Tufted, shades of a healing bruise,
\nNow they, desultory, scatter,
\nDistance an imagined cleft from where we lie,
\nOur cold moist furrow, this our earth,
\nOur earthly flesh without the beat of time \u2013
\nSo do the scents spill through the skyward eye<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when \u2013 was it you who turned? \u2013
\nPerhaps the ancient rivulets are parched,
\nWhichever way we go a pedantry<\/p>\n

But you must have remembered that evening,
\nThe dilapidated theatre, percussive rain,
\nSomehow the actress leaned into our breath
\nAs she gestured, a letter torn, a forgotten candle
\nBlazing its hue across her cheek,
\nHer slipping long away upstage<\/p>\n

The wet curb under the lamp\u00a0\u00a0 seemed gold
\nThat night as we stepped into a lesser dark:
\nWe wondered how she mused,
\nDid she drink herself to death each day
\nBefore the sacrifice, or did she hunt
\nAlong the streets, an unseen quiver full
\nThat begged for a stronger hand<\/p>\n

So many years or days, cobbled sighs,
\nAll the rising, spinning up, to this,
\nOur brimful gash:
\nNo seeing but in memory,
\nNo sense but joined,
\nNo whispering except in dance
