They\u2019ve just performed a short theater piece of their own devising, an exploration of gun violence and the twisting, ricocheting trajectory that one bullet can follow through a community.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s just the start of the night. This play is not merely artistic expression. At a time when student activism about gun regulation is gaining national attention, these young actors are also experienced organizers against gun violence. Using improvisation, storytelling and play, they aim to draw the audience into the struggle too.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The inspiration comes from <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mandalaforchange.com\/site\/applied-theatre\/theatre-of-the-oppressed\/\" >Theatre of the Oppressed<\/a><\/em> by<\/strong><strong> Nobel Peace Prize nominee, dramaturge Augusto Boal (1931-2009), a ramification of <\/strong><strong>Paulo Freire\u2019s (1921-1997) seminal book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Paulo-Freire-pedagogy-of-the-oppresed.pdf\" >Pedagogy of the Oppressed<\/a>. Both educators were Brazilian.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an activist and an actor,\u201d said Enyah Jackson, 17. \u201cI can put both into one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson and the other actors are all alumni of a youth organizing program called YO S.O.S. \u2014 \u201cYouth Organizing to Save Our Streets\u201d \u2014 administered by the Crown Heights Mediation Center in Brooklyn. The teens spent a year getting trained in anti-violence and anti-oppression techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in January 2017, they learned theater games under the guidance of Katy Rubin, the executive director of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/beautifultrouble.org\/theory\/theater-of-the-oppressed\/\" >Theatre of the Oppressed<\/a> NYC. It partners with community groups across the city, forming theater troupes to create original plays about the issues that affect them. As these YO S.O.S. participants neared the end of the program last spring, they began working with TONYC for what was supposed to be one performance.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they ended up performing together for nearly a year, with some cast changes as students left for college.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forum gets audience involved<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The hallmark of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mandalaforchange.com\/site\/applied-theatre\/theatre-of-the-oppressed\/\" >Theatre of the Oppressed<\/a> show is a forum afterwards, when the audience works with the actors to identify, and then try to solve, problems raised during the play.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110583\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Katy-Rubin.jpeg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110583\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-110583\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Katy-Rubin-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Katy-Rubin-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Katy-Rubin-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Katy-Rubin.jpeg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katy Rubin &#8211; LinkedIn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no performance that just ends in a performance,\u201d Rubin said. \u201cWe\u2019re not just showing a problem, we\u2019re brainstorming ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the center of this play\u2019s plot is an act of gun violence: one character, played by Khadafy \u201cMike\u201d Ramirez, 18, is shot to death outside his school by a rival, played by Jackson. The play, called \u201cThe School-to-Prison Pipeline,\u201d explores how this moment ripples through the rest of the characters\u2019 lives. Ultimately, one student is suspended from school for being too distressed by the shooting and her classmate\u2019s death to concentrate in class.<\/p>\n<p>Heather Day, who oversees YO S.O.S. as director of youth programs at the Mediation Center, said the play helps demonstrate that gun violence doesn\u2019t exist in a vacuum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery show we\u2019ve done has been about gun violence but also about a lot of other things, because these issues are interconnected,\u201d she said. \u201cFor young people, a lot of times the conversation starts with them talking about the oppression they feel at school from their teachers or from school safety officers,\u201d like the one represented in this play dragging a student to suspension.<\/p>\n<p>Every Theatre of the Oppressed performance has a facilitator, known as a Joker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe joker in a deck of cards doesn\u2019t have a suit, so is an unbiased facilitator, isn\u2019t coming in with an agenda or an answer or even what the problem is,\u201d Rubin explained. \u201cThey\u2019re really coming in with a set of tools to help identify a problem within the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every student in the YO S.O.S. alumni troupe is trained as a Joker, so they take turns leading audiences through warm-up exercises before each show to get them invested as \u201cspectators\u201d \u2014 active viewers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Audience gets to change the narrative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Joker also directs the forum afterwards. At the show in March, Gariyana Williams, 19, took on this role. At the play\u2019s conclusion, she asked audience members to name the problems the characters faced. One by one, they shared what they observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLack of compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMilitant security guards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrauma pushed to the side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After this exercise, a few individuals can replace a character in a scene with the goal of trying to solve one of the problems they witnessed.<\/p>\n<p>This is harder than it sounds. A proposed solution can open the door to another set of challenges and policy failures. One audience member replaced a distressed student mourning her classmate\u2019s death. That person\u2019s solution was to request to see the school counselor \u2014 leading to a conversation about the shortage of trained social workers on school grounds.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean a solution is out of reach. Karencia Mitchell, 16, who plays the aggressive school security guard, has become involved with another youth-led activism network that specifically campaigns for more counselors in schools. She said she hopes audiences, by becoming a part of the play, will become more actively involved in their communities afterward, too.<\/p>\n<p>The goal for any Theatre of the Oppressed show is for audience members to walk away feeling empowered to make change \u2014 to move, as Rubin put it, from \u201cWhat would I do in the character\u2019s shoes?\u201d to \u201cWhat can I do in my own shoes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The troupe members will also wrap up their experience with a sense of their own power, Jackson said. This fall, she will begin college with dreams of running for Congress on a criminal justice platform.
