{"id":108544,"date":"2018-04-02T12:00:13","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T11:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=108544"},"modified":"2018-03-30T18:29:27","modified_gmt":"2018-03-30T17:29:27","slug":"un-appeals-for-support-to-tackle-massive-health-needs-of-rohingya-refugees-in-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/04\/un-appeals-for-support-to-tackle-massive-health-needs-of-rohingya-refugees-in-bangladesh\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Appeals for Support to Tackle \u2018Massive\u2019 Health Needs of Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/un-news-logo.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-108547 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/un-news-logo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><em>With relief agencies in Bangladesh struggling to assist more than a million vulnerable Rohingya refugees crowded into makeshift camps along the country\u2019s south-east coast, the World Health Organization (WHO) today appealed for international support to help the cash strapped health sector scale up its response. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>29 Mar 2018 &#8211; <\/em>\u201cThis is one of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/bangladesh\/who-appeals-international-community-support-warns-grave-health-risks-rohingya\" >biggest humanitarian crises<\/a> in recent times,\u201d Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the WHO South-East Asia Regional Director told a partners\u2019 meeting in\u00a0Dhaka, Bangladesh\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo single agency or the Government of Bangladesh alone can meet the massive health needs of such a large population group,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Rohingya population has\u00a0settled in an area prone to cyclones, and on\u00a0terrain that will flood as soon as rains begin. \u201cThe risk of outbreak of life threatening water and vector borne diseases under such conditions is huge,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Since August 2017, nearly 700,000 minority Muslim Rohingyas have fled violence in Myanmar across the border into Bangaldesh\u2019s Cox\u2019s Bazar, joining several hundred thousand more that were already settled there in overcrowded camps.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108545\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohinghya-burma-myanmar2-bangladesh-un.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108545\" class=\"wp-image-108545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohinghya-burma-myanmar2-bangladesh-un-1024x461.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohinghya-burma-myanmar2-bangladesh-un-1024x461.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohinghya-burma-myanmar2-bangladesh-un-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohinghya-burma-myanmar2-bangladesh-un-768x346.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rohinghya-burma-myanmar2-bangladesh-un.jpg 1178w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-108545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A health worker inoculates a Rohingya girl in the Unchiprang makeshift refugee camp in Bangladesh&#8217;s Cox&#8217;s Bazar district during a UNICEF-supported measles vaccination campaign.<br \/> UNICEF\/Brown<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Coordinating the work of over 100 partners on the ground, along with the Ministry of Health, WHO has facilitated a contingency plan for the rainy season.<\/p>\n<p>To minimize the risk of diseases and deaths, the plan aims to continue health services during rains and floods.
