{"id":10066,"date":"2011-02-14T00:00:14","date_gmt":"2011-02-13T23:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=10066"},"modified":"2011-02-11T12:17:39","modified_gmt":"2011-02-11T11:17:39","slug":"investing-in-world-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2011\/02\/investing-in-world-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"Investing in World Peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A Poem<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Peace is not in the investment portfolio,<br \/>\nPeace is not a futures option,<br \/>\nPeace is not profitable,<br \/>\nYet we all profit from peace.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism of supply and demand,<br \/>\nMarket wants rather than needs,<br \/>\nIt is how we determine value.<\/p>\n<p>Wealth becomes reward,<br \/>\nStatus becomes success,<br \/>\nBelonging is part of the club,<br \/>\nFor when one is seen to be,<br \/>\nThe wheels of industry keep turning.<\/p>\n<p>For the industrial military complex is a valued asset,<br \/>\nIt is a psychological complex deeply divided,<br \/>\nA million dollars a minute is the investment portfolio that yields real returns,<br \/>\nProfits over people,<br \/>\nPain over conflict resolution,<br \/>\nAs we build smart bombs that discriminate,<br \/>\nWe explode bunker busters (mini nukes) that cause cancer,<br \/>\nWe destroy whole cities to maximize shock and burn tactics,<br \/>\nWe build unmanned drones to minimize body bags for CNN,<br \/>\nWe place power in the service of force,<br \/>\nAnd in the end we bill this as another peace process,<br \/>\nYet this is not the true face of peace,<br \/>\nPeace comes in service as a true friend,<br \/>\nFor the benefit of all.<\/p>\n<p>Peace education is investing in your children<br \/>\nIt is an intangible,<br \/>\nAn untouchable,<br \/>\nIt can\u2019t be displayed as an act of pride,<br \/>\nFor the value cannot be seen as a medium of exchange,<br \/>\nIt is generated through gentle acts of kindness,<br \/>\nIt is built through positive affirmation of ourselves and each other,<br \/>\nThrough responding, caring, nurturing,<br \/>\nSounds like a motherhood statement,<br \/>\nFor there is seldom recognition in real service with a smile,<br \/>\nWhich is how you know best interest is placed above self interest,<br \/>\nSelf interest will always promote itself and justify cruel acts.<\/p>\n<p>For when we value honesty over deception,<br \/>\nWhen we value working together rather than causing division for the other is wrong,<br \/>\nWhen we value freedom of speech over differing perspectives as democracy,<br \/>\nWhen we value what is real rather than material gain,<br \/>\nWe will find peace emerges as a pearl from the hard shell,<br \/>\nWe see the purpose rather than plan,<br \/>\nWe feel the enjoyment rather than yield,<br \/>\nFor one does not need profit to motivate when the reward is the service itself.<\/p>\n<p>For what we truly value we invest in,<br \/>\nPeace is the middle path that is inclusive,<br \/>\nFor there are no winners or losers,<br \/>\nThere are no failures or successes,<br \/>\nSimply differences that reflect diversity,<br \/>\nWhere the level playing field is seen as equal opportunity,<br \/>\nThere is no superiority or inferiority,<br \/>\nWhen every person is unique.<\/p>\n<p>For peace is non discriminating,<br \/>\nFor it will never argue to win,<br \/>\nSimply learn from opponents as teachers,<br \/>\nAs this is the spirit of acceptance,<br \/>\nIt is the 4 noble truths,<br \/>\nIt is the 4 way test of truth, fairness, goodwill, friendship and true benefit,<br \/>\nFor this is the free market not for sale,<br \/>\nAs peace is the only investment that is sustainable if we are to have a future to invest in.<\/p>\n<p>_____________________<\/p>\n<p><em>Susan Carew is a Rotary Peace Scholar (Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok), a Peace Studies Graduate (La Trobe University, Melbourne) and a World Peace Clown, all rolled into one.
