{"id":119596,"date":"2018-10-08T12:00:27","date_gmt":"2018-10-08T11:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=119596"},"modified":"2018-10-02T13:54:14","modified_gmt":"2018-10-02T12:54:14","slug":"alexander-yakovlev","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/10\/alexander-yakovlev\/","title":{"rendered":"Alexander Yakovlev"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1958, Alexander Yakovlev was among the first thirty Soviet students who received a Fulbright scholarship to study a year in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, he became Gorbachev&#8217;s key adviser for perestroika, glasnost and democratization.<\/p>\n<p>That scholarship probably contributed more to ending the Cold War than billions the United States spent for weapons, which only aggravated tensions.<\/p>\n<p>________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dieter-Dietrich-Fischer.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-65535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Dieter-Dietrich-Fischer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/em><em>Dietrich Fischer (1941-2015) from M\u00fcnsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. 1986-88 he was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University. He has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities and been a consultant to the United Nations.
