The crowds, their heretic sweat,
\nThe still heat of the cloistered dusk,
\nWall after wall –
\nBelieve me, I was less than whole –
\nWhatever art engulfed, desecrated, purged, destroyed,
\nThe pictures, colours, lines,
\nThe rough curving flesh of bronze:
\nIt was a battering<\/p>\n

Thank god there was a courtyard
\nTo prepare for a meandering escape<\/p>\n

And then you caught my eye,
\nYou, about whom I know,
\nI nothing knew except you gave me pause
\nWhen all was flight<\/p>\n

I recognised the faltering:
\nThat endlessly relentless hard imposing hand had lapsed<\/p>\n

And it was also you I saw the day before,
\nIt had to be,
\nAlone, resplendently at ease with such a blinding selfless beauty:
\nYou who heedless consecrated my ablutions in the sea<\/p>\n

When I emerged there was an old man at your side,
\nI slowly journeyed back, briny, curious, enthralled,
\nAnd slower still imagining as you conversed<\/p>\n

But now, confused and tired,
\nFighting swarms,
\nLost within the coils and treasures
\nOn the dreary trafficked ancient streets,
\nAmidst evaporating stillborn loves,
\nYou came to me<\/p>\n

And I so dearly wished my art –
\nHow I aspired! –
\nTo find its strength in drawing back<\/p>\n
