{"id":110097,"date":"2018-04-30T12:01:26","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T11:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=110097"},"modified":"2018-04-26T13:51:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-26T12:51:33","slug":"north-koreas-suspension-of-missile-tests-should-lead-to-irreversible-commitment-to-ban-nuclear-testing-un-backed-treaty-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/04\/north-koreas-suspension-of-missile-tests-should-lead-to-irreversible-commitment-to-ban-nuclear-testing-un-backed-treaty-body\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea\u2019s Suspension of Missile Tests Should Lead to \u2018Irreversible\u2019 Commitment to Ban Nuclear Testing \u2013 UN-Backed Treaty Body"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/un-news-logo.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-109474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/un-news-logo-e1524746883441.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The world\u2019s nuclear proliferation watchdog has welcomed the announcement by the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to suspend its nuclear and missile tests and shut down its Punggye-ri atomic test site.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>25 Apr 2018 &#8211; <\/em>It added that the move should lead to a \u201csure, definite\u201d and \u201cirreversible\u201d commitment to ban nuclear testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaying is one thing, but until we have a signature and the ratification by the DPRK, to basically solidify the verbal commitment already to cease testing and close the nuclear test site, I think nothing can be for sure, definite, or irreversible,\u201d Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the UN-partner Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctbto.org\/\" >CTBTO<\/a>), told the media at a news briefing in Geneva today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can only welcome and hope for best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted that the upcoming talks between United States President Donald Trump and DPRK Kim Jong-Un could present a unique opportunity for a lasting contribution to world peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be through this negotiation [\u2026] that we open up a situation where the DPRK ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/disarmament\/wmd\/nuclear\/ctbt\/\" >Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty<\/a>, or CTBT, bans all nuclear explosions, by everyone, everywhere. It has not yet entered into force despite having been opened for signature and ratification over 21 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1996, the CTBT is nearly universal with 183 signatures and 166 ratifications.<\/p>\n<p>But 44 specific nuclear-capable nations need to ratify the Treaty before it enters into force. Of these, eight \u2013 China, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, DPRK, Pakistan and the US \u2013 are still missing.
