{"id":107930,"date":"2018-03-26T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=107930"},"modified":"2018-03-21T13:26:09","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T13:26:09","slug":"australia-and-singapore-prime-ministers-help-whitewash-myanmar-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/03\/australia-and-singapore-prime-ministers-help-whitewash-myanmar-genocide\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia and Singapore Prime Ministers Help Whitewash Myanmar Genocide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>20 Mar 2018 &#8211; <\/em>I just returned from Paris where I had a quite intense 2-day (and evening) meeting with other fellow activists deeply concerned with the plight of the Rohingyas, a small number of Rohingyas who have resettled there &#8211; some 20 years ago others less than a decade, as well as a very progressive\u00a0deputee de Paris at\u00a0the Assemble Nationale and her assistant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-107931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar.jpg 504w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One Rangoon University-educated Rohingya activist who is my contemporary asked me pointedly, &#8220;Why are you so concerned about us the Rohingyas?&#8221;\u00a0 My answer was equally pointed:\u00a0because I KNOW, as a scholar, FOR A FACT that Myanmar leaders, both NLD civilian politicians and the generals, are lying to the world about the identity and history of Rohingya, and their 40-years of intentional destruction of Rohingya as a group while the public is thoroughly brainwashed I cannot stay quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I told him I am a self-respecting human &#8211; a Buddhist at that &#8211; and I can no longer identify with the lying genocidal group, leaders, or nation.<\/p>\n<p>That seems to have satisfied his intense curiosity: perhaps Zarni is mad, or get involved in the Rohingya persecution out of other ulterior motives.<\/p>\n<p>I think my Rohingya friend Ko Hla Aung is not alone in wondering why someone from a privileged Burmese &#8211; and military family &#8211; background might be an activist advocating for a homeland &#8211;<strong><em> however defined, and whatever is feasible.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have never ever been persecuted under the Burmese military rule, in whatever facade, as a student, an exile, etc.\u00a0 \u00a0I was NOT even a part of the so-called 8.8.88 Movement:\u00a0 I was already in California, when the nationwide popular uprisings erupted, more or less, organically &#8211; as opposed to a leadership circle or a group of revolutionary intellectuals, agitating and pulling it off.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar2.jpg 496w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar2-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But that didn&#8217;t stop me from throwing my lot with the courageous\u00a0 students (and other civilians) in Burma who attempted to overthrow the military rule under which we all grew up (1962-88).<\/p>\n<p>By the same token, I ain&#8217;t a Rohingya, nor a Muslim, nor religious in any sense of that word. I have never set my foot in Rakhine state, and never met a single Rohingya in my life until about 12 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is immaterial:\u00a0 they are fellow humans whom I also discovered to be my fellow countrymen.<\/p>\n<p>They are being exterminated for simply who they are as a group, and which region of the country they belong.<\/p>\n<p>I do this out of a sense of my obligation as a fellow country. As an activist who says he believes in the right of humans as equal, as a Buddhist who learned to internalize the fear of lying &#8211; particularly at the great cost to a large number of humans, as a father who feels empathy for Rohingya parents, and as a scholar who is committed to unadulterated Truths.<\/p>\n<p>Here is another scholar who admirably stands up for the Rohingya.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor Michael Charney of SOAS&#8217;s presentation\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=4f703e1775&amp;e=7447c77287\" >on Identities and Histories of Rakhine and Rohingya<\/a>at the Berlin Conference on Myanmar Genocide.<\/li>\n<li>A Canadian Jewish journalist with a Buddhist orientation asks &#8211; and answers his rhetorical question: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=086826957a&amp;e=7447c77287\" >Where Are the Righteous Burmese? All over the world.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ma Khin Mai Aung, a Burmese-American writer, civil rights lawyer and activist attempts to explain &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=72d045c185&amp;e=7447c77287\" >Why the Rohingya can&#8217;t return<\/a>&#8221; to Myanmar in her Huffiington Post essay.<\/li>\n<li>Beyond racist nationalism &#8211; I call it Myanmar&#8217;s homegrown Fascism &#8211; Myanmar government is THE REAL CULPRIT.\u00a0 \u00a0Have a read: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=d84d406742&amp;e=7447c77287\" >Myanmar willing to take back fewer than 400 Rohingya refugees<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Myanmar&#8217;s genocide and the future of the survivors is also a genuine concern for the outgoing\u00a0UN Human Rights Chief\u00a0\u00a0Zeid Ra&#8217;ad Al Hussein.\u00a0 \u00a0 Zeid writes:\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=30ace9cd0b&amp;e=7447c77287\" >\u00a0Myanmar&#8217;s infrastructure investors must commit to human rights<\/a><\/li>\n<li>But none of the world&#8217;s outcry seems to move Suu Kyi.\u00a0 This Western Australian Editor of International Affairs reached his own verdict on Myanmar State Counsellor, which I share fully:\u00a0\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=d6983c4c77&amp;e=7447c77287\" >Aung San Suu Kyi: fallen lady has no good answers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As early as 18 June 2012, her 67th birthday, she dodged any difficult question.\u00a0 I knew.\u00a0 \u00a0I shared a panel with her, and I was asked to handle &#8220;the Rohingya question&#8221; although it was directed at her.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, if I or any activist is talking or writing about Suu Kyi, it&#8217;s not because we think she is primarily responsible for the genocide but because we use her as a media hook to tell the genocide committed by her former jailers:\u00a0 she is culpable and even criminally responsible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar3.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-107933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar3.jpg 552w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohingya-burma-myanmar3-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I personally want to see her tried at ICC, alongside Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Lt-General Kyaw Swe, ex-General Khin Nyunt, ex-General Thein Sein, ex-General Shwe Mann, Sitagu, Wirathu, Zaw Htay, Ye Htut, Rakhine demagogues Dr Aye Chan and Dr Aung Maung.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/maungzarni.us17.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=4516464311fb7543485f27055&amp;id=9ad56450df&amp;e=7447c77287\" >Some ASEAN leaders and Australian Prime Minister <\/a>are definitely whitewashing Myanmar genocide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Intense public attention makes it difficult to solve&#8221; (Myanmar genocide), so says Singapore Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>_______________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/maung-zarni-1-e1498209871819.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-89761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/maung-zarni-1-e1498209871819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"102\" \/><\/a><em>A Buddhist humanist from Burma, Maung Zarni is a member of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment<\/a><em>, <\/em><em>former Visiting Lecturer with Harvard Medical School, specializing in racism and violence in Burma and Sri Lanka, and Non-resident Scholar in Genocide Studies with Documentation Center \u2013 Cambodia.\u00a0 His analyses have appeared in leading newspapers including the <\/em>New York Times, The Guardian <em>and<\/em> the Times<em>.
