{"id":123338,"date":"2018-12-03T12:01:08","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T12:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=123338"},"modified":"2018-12-10T10:58:44","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T10:58:44","slug":"academic-withdraws-from-china-backed-event-for-uyghurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2018\/12\/academic-withdraws-from-china-backed-event-for-uyghurs\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Withdraws from China-Backed Event for Uyghurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>Maung Zarni says he will boycott Beijing-sponsored events until the country reverses its &#8216;troubling path.&#8217;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_123339\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/maung-zarni.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123339\" class=\"wp-image-123339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/maung-zarni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/maung-zarni.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/maung-zarni-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/maung-zarni-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-123339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maung Zarni<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>1 Dec 2018 &#8211; <\/em>A human rights activist and intellectual said he withdrew from a Beijing-sponsored forum in London to protest the detention of a million Uyghurs in China\u2019s Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a human rights activist, a Buddhist educator and a politically engaged scholar of genocide, racism and violence, I cannot, in clear conscience, participate in the three-day forum which is officially endorsed by the Government of China,\u201d wrote Maung Zarni in his withdrawal letter on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Zarni was scheduled to deliver a speech on his country Myanmar\u2019s genocide on Dec. 7 at the 5th Global China Dialogue on Governance for Global Justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[\u2026] the ruling Communist Party of China today stands credibly accused of commissioning a systematic and racially motivated persecution of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang Province,\u201d he went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling an event, he attended in Geneva in September, Zarni said a Muslim Uyghur man delivered a speech which said his mother had died two weeks ago in one of the concentration camps and the man had not seen his mother for the last 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was moved by this Uyghur exile \u2013 born and raised in what he and his fellow people call East Turkistan vis-\u00e0-vis China\u2019s official name for his homeland, Xinjiang,\u201d he said, sympathizing with the man as he also saw his mother for very brief times in the last 30 years before her death in February, \u201cas a Burmese exile from military-controlled Burma, or Myanmar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also said he saw at the same event some evidence of \u201ca vast complex of concentration camps\u201d \u2013 as a German investigative journalist put it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw photographic evidence of one complex encircled by a tall concrete wall, with watch towers, CCTV surveillance cameras and machine-gun-holding guards,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Zarni recalled a statement of Gay McDougall, a member of the UN Committee, saying she was concerned about a UN report, which said China had &#8220;turned the Uighur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internment camp&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on \u201cChina\u2019s intellectuals and China-friendly global academics\u201d to work towards reversing the \u201cdeeply troubling path\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil then I have decided to boycott any public or private educational or cultural event that is officially backed by the Government of China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Xinjiang region is home to around 10 million Uyghurs. The Turkic Muslims have long accused China\u2019s authorities of cultural, religious and economic discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>China stepped up its restrictions on the region in the past two years, banning men from growing beards and women from wearing veils, and introducing what many experts regard as the world\u2019s most extensive electronic surveillance program, according to the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 1 million people, or about 7 percent of the Muslim population in China\u2019s Xinjiang region, have now been incarcerated in an expanding network of \u201cpolitical re-education\u201d camps, according to U.S. officials and United Nations experts.<\/p>\n<p><em>___________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A Buddhist humanist from Burma, Maung Zarni is <\/em><em>a member of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment<\/a><em>, <\/em><em>former Visiting Lecturer with Harvard Medical School, specializing in racism and violence in Burma and Sri Lanka, and Non-resident Scholar in Genocide Studies with Documentation Center \u2013 Cambodia.\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Zarni is coordinator for Strategic Affairs for Free Rohingya Coalition and an adviser to the European Centre for the Study of Extremism, Cambridge, UK.<\/em><\/strong><em> His analyses have appeared in leading newspapers including the <\/em>New York Times, The Guardian <em>and<\/em> the Times<em>.
