{"id":12557,"date":"2011-05-30T12:00:24","date_gmt":"2011-05-30T11:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=12557"},"modified":"2011-05-29T13:06:50","modified_gmt":"2011-05-29T12:06:50","slug":"us-military-contractor-attacked-by-hackers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2011\/05\/us-military-contractor-attacked-by-hackers\/","title":{"rendered":"US Military Contractor Attacked by Hackers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Lockheed Martin describes cyber attack on its systems as &#8220;significant and tenacious&#8221; but says it was thwarted.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lockheed Martin Corporation,\u00a0the world&#8217;s largest military contractor,\u00a0has been attacked\u00a0by hackers in what officials say is &#8220;significant and tenacious&#8221; cyber attack.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0world&#8217;s biggest aerospace company and\u00a0US government&#8217;s top information technology provider said\u00a0on Saturday [28 May 2011] it\u00a0thwarted the cyber attack but refused to give further details.<\/p>\n<p>The US government\u00a0is said\u00a0to be working in tandem with\u00a0Lockheed Martin, based in Maryland,\u00a0to ease fears of vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>The company,\u00a0which also\u00a0produces missiles, said\u00a0no customer, programme employee personal data was compromised due to &#8220;almost immediate&#8221; protective action taken after the attack was detected on\u00a0May 21.<\/p>\n<p>The US defence department said in statement late on\u00a0Saturday night that it was working with Lockheed Martin\u00a0to determine the scope of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The incident&#8217;s impact on the department is &#8220;minimal and we don&#8217;t expect any adverse effect,&#8221; Air Force Lieutenant-Colonel April Cunningham said by email.<\/p>\n<p>But both the US government and Lockheed Martin refused to comment on details of the attack, including where it could have originated.<\/p>\n<p>Several cybersecurity experts with extensive government dealings said they were in the dark about the origin of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>But some said that the attack shows the level of vulnerability of US security forces in the context of digital content.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it tells us that DHS [the US Department of Homeland Security] doesn&#8217;t know much about what&#8217;s going on,&#8221; said Anup Ghosh, a former senior scientist at the Pentagon&#8217;s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency who worked on securing military networks.<\/p>\n<p>Ghosh, who now runs a software security company, said there had been a string of intrusions against defence contractors, security companies and US government labs since the start of 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, hackers were reported to have accessed computers holding data on Lockheed&#8217;s projected $380bn-plus F-35 fighter programme, the Pentagon&#8217;s most expensive arms purchase.<\/p>\n<p>William Lynn, deputy US secretary of defence,\u00a0wrote in the journal Foreign Affairs last fall that more than 100 foreign intelligence organisations are trying to break into US networks.<\/p>\n<p>Some already have the capacity to disrupt US information infrastructure, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Lockheed Martin produces F-16, F-22 and F-35 fighter jets as well as warships and other multibillion-dollar arms systems sold worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>In it&#8217;s Saturday statement, the company said its sales from 2010 from &#8220;continuing operations were $45.8bn&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Lockheed Martin has been the target of anti-war protests for decades for manufacturing widely used weapons and war planes.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/americas\/2011\/05\/201152965727411604.html\" > <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/americas\/2011\/05\/201152965727411604.html\" >Go to Original \u2013 aljazeera.net<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lockheed Martin Corporation, the world&#8217;s largest military contractor, has been attacked by hackers in what officials say is &#8220;significant and tenacious&#8221; cyber attack.
