Trump\u2019s claim was widely condemned in corporate media, demonstrating the commentariat\u2019s shared belief in American benevolence toward other peoples, in Washington\u2019s alleged right and duty to decide other countries\u2019 fates, and in the forever war the US supposedly has to wage in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ISIS, Iran and Russia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One consistent theme in the coverage was the view that US troops need to stay in Syria because ISIS still exists. Another is that US forces must remain there because the governments of Russia, Syria and Iran want the US to leave.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125884\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-640x668.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125884\" class=\"wp-image-125884\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-640x668.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-640x668.png 640w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-640x668-287x300.png 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The New York Times (12\/19\/18) regrets that Donald Trump isn\u2019t listening more to John Bolton.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A<strong> New York Times <\/strong>editorial (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/19\/opinion\/editorials\/trump-syria-withdrawal.html\" >12\/19\/18<\/a>) said it would be \u201cdangerous\u201d for the US to withdraw from Syria. \u201cNo one wants American troops deployed in a war zone longer than necessary,\u201d the editors claimed. The paper endorsed the perspective that \u201cthe job\u201d of fighting ISIS \u201cis not yet done,\u201d going on to write that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>an American withdrawal would also be a gift to Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader\u2026. Another beneficiary is Iran, which has also expanded its regional footprint.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to this view, the US should get out of Syria once a US presence there is no longer \u201cnecessary,\u201d but it\u2019s \u201cnecessary\u201d until some unspecified benchmark for annihilating ISIS has been reached, and never mind the costs to Syria: A US-led bombing ostensibly aimed at ISIS leveled Raqqa, a major Syrian city,\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2018\/06\/syria-raqqa-in-ruins-and-civilians-devastated-after-us-led-war-of-annihilation\/\" >killing and injuring civilians en masse<\/a> in what former Defense Secretary James Mattis called a \u201cwar of annihilation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also apparently \u201cnecessary\u201d to stay until Syria has a government that is not allied with Russia or Iran, even though in practice this pursuit has contradicted the goal the editors just outlined, eliminating ISIS: US efforts to help bring down the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad, as well as the US invasion of Iraq, helped <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2016\/03\/isis-united-states-iraq-syria\" >create the conditions<\/a> for the emergence of ISIS in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>What the authors are suggesting is that the US should maintain an illegal presence in Syria until the Syrian government has been overthrown and replaced with one that has partnerships to which the US assents. Because all evidence suggests that Russia will fight to keep its Syrian partner in power, in practical terms the authors are arguing that it\u2019s \u201cnecessary\u201d for the US to occupy Syria forever, or until the US fights World War III with Russia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125885\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-Leonhardt-640x721.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125885\" class=\"wp-image-125885\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-Leonhardt-640x721.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-Leonhardt-640x721.png 640w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/NYT-Trump-Syria-Leonhardt-640x721-266x300.png 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125885\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Leonhardt (New York Times, 12\/20\/18) frames a withdrawal of US troops from Syria as a \u201cgift\u201d to Vladimir Putin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In an article headlined \u201cRetreat Rhymes With Defeat,\u201d the <strong>Times<\/strong>\u2019 David Leonhardt (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/20\/opinion\/trump-syria-withdrawal-isis.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fopinion&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=opinion&amp;region=stream&amp;module=stream_unit&amp;version=search&amp;contentPlacement=21&amp;pgtype=sectionfront\" >12\/20\/18<\/a>) argued that the US needs to stay in Syria because Islamic State fighters are reportedly still in the country, and echoed the view that a US pullout of Syria would be \u201c\u2018the greatest gift\u2019 that Trump has so far given to Russia\u201d\u2014a reference to the conspiracy theory that Trump is a Russian tool\u2014because a US drawdown would benefit the Russian-allied Syrian government. Like <strong>Times<\/strong> editors, Leonhardt argued the US should stay in Syria not only until there are no ISIS fighters left in the country, but also until the Syrian government is replaced with one that is not partnered with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>But, again, US efforts to broker regime change in Syria were a cause of ISIS becoming a powerful force in the country: The UK-based Conflict Armament Research <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/how-isis-got-weapons-us-used-them-take-iraq-syria-748468\" >found<\/a> that the US had been supplying arms to insurgents opposed to the Assad government since at least 2012, and when ISIS began rapidly seizing territory in 2013 and 2014, many US-armed rebel groups were either defeated by the incoming militants or joined them. As ISIS took nearly half of Syria, the US continued to train and equip Syrian rebels, using allies like Jordan and Turkey as intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a <strong>Washington Post<\/strong> editorial (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/this-is-not-the-way-to-leave-syria\/2018\/12\/19\/9227cd7a-03ab-11e9-b5df-5d3874f1ac36_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.c2ebcf68e8aa\" >12\/19\/18<\/a>) headlined \u201cThis Is Not the Way to Leave Syria\u201d complained that \u201cthe Syria withdrawal hands Tehran and its ally Russia a windfall.\u201d This suggests that the editors believe \u201cthe way to leave Syria\u201d is with a new government approved by the US in place, or at least with the current one ousted\u2014a gambit that the US last pulled off in Libya, a country that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5042560\/libya-slave-trade\/\" >now has slavery<\/a>, with some slaves <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/enslaved-immigrants-sold-their-kidneys-liver-libyas-burgeoning-organ-trafficking-market-1650024\" >reportedly<\/a> having their organs harvested and sold.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Post<\/strong>\u2019s Max Boot (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/trumps-surprise-syria-pullout-is-a-giant-christmas-gift-to-our-enemies\/2018\/12\/19\/c032c7e4-03ae-11e9-b6a9-0aa5c2fcc9e4_story.html?utm_term=.cf47798fbc84\" >12\/19\/18<\/a>) claimed that Trump\u2019s supposed plan to get US troops out of Syria amounted to \u201chanding a Christmas present to the mullahs\u201d\u2014\u201cthe mullahs\u201d being a lazy, orientalist shorthand for the Iranian government used by people who know little about the country. The author has so internalized imperialist ideology that he thinks the US has a right to indefinitely control <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2018\/world\/syria\/us-troops-in-syria\/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.7d85497e0077\" >one-third of Syria<\/a>, including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joshualandis.com\/blog\/us-policy-toward-the-levant-kurds-and-turkey-by-joshua-landis\/\" >half of its energy resources and much of its best agricultural land<\/a>, because it could benefit Iran if the US did not do that.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125886\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/WaPo-Trump-Syria-Boot-640x649.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125886\" class=\"wp-image-125886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/WaPo-Trump-Syria-Boot-640x649.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/WaPo-Trump-Syria-Boot-640x649.png 640w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/WaPo-Trump-Syria-Boot-640x649-296x300.png 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Boot (Washington Post, 12\/19\/18) complains that \u201cwhen presidents normally \u2018wag the dog,\u2019 they start a war.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Israel &amp; the Kurds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Much of the coverage complained that the US pulling out of Syria would be bad for Israel, in that Iran will likely retain influence in Syria. \u201cThe American withdrawal worries Israel,\u201d said the <strong>Times<\/strong>\u2019 editorial. Trump \u201cpromised to protect Israel, but that nation will now be left to face alone the buildup by Iran and its proxies along its northern border,\u201d the <strong>Post<\/strong>\u2019s howled. \u201cSo much for Trump\u2019s conceit that he is the most pro-Israel president ever,\u201d Boot moaned, going on to write that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A US withdrawal from Syria will entrench the Islamic Republic of Iran on Israel\u2019s doorstep. That damage vastly outweighs the empty symbolism of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/13\/world\/middleeast\/israel-jerusalem-us-embassy.html\" >moving the US embassy<\/a> to Jerusalem.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whatever these pundits\u2019 delusions, the Israeli state is not some kind of vulnerable minority that needs to be protected from violence; it is a nuclear-armed perpetrator of extraordinary violence\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2018\/05\/great-return-march-nakba-palestine-resistance\" >against the Palestinians<\/a>, of course, and also against states in the region, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fair.org\/home\/painting-an-israeli-attack-on-syria-as-israeli-retaliation\/\" >including Syria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>US media say they are concerned that Turkey will attack the Syrian Kurds, and that the US should stay in Syria to protect them. The <strong>Times<\/strong> wrote that \u201cAmong the biggest losers\u201d of an American pullout<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>are likely to be the Kurdish troops that the United States has equipped and relied on to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Turkey\u2019s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, considers many of the Kurds to be terrorists bent on destroying his country.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the <strong>Post<\/strong>, \u201cThe Syrian Kurdish forces . . . will be perhaps the foremost victims of Mr. Trump\u2019s decision. Betrayed by Washington, they will now be subject to a military offensive by Turkey.\u201d Boot said that \u201cAmerica\u2019s Kurdish and Arab allies in the Syrian Democratic Forces will be hard-put to resist [ISIS] on their own, much less deal with the Turkish threat against the Kurds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is true that Turkey poses a threat to Kurdish people, and the risks facing Kurds merit concern, but the analysts mislead readers by suggesting a US occupation of Syria is the answer. The US military\u2019s function is not to protect civilians\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2015\/11\/veterans-day-american-military-iraq-war-libya-vietnam\" >just the opposite<\/a>, in fact. And a US presence in Syria has not kept the Kurds safe from Turkey: Turkey, along with armed groups opposed to the Syrian government that the US <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cia-vetted-syrian-rebels-fighting-assad-2015-10?IR=T\" >supported<\/a>, ransacked Afrin, a Kurdish-majority territory in northern Syria, plundering the area and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-43457214\" >driving out 220,000 civilians<\/a>. Moreover, throughout the 1990s, the US <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=9E2qy-VGjjwC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;vq=kurd&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0\" >directly participated in<\/a> Turkey\u2019s mass killing and oppression of Kurds in Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of the Syrian Kurds making alliances with local forces that could result in protecting them from Turkey, as the Kurds <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/dec\/28\/syrian-kurdish-militia-manbij-turkey\" >appear to have done<\/a> with the Syrian government, is a part of the story these pundits don\u2019t think their readers need to hear about. None of these commentators who are professing concern for the welfare of Kurdish people consider the possibility that the only long-term way to ensure the safety and prosperity of the Kurds, and every other ethnic and confessional group in West Asia, might be a comprehensive, region-wide solution that necessarily entails upending the US-dominated order, replacing it with local self-rule. At no point do any of these articles consider the radical notion that the US has no right to determine Syria\u2019s affairs, or those of any other country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125887\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CNN-Trump-Syria-640x576.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125887\" class=\"wp-image-125887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CNN-Trump-Syria-640x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CNN-Trump-Syria-640x576.png 640w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/CNN-Trump-Syria-640x576-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-125887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fool me once, shame on you; fool me 900 times\u2026you should be seriously concerned about me, to be honest. (CNN, 3\/29\/18)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Fear Not, Pundit Class<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is ample reason to doubt that Trump will actually withdraw from Syria entirely. Trump said he would remove the troops in March 2018 (<strong>CNN<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/29\/politics\/trump-withdraw-syria-pentagon\/index.html\" >3\/29\/18<\/a>) and didn\u2019t follow through, and the administration is again sending mixed signals. National Security Advisor John Bolton <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/syria-us-john-bolton-trip-to-israel-1.4968207\" >said<\/a> that American forces will \u201celiminate what remains of ISIS before leaving,\u201d \u201cthere is no fixed timetable for completing the drawdown,\u201d and \u201csome 200 US troops will remain in the vicinity of al-Tanf, in southern Syria, to counter growing Iranian activity in the region.\u201d More recently, the military said that it moving ahead with plans to withdraw all troops, with one Pentagon official <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-military-prepares-for-syria-pullout-amid-uncertainty-11547156824\" >saying<\/a>, \u201cWe don\u2019t take orders from Bolton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Mike Pompeo <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jan\/10\/us-expel-every-last-iranian-boot-syria-mike-pompeo\" >said<\/a> the \u201cUS will expel every last Iranian boot from Syria.\u201d Trump himself won\u2019t commit to a date for removing the troops, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/middle-east-news\/iran\/iran-can-do-what-they-want-in-syria-trump-says-1.6805949\" >saying<\/a> only that this will supposedly happen \u201cover a period of time.\u201d Subsequently, a spokesperson for the US-led coalition against ISIS said it has begun leaving, though it \u201cwill not discuss specific timelines,\u201d and <strong>Reuters<\/strong> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mideast-crisis-syria-coalition\/us-led-coalition-says-it-has-started-syria-withdrawal-idUSKCN1P50W2\" >1\/11\/19<\/a>) noted that \u201cresidents near border crossings that are typically used by US forces going in and out of Syria from Iraq said they had seen no obvious or large-scale movement of US ground forces on Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if the US were to pull its troops out of Syria, it\u2019s far from certain that this will mean the US will stop meddling. If the US holds on to its bases in Syria, continues to use Syrian air space, or fails to withdraw the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2018\/04\/pentagon-acknowledge-us-contractor-presence-syria-iraq.html\" >more than 5,500 private contractors<\/a> it has in the country, then that\u2019s not a withdrawal from Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is there reason to believe that US allies will take their hands off Syria: For example, the day after Trump\u2019s announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel would increase its efforts against Iran in Syria \u201cin a very decisive way and with support and backup from the US\u201d; on Christmas Day, Israel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/russia-slams-israel-gross-violation-syria-strikes-181226135745199.html\" >bombed Damascus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, all of the media\u2019s fretting about a possible scaling back of America\u2019s empire may well have been over nothing.<\/p>\n<p>____________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Gregory-Shupak.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-125888 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Gregory-Shupak-e1547298486733.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"123\" \/><\/a><\/em><em>Gregory Shupak teaches media studies at the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto.
