His nearest challenger, Henri Falcon, received 1.8 million votes. The process was watched over by 150 international observers from over 30 countries, among them former Spanish Prime Minister Jos\u00e9 Luis Rodr\u00edguez Zapatero, who said (<strong>Telesur<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurtv.net\/english\/news\/Venezuela-After-Victory-Maduro-Calls-for-Lasting-Dialogue-20180520-0036.html\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>): \u201cI do not have any doubt about the voting process. It is an advanced automatic voting system.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111998\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NPR-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111998\" class=\"wp-image-111998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NPR-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NPR-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png 573w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NPR-Maduro-Amid-venezuela-243x300.png 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-111998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NPR (5\/21\/18) was amid many other news outlets that chose a similar headline strategy.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another election observer was former Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa, who announced via <strong>Twitter<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MashiRafael\/status\/998271732036358145\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Venezuelan elections are developing with absolute normalcy. I\u2019ve attended four polling stations. There is a permanent flow of citizenship, with short waiting and voting times. Very modern system with double control. From what I\u2019ve seen, [it\u2019s] impeccable organization.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Western media have taken an entirely different outlook to the proceedings, unanimously presenting them as seriously flawed, at best, and at worst a complete sham presided over by a dictator. The <strong>New York Times<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/20\/world\/americas\/venezuela-election.html\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>) presented the election as \u201ca contest that critics said was heavily rigged in his favor,\u201d<strong> Huffington Post<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/venezuela-elections-nicolas-maduro-wins_us_5b024c69e4b0463cdba3b9c0\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>) christened it \u201ca vote denounced as a farce cementing autocracy in the crisis-stricken OPEC nation,\u201d while <strong>NPR<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2018\/05\/21\/612918548\/venezuelas-maduro-wins-boycotted-elections-amid-charges-of-fraud\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>) stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Nicholas [sic] Maduro has easily won a second term, but his main rivals have refused to accept the results, calling the polling fraudulent\u2014a view shared by the United States and many independent observers.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apart from spelling the president\u2019s name wrong, the only source that could be an \u201cindependent\u201d observer quoted was the Washington-based, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/programs\" >State Department\u2013funded<\/a> conservative group Freedom House, a rather questionable example of an \u201cindependent observer.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111999\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NYT-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111999\" class=\"wp-image-111999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NYT-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NYT-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png 574w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/NYT-Maduro-Amid-venezuela-300x286.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-111999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New York Times (5\/20\/18)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u201cAmid, Amid, Amid\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Across media, coverage was eerily similar. Indeed, most media outlets even used the same word choice and structure in their headlines, declaring Maduro the winner while undermining the system\u2019s legitimacy with the helpful preposition \u201camid\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela\u2019s Maduro Re-elected Amid Outcry Over Vote\u201d (<strong>Reuters<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-venezuela-election\/venezuelas-maduro-re-elected-amid-outcry-over-vote-idUSKCN1IL05U\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela Election Won by Maduro Amid Widespread Disillusionment\u201d (<strong>New York Times<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/20\/world\/americas\/venezuela-election.html\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela Election: Maduro Wins Second Term Amid Claims of Vote Rigging\u201d (<strong>BBC<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-44187838\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela\u2019s Maduro Wins Re-election Amid Opposition Boycott\u201d (<strong>Wall Street Journal<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/venezuela-votes-as-oil-rich-nation-reels-from-economic-crisis-1526835058\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Wins Re-election Amid Charges of Irregularities\u201d (<strong>Chicago Tribune<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/nationworld\/ct-maduro-venezuela-election-20180520-story.html\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela Election: Maduro on Course for Re-election Amid Low Turnout: US Mulling Oil Sanctions After \u2018Sham Election\u2019\u201d (London <strong>Independent<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/venezuela-election-2018-nicolas-maduro-a8360771.html\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela\u2019s Maduro Wins Boycotted Elections Amid Charges of Fraud\u201d (<strong>NPR<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2018\/05\/21\/612918548\/venezuelas-maduro-wins-boycotted-elections-amid-charges-of-fraud\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVote Under Way in Venezuela Election Amid Opposition Boycott\u201d (<strong>Al Jazeera<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/05\/venezuela-election-maduro-expected-win-term-180520045442295.html\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela Keeps Voting Stations Open Amid Light Turnout\u201d (<strong>Washington Post<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/maduro-favored-as-venezuelans-vote-amid-crisis\/2018\/05\/20\/b5131264-5be4-11e8-9889-07bcc1327f4b_story.html?utm_term=.3834ceb76229\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVenezuela\u2019s Socialist Leader Nicolas Maduro Elected Amid Allegations of Irregularities\u201d (<strong>Huffington Post<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/venezuela-elections-nicolas-maduro-wins_us_5b024c69e4b0463cdba3b9c0\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112000\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/WSJ-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112000\" class=\"wp-image-112000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/WSJ-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/WSJ-Maduro-Amid-venezuela.png 575w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/WSJ-Maduro-Amid-venezuela-294x300.png 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-112000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wall Street Journal (5\/21\/18)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>None of these articles mentioned Correa, Zapatero or any other official observers\u2019 comments. Not that they were hard to find; Correa has over 3.4 million followers on <strong>Twitter<\/strong> and his comment was re-tweeted over 3,500 times at the time of writing. Instead, they unanimously presented as a farce the election system the European Parliament (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/intcoop\/election_observation\/missions\/2004-2009\/20051204_venezuela_parliamentary.pdf\" >12\/15\/05<\/a>) called \u201cin line with the most advanced international practice,\u201d the EU (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeas.europa.eu\/topics\/election-observation-missions-eueoms_en\/26227\/EU%20election%20observation%20mission%20to%20Venezuela%20in%202006\" >12\/4\/06<\/a>) called \u201cefficient, secure and auditable, and the competence of the technical experts is in line with its advanced technological level,\u201d and Jimmy Carter (9\/21\/12) called \u201cthe best in the world\u2026a very wonderful voting system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite an opposition boycott making the result predictable, Maduro received the vote of 28 percent of the eligible electorate, around the same as Barack Obama received in 2008 and more than he got in 2012, or Trump in 2016, despite these being hotly contested elections. Ignoring this, <strong>Reuters<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-venezuela-election-irregularities\/poor-venezuelans-crowd-pro-maduro-stations-in-hope-of-vote-prize-idUSKCN1IL0TA\" >5\/20\/18<\/a>) claimed poor Venezuelans were voting for Maduro because they believed they were going to \u201cwin a prize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The extraordinary similarity and negative tone across Western media should not surprise anyone. As I detailed in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bad-News-Venezuela-misreporting-Communication\/dp\/1138489239\/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1524768350&amp;sr=8-6&amp;keywords=alan+macleod\" ><em>Bad News From Venezuela<\/em><\/a><em>:<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Bad-News-from-Venezuela-Twenty-years-of-fake-news-and-misreporting\/Macleod\/p\/book\/9781138489233\" > <em>Twenty Years of Fake News and Misreporting<\/em><\/a>, there have been enormous cuts to foreign reporting, leading to a situation where only a tiny cadre of journalists create the news we hear from other countries. Media copy and paste from news organizations like <strong>Reuters<\/strong> and <strong>Associated Press<\/strong>, which themselves employ many cheaper local journalists.<\/p>\n<p>In Venezuela, these journalists are not neutral actors, but come from the highly partisan local media, affiliated with the opposition, leading to a situation where Western newsrooms see themselves as an ideological spearhead against Maduro, \u201cthe resistance\u201d to the government.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112001\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bloomberg-Maduro-venezuela.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112001\" class=\"wp-image-112001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bloomberg-Maduro-venezuela.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bloomberg-Maduro-venezuela.png 572w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Bloomberg-Maduro-venezuela-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-112001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bloomberg (5\/20\/18) managed to reserve \u201camid\u201d for the subhead.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In their crusade against Maduro, they are not above publishing fake news or deliberately misleading content, such as the infamous \u201ccondoms costs $755 in Venezuela,\u201d which was picked up across the world \u00a0(<strong>Time, <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3696663\/condoms-venezuela\/\" >2\/5\/15<\/a>; <strong>CNN<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/02\/05\/americas\/venezuela-expensive-condoms-shortage\/index.html\" >2\/6\/15<\/a>; <strong>Newsweek<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/packs-condoms-venezuela-now-cost-755-304668\" >2\/5\/15<\/a>). The originator of this story was unrepentant, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/socialism\/comments\/8kbzir\/ive_just_written_a_book_about_the_media_and\/\" >claiming<\/a> he would continue to use \u201csexy tricks\u201d to get his point across.<\/p>\n<p>The typical tricks used to discredit the Venezuelan are less sexy\u2014such as <strong>Bloomberg<\/strong>\u2019s Andrew Rosati (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-05-21\/maduro-wins-venezuelan-election-risking-harsh-oil-sanctions\" >5\/21\/18<\/a>) declaring that victory in the \u201cwidely derided election\u201d gives Maduro \u201csole ownership of the nation\u2019s crushing economic crisis\u201d\u2014then in the very next sentence gloating that \u201cUS and regional leaders\u201d will punish Venezuela for holding the vote by imposing \u201cfurther isolation and sanctions on the crisis-stricken nation\u2019s all-important oil industry.\u201d You have only yourself to blame, apparently, for defying the will of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>_________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Alan MacLeod (@AlanRMacLeod) is a member of the Glasgow University Media Group.
