22 Mar 2018 – <\/em>The U.S.\u00a0Congress has one month to counter the Trump administration’s approval of a US$1 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, with almost 7,000 anti-tank missiles thrown into the deal.<\/p>\n

The White House<\/strong> informed lawmakers Thursday they have\u00a030 days to stop the arsenal set aside for Saudi Arabia’s military, which includes tanks, helicopters, service, support and\u00a06,600 missiles.<\/p>\n

The decision comes just as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman<\/strong> begins his United States tour,\u00a0two days after he was pictured shaking hands with President\u00a0Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia bought\u00a0the almost 7,000 TOW missiles<\/strong> \u2013 plus\u00a0an additional 96 for training purposes \u2013 for a total of US$670 million, the U.S. State Department said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“The proposed sale of TOW 2B missiles and technical support will advance Saudi Arabia’s efforts to develop an integrated ground defense capability,”\u00a0the department said, noting that the sale would improve the security of an important ally in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The State Department also said it has\u00a0approved the possible sale of\u00a0US$300 million in\u00a0parts for Saudi Arabia’s fleet of Abrams tanks and\u00a0armored vehicles.<\/p>\n

It has also given\u00a0the green light for the proposed sale of equipment and services worth US$106.8 million for Saudi’s fleet of military helicopters.<\/p>\n

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis<\/strong>\u00a0said Saudi Arabia is “part of the solution”\u00a0in Yemen<\/strong>. Despite severe criticism, the Saudi coalition continues to be U.S.-supported,\u00a0targeting\u00a0Houthi rebels and causing\u00a0numerous civilian casualties.<\/p>\n
