draconian espionage charges. This case stands at the heart of the principle of free speech and free press.

Galtung was jailed in Norway for six months at age 24 as a Conscientious Objector to serving in the military, after having done 12 months of civilian service, the same time as those doing military service. He agreed to serve an extra 6 months if he could work for peace, but that was refused. In jail he wrote his first book, Gandhi’s Political Ethics, together with his mentor, Arne Næss. This event would trigger a world-changing lifetime work for peace: 170 books, plus.

Prof. Johan Vincent Galtung performing the famous anti-militaristic ode, Le Déserteur, composed by Boris Vian in 1954. The exquisite artwork is by Xiaonan. Galtung was jailed for six months at age 24 for refusing military service as a conscientious objector, unlawful at the time in Norway. This event would set in motion a lifetime of groundbreaking peace work (over 170 books in his 89 years, +++).
