Maya Kosoff of Vanity Fair wrote.<br \/> (Photo: Recode)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>26 Mar 2018 &#8211; <\/em>As the fallout from Facebook&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/03\/17\/explosive-new-reports-reveal-how-pro-trump-firm-cambridge-analytica-exploited\" >Cambridge Analytica scandal<\/a> continued on Monday with the Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s (FTC) announcement that it is conducting a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openmarketsinstitute.org\/releases\/statement-barry-c-lynn-ftcs-investigation-facebook\/\" >long-overdue<\/a> probe into the tech giant&#8217;s privacy practices, many Facebook users are only now discovering the astonishing and in some cases downright &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/facebook-data-privacy-opinion\/\" >creepy<\/a>&#8221; reach of the platform&#8217;s data-mining operations, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/03\/22\/amid-deletefacebook-fervor-experts-say-time-tackle-big-data-profiteers\" >which form the foundation of its business model<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After a New Zealand man named Dylan McKay called attention in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dylanmckaynz\/status\/976368845635035138\" >viral tweet<\/a> last week to the alarming fact that Facebook had collected his &#8220;entire call history&#8221; with his partner&#8217;s mother and &#8220;metadata about every text message [he&#8217;s] ever received or sent,&#8221; other Facebook users began downloading their archive of personal data the social media giant had stored and discovered that McKay&#8217;s experience was hardly anomalous.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Downloaded my facebook data as a ZIP file<\/p>\n<p>Somehow it has my entire call history with my partner&#39;s mum <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CIRUguf4vD\" >pic.twitter.com\/CIRUguf4vD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dylan McKay (@dylanmckaynz) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dylanmckaynz\/status\/976368845635035138?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >March 21, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Based on the stories of a number of users who shared their experiences and data, <em>Ars Technica<\/em> concluded in an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2018\/03\/facebook-scraped-call-text-message-data-for-years-from-android-phones\/\" >explosive report<\/a> published on Saturday that Facebook has been scraping call and text message data from Android phones &#8220;for years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the social media giant insisted in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/03\/fact-check-your-call-and-sms-history\/\" >statement<\/a> that it only collects such data with permission\u2014which is usually requested during the process of installing particular apps such as Messenger\u2014<em>Ars<\/em> noted that this claim &#8220;contradicts the experience of several users who shared their data,&#8221; including McKay.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>&#8220;My deleted Facebook zip file contains info on every single phone cellphone call and text I made for about a year\u2014cool totally not creepy.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u2014Mat Johnson<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;While data collection was technically &#8216;opt-in,&#8217; in both these cases the opt-in was the default installation mode for Facebook&#8217;s application, not a separate notification of data collection,&#8221; <em>Ars<\/em> reported. &#8220;Facebook never explicitly revealed that the data was being collected, and it was only discovered as part of a review of the data associated with the accounts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/24\/technology\/facebook-data\/index.html\" >article<\/a> on Sunday, <em>CNN<\/em> tech reporter Sara Ashley O&#8217;Brien documented what she found after downloading the data Facebook had stored during her 14 years on the site, and it sounds remarkably similar to that of McKay and countless others.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook &#8220;had the phone number of my late grandmother who never had a Facebook account, or even an email address,&#8221; O&#8217;Brien wrote. &#8220;It preserved the conversations I had with an ex\u2014someone with whom I thought I had deleted my digital ties.
