{"id":109675,"date":"2018-04-23T12:00:37","date_gmt":"2018-04-23T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=109675"},"modified":"2018-04-23T13:17:15","modified_gmt":"2018-04-23T12:17:15","slug":"reflections-on-the-cultural-construction-of-reality-assumptions-issues-directions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/04\/reflections-on-the-cultural-construction-of-reality-assumptions-issues-directions\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on the Cultural Construction of Reality:  Assumptions, Issues, Directions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>23 Apr 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There is an <em>inherent human impulse<\/em> in the human brain and body to describe, understand, and predict the world through the processing and ordering of stimuli;<\/li>\n<li>The undamaged human brain and body not only responds to stimuli, but also <em>organizes, connects, and symbolizes stimuli; there is an effort after meaning;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>In the process and ordering of stimuli, the brain and body <em>generate patterns of explicit and implicit \u201cmeanings,\u201d<\/em> facilitating and promoting survival, adaptation, and adjustment;<\/li>\n<li>The process and product of these neural activities are, to a large extent, <em>culturally contextualized, generated, and shaped <\/em>through sensory, linguistic, behavioral, and interpersonal practices, constituting the cultural socialization process and product;<\/li>\n<li>The <em>storage of stimuli as accumulated life experience, in both representational and symbolic forms in the in the brain, and in external forms (e.g., books),<\/em> generates a shared cognitive and affective process and product;<\/li>\n<li><em>Cultural continuity occurs or is challenged across time<\/em> (i.e., past, present, and future) for both the person and the group;<\/li>\n<li><em>Individual and collective \u201cidentities\u201d are forged<\/em> through this process of change and adaptation and adjustment.<\/li>\n<li>There are <em>dynamic (i.e., changing) variations within individual and collective identities<\/em> in a given cultural context, furthering the survival, adaptation and adjustment;<\/li>\n<li><em>Through socialization, individual and group preferences and priorities are rewarded or punished<\/em>, thus promoting and\/or modifying the cultural constructions of reality (i.e., ontogenies, epistemologies, praxologies, cosmologies, ethosei, values, and behavior patterns);<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cReality\u201d is \u201cculturally constructed;\u201d <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Different cultural contexts create different realities via cultural socialization processes;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Cultural diversity is as important for human survival, adaptation, and adjustment, as is biological diversity;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Efforts and pressures after homogenization, conformity, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and denial of \u00a0diversity limit individual and collective potential and encourage risks oppression and domination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Definition of Culture: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Culture is shared learned meanings and behaviors socially transferred across time to facilitate and promote individual and collective survival, adaptation, and adjustment;<\/li>\n<li>Cultures are represented (1) internally (i.e., values, beliefs, attitudes, axioms, orientations, epistemologies, consciousness levels, perceptions, expectations, personhood, identities) and (2) externally (i.e., artifacts, roles, institutions, social structures);<\/li>\n<li>Cultural milieus can be (3) transitory (i.e. situational, even for a few minutes); (4) relatively enduring (i.e., ethno-cultural life-styles, world views); and are, in all instances, (5) dynamic (i.e., subject to change and modification as a function of individual, collective, and environmental responses);<\/li>\n<li>Cultures (6) shape and construct our realities (i.e., they contribute to our world views, perceptions, orientations), including ideas, morals, and preferences.<\/li>\n<li>Cultures pursue and achieve intentions and purposes via (7) both specific and integrated sensory input processes and patterns (e.g., sensory types and patterns) yielding situational and accumulated experiences.<\/li>\n<li>In constructing shared and individual realities, (8) experiences are coded verbally, linguistically, imagistically, proprioceptively, and viscerally. Coding shapes individual and group differences by influencing ways-of-knowing (i.e., epistemology), views of human nature and being (ontologies), and behavior practices and displays (praxiology).<\/li>\n<li>Group differences in the nature of \u201cbeing\u201d in the world can be perceived as (9) variations associated with national and societal \u201ccultures\u201d (e.g., Japanese, Chinese, Indian, German; Latino, European, American, Indigenous).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"15\">\n<li><strong> Cultural Change and Destruction<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Culturally constructed realities resist imposed change; they do not yield well to contestations. Although adjustments can and do occur, \u00a0\u00a0 consequences have often been associated with pernicious outcomes including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cultural <em>confusion,<\/em><\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>destruction,<\/em><\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>dislocation<\/em>,<\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>collapse,<\/em><\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>abuse,<\/em><\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>decline,<\/em><\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>eradication,<\/em><\/li>\n<li>cultural <em>extinction<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Culture as Term, Concept, Construct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Culture is a concept and construct.\u00a0 It is a word and terms. It joins thousands of other concepts among social, psychological, and behavioral disciplines, and is essential foundation for \u201cculture\u201d disciplines and professions.\u00a0 Debate regarding the power of \u201cwords\u201d is not new. Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Men imagine that their reason governs words, whilst, in fact, words react upon their understanding; and this has rendered philosophy and the sciences sophistical and inactive.\u00a0 Words are generally formed in a popular sense, and define things by those broad lines which are most obvious to the vulgar mind; but when a more acute understanding, or more diligent observation is anxious to vary those lines, and to adapt them more accurately to nature, words oppose it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Sir Francis Bacon, Novum Organum I, (1620), 59-60.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Culture Studies Disciplines, Specialties, Interests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many academic and professional disciplines specialties, and interests studying culture.\u00a0 These are displayed in <strong>Chart 1<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109680\" style=\"width: 508px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109680\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Reflections-Cultural-Figure.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Reflections-Cultural-Figure.png 498w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Reflections-Cultural-Figure-282x300.png 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-109680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CHART 1: EXAMPLES OF CULTURE-EMPHASIS STUDIES,<br \/>DISCIPLINES, SPECIALTIES<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There is so much more to be said, explained, debated about the concept and term culture. \u00a0In today\u2019s world, cultures have assumed ideological implications, and a contestation for dominance and control.\u00a0 \u00a0Patience is needed.
