And conversely, if the prospects of war reduce, you can pretty much guess what happens to the fortunes of major defence companies.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_110357\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Nuclear-lego-war-military.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110357\" class=\"wp-image-110357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Nuclear-lego-war-military.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Nuclear-lego-war-military.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Nuclear-lego-war-military-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(IMAGE: clement127, Flickr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>30 Apr 2018 &#8211; <\/em>With South Korean president Moon Jae-in leading an extraordinary diplomatic \u2018assault\u2019 on North Korean president Kim Jong-un \u2013 a strategy which led to their historic meeting last week and an agreement to work towards stability in the Korean Peninsula \u2013 there are, sadly, going to be some losers from the march towards peace.<\/p>\n<p>Reports <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/04\/27\/north-south-korea-nuclear-friendly-handshake-defense-stocks-boeing\/\" >Fortune magazine<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOn Friday, while the broader stock market as measured by the S&amp;P 500 index remained largely flat, the S&amp;P Aerospace and Defense Select Industry Index fell roughly 1.3%.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe US\u2019s five largest defense contractors shed about $10.2 billion in value on Friday alone. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/12\/13\/donald-trump-twitter-lockheed-martin-stock-dump\/\" >Lockheed Martin<\/a> fell 2.5% to a valuation of about $92.1 billion; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/northrop-grumman\/\" >Northrop Grumman<\/a> slid 3.4% to $56 billion; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/general-dynamics\/\" >General Dynamics<\/a> shed 3.8% to $60.7 billion; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/raytheon\/\" >Raytheon<\/a> dropped 3.6% to $50.8 billion; and finally, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/boeing\/\" >Boeing<\/a> slid a much lesser 1% to $200.2 billion.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The news is actually a bit worse \u2013 the S&amp;P Aerospace &amp; Defense Index is actually down 4.3% since the start of the week, with investors generally nervous that we\u2019re at serious risk of entering a period of relative peace.<\/p>\n<p>The Korean peace deal, of course, has a way to go yet, but if progress continues, investors should take comfort in the reality that we\u2019ll almost certainly find a new \u2018threat\u2019 to the West to buoy US stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Early front-runners would be China and Russia, and scrutiny is likely to intensify on Iran.
