12 Jul 2018 – <\/em>In Argentina, political parties, social organizations, human rights groups, workers\u2019 unions and Mapuches held a caravan to protest the installation of a United States \u201chumanitarian\u201d base in western city of Neuquen.<\/p>\n

Under the banner \u201cno to the yankee base in Neuquen\u201d representatives of over 60 organizations travelled Tuesday to the site where the base will be built.\u00a0They demand that\u00a0the national and provincial government\u00a0stop the construction of what they call a \u201cmilitary base\u201d and uphold territorial sovereignty.<\/p>\n

The base, under the name \u201cEmergency Operating Committee\u201d was announced by government officials as a new office for \u201cCivil Defense.\u201d Construction is financed by the U.S. Southern Command and it will function near the city, \u201cnext to all the oil resources,\u201d councilman Francisco Baggio said.<\/p>\n

The structure will have an evacuation center for possible catastrophes, and medical care center. However, the people who oppose construction claim the base is a response to the \u201cnuisance workers and the people can\u00a0demand\u00a0the recuperation of gas and oil.\u201d<\/p>\n

The document signed by the 60 organizations affirms that\u00a0\u201cthe base is presented as humanitarian aid (to avoid) being called a military base, which would require approval of Argentina\u2019s Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the case they wanted to protect us from catastrophes it would be logical for the base not to be installed in the Neuquen area, which is not a zone of volcanic eruptions or earthquakes,\u201d the document contents.<\/p>\n

Mapuche leader Jorge Nahual said \u201cwe must be mobilized. We are going through critical moments but what\u2019s coming is worse. This policy of inhumane capitalist plunder now has all the favor and the support of the government.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe base comes to fulfill a strategic intelligence objective of the U.S. military that seeks to protect their corporate interests. The Patagonia is an inexhaustible source of resources and the companies that exploit those resources are from the U.S. That\u2019s what they are here to protect,\u201d\u00a0Nahual added.<\/p>\n
