With more than 68 million people worldwide displaced due to conflict or persecution \u2014 roughly equivalent to the population of Thailand\u2014 the head of the United Nations has called for unity and solidarity as a first step to support them.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

20 Jun 2018 – <\/em>The appeal by Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a> comes in a video message for World Refugee Day<\/a>, observed this Wednesday, 20 June.<\/p>\n

In it, he reported that a person was displaced every two seconds during 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn World Refugee Day, we must all think about what more we can we do to help.\u201d \u00a0The answer, he added, \u201cbegins with unity and solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Guterres also expressed deep concern over the rise in the number of refugees who are not receiving the protection they are entitled to. He added that communities, or countries, that provide a safe haven for those fleeing war or persecution\u00a0should be supported.<\/p>\n

Later this year, a Global Compact on Refugees<\/a> will be presented to the international community meeting at UN Headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n

Mr. Guterres said it offers \u201ca way forward\u201d while also recognizing the contributions that refugees make to the societies hosting them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as there are wars and persecution, there will be refugees. On World Refugee Day, I ask you to remember them,\u201d his message continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir story is one of resilience, perseverance and courage.\u00a0 Ours must be of solidarity, compassion and action.\u201d<\/p>\n
