{"id":115112,"date":"2018-07-23T12:00:57","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T11:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=115112"},"modified":"2018-07-23T10:11:39","modified_gmt":"2018-07-23T09:11:39","slug":"physicians-for-human-rights-call-for-crimes-against-humanity-investigation-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/07\/physicians-for-human-rights-call-for-crimes-against-humanity-investigation-in-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Physicians for Human Rights Call for Crimes against Humanity Investigation in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_115113\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rohingya-burma-myanmar.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115113\" class=\"wp-image-115113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rohingya-burma-myanmar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rohingya-burma-myanmar.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE &#8211; A 7-year-old Rohingya refugee, Mohammas Sohel, shows a bullet wound on his chest at the Kutupalong refugee camp near Cox&#8217;s Bazar, Bangladesh, Dec. 19, 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>21 Jul 2018 &#8211; <\/em>A physicians group working with Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh says medical and scientific evidence indicates the extent of the violence they suffered at the hands of the Myanmar military and civilians.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cPlease Tell the World What They Have Done to Us,\u201d Physicians for Human Rights detailed the findings of forensic medical evaluations of 22 Rohingya survivors of an August 2017 assault on the village of Chut Pyin in Myanmar\u2019s northern Rakhine state.<\/p>\n<p>PHR said that \u201cChut Pyin is a prime example of a brutal campaign of violence carried out by Myanmar authorities against the Rohingya people, and that what happened in Chut Pyin, and elsewhere in Rakhine state, should be investigated as crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleeing Rohingya have given harrowing accounts of the military burning their villages in northern Rakhine state, and using rapes, killings, looting and the laying of land mines to prevent them from returning to their homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw multiple gunshot wounds that are consistent with people having been shot while fleeing and heard numerous accounts of rape and other sexual violence,\u201d said Dr. Homer Venters, PHR\u2019s director of programs. \u201cWe rigorously and meticulously analyzed the injuries, first-hand testimonies, and eyewitness accounts and all our forensic examinations were highly consistent with the events that the survivors described.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen of the 22 Chut Pyin survivors seen by PHR had at least one gunshot wound and the mobility of nine of the survivors was severely compromised.<\/p>\n<p>The survivors suffered various injuries, including gunshot wounds, blunt-force trauma, lacerations and more. The injuries \u201cserve as medical evidence to corroborate the survivors\u2019 accounts of shootings, beatings, stabbings, and other forms of violence which occurred on that day,\u201d PHR said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe power of science, of medicine, is that injuries do not lie,\u201d Venters said. \u201cEach laceration, blunt-force trauma, burn and gunshot wound tells a story, and we use this forensic medical evidence to shed light on what likely happened on that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar\u2019s northern Rakhine state since August 2017, after attacks by Rohingya militants against state security forces led to military reprisals.
