Physical dependence is not addiction.\u201d So reads one of many articles that defend opioids and blame their\u00a0<em>restrictions<\/em> for the nation\u2019s opioid crisis. Right.<\/p>\n<p>When journalists present evidence of a prescription drug being dangerous, ineffective, unethically marketed and even unnecessary we are often met with: \u201cHow dare you suggest I am not sick?\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re not taking my drugs!\u201d They sound like gun advocates whose response to better background check laws for guns is \u201cyou\u2019re not taking my gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to aggressive Pharma marketing, seven out of ten Americans now take a prescription drug and many of the drugs are far from safe.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100 people a day die in the US from opioids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Statins are linked to memory loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>GERD meds are linked to early<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heartburn-drugs-proton-pump-inhibitors-ppi-risks-prilosec-nexium-prevacid\/\" > death risks<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>SSRI antidepressants are\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/2016\/03\/14\/antidepressants-can-raise-the-risk-of-suicide-biggest-ever-revie\/\" >linked <\/a>to suicide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pharma has succeeded, through millions of dollars of advertising, in doing two cagey things: it has convinced people who might actually be fine that they have \u201cdepression,\u201d GERD and other conditions and it has downplayed the risks of drugs to treat those conditions. Pharma\u2019s maneuver affects more than the drug takers, it raises everyone\u2019s health care costs and taxes through selling expensive, brand-name drugs. Usually safer and less expensive drugs are available\u2014if people even need drugs at all. Often they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Consider SSRI antidepressants. Before the advent of Prozac, depression was not a permanent condition for which people took lifelong drugs. It was a self-limited condition that would go away on its own, respond to psychotherapy and\/or respond to short-term drugs. Now, roughly a quarter of the population takes antidepressants, sometimes, shockingly, for decades. Often their \u201cdepression\u201d is really problems with money, health, jobs and family. When SSRI antidepressants stop working because they have been used for too long or\u00a0<em>don\u2019t work to begin with<\/em> because the person never had \u201cdepression,\u201d Pharma tells patients they\u00a0<em>need to add more expensive drugs,<\/em> furthering profiting, and patients comply. No wonder Pharma is the third most lucrative industry in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas it takes thirty seconds for a doctor to prescribe such psychoactive drugs, it can take\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/martha-rosenberg\/do-you-have-to-stay-on-ps_b_1944845.html\" >years <\/a>for a person to titrate off them, faced with a host of very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. SSRI antidepressants also cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction and sometimes bizarre and violent behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Psychoactive drugs are especially dangerous in children. Today, millions of children are given drugs for ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders, mixed manias, pervasive development disorders and more, pushed by their parents, doctors and teachers. Their chances of going on to lead drug-free lives are very slim\u2014they have never been \u201cstraight\u201d\u2014and Pharma has actual marketing plans to keep children on such drugs as life-long customers when they leave home.<\/p>\n<p>GERD medicines (proton pump inhibitors or PPIs) which millions have been convinced to use are\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahcmedia.com\/articles\/19449-pharmacology-wathc-ppis-clostridium-difficile-and-bone-fractures\" >linked to <\/a>dangerous \u201cC dif\u201d infections, osteoporosis, bone fractures and an\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heartburn-drugs-proton-pump-inhibitors-ppi-risks-prilosec-nexium-prevacid\/\" >increased risk<\/a> of death. Like<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cholesterol-management\/news\/20140818\/statins-side-effects-news#1\" > statins<\/a>, which were among the most popular drugs in the world, GERD meds are not as safe as originally presented. Worse, most users do not have GERD but simple heartburn.<\/p>\n<p>And opioids? In addition to addiction and death, they are<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternet.org\/personal-health\/what-big-pharma-does-not-want-you-know-about-opioid-epidemic\" > linked to<\/a> hormonal changes, constipation, a decrease in immune responses, fracture risks, liver and kidney risks, cardiopulmonary, pulmonary and congestive heart problems, sleep apnea and mental problems. In some cases, opioids actually cause rather than relieve pain a phenomenon called opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH).<\/p>\n<p>To sell its high priced, often dangerous drugs Pharma has long created phony \u201cpatient groups\u201d who lobby Congress and state Medicaid programs to pry loose our tax dollars. But \u201ckill the messenger\u201d patients are just as useful to Pharma\u2019s marketing plans.<\/p>\n<p>After a recent\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/research-shows-adhd-onset-in-childhood-only\" >scientific study<\/a> found \u201cAdult ADHD\u201d to be exaggerated if it exists at all this is what one patient wrote: \u201cExecutive dysfunction [adult ADHD[ is real and f***you for suggesting otherwise . . . You should feel really bad for publishing this f*** abomination. Way to invalidate millions of people and their lived experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than anger at doctors who hooked them on opioids or ADHD stimulant drugs like Adderall, Concerta and Vyvanse, these patients want to kill the messenger\u2013\u2013journalists who report the scam.
