{"id":129930,"date":"2019-03-25T12:01:52","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T12:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=129930"},"modified":"2019-04-01T12:08:15","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T11:08:15","slug":"harbingers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2019\/03\/harbingers\/","title":{"rendered":"Harbingers"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>22 Mar 2019<em> &#8211; This poem was first written on June 6, 2013, revised many times, until the present version in 2019.\u00a0 It is, of course, a \u201cplay\u201d on words from \u201cWaiting for Godot,\u201d the imaginative 1953 play by Samuel Beckett, in which two characters \u2013 Vladimir and Estragon \u2013 wait for Godot.\u00a0\u00a0 The original play emerged amidst the \u201cbeat generation,\u201d in which the absurdities of the time, the sheer contradictions, were captured in ironies, cynicism, despair, and ambivalence.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I felt a need to express my feelings about current times.\u00a0 Finding in them, parallels, the same absurdities, of the past. Does it ever change?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>**********************************<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>I.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEnd your poetry volume on a positive note,\u201d she said!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot with regret, doubt, despair!<\/p>\n<p>Offer love!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis, I was told, by someone in need of love!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBut cannot love arise from regret, doubt, despair?\u201d I asked.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAre these not seeds waiting to blossom? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Are these to be ignored,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In favor of romantic pretense?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Are we to turn from grief?\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Favor illusion? <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Discard, deny, refute, avoid<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Restorative powers of pain, shame, guilt?\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>II.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNo,\u201d I protested:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will end my volume with <strong>\u201c<em>GODOT<\/em>!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Life\u2019s absurdities!<\/p>\n<p>Delusions, aberrations!<\/p>\n<p>Mirages, designed to placate,<\/p>\n<p>Images, visions, . . . whimsey!<\/p>\n<p>Anthem of an era!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Struggles recalled:<\/p>\n<p>Identity, meaning, purpose!<\/p>\n<p>Conform, submit, obey!<\/p>\n<p>Passivity, obedience, surrender!<\/p>\n<p>Choose!<\/p>\n<p>Some chose!<\/p>\n<p>Most did not!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I am a child of the Fifties and Sixties . . . \u00a0Kennedy-Era Kid!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shattered idealistic hopes!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk not what your country . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Demons waiting!<\/p>\n<p>Warren Report!<\/p>\n<p>Secrets!<\/p>\n<p>Secret State!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they knew, there would chaos . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bullets, lies, white milk!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForward: For god, country, flag!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whose god, whose country, whose flag?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mass-culture prisoners:<\/p>\n<p>Schools, media, churches, family:<\/p>\n<p>Government victims,<\/p>\n<p>Corporate gadgets,<\/p>\n<p>Church acolytes,<\/p>\n<p>Military puppets,<\/p>\n<p>Wall street drones,<\/p>\n<p>DC assassins!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We accepted rewards!<\/p>\n<p>Protest? Why?<\/p>\n<p>Bowling alleys, drive-ins, slow-dancing,<\/p>\n<p>Amusement parks, chartreuse socks,<\/p>\n<p>Ice cream, donuts, YMCA,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, what more can you ask for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beatniks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contemptuous:<\/p>\n<p>Plastic,<\/p>\n<p>Synthetic,<\/p>\n<p>Colors,<\/p>\n<p>Homogenization,<\/p>\n<p>Similarity!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Resist!<\/p>\n<p>Wear black!<\/p>\n<p>Model death!<\/p>\n<p>Lazarus?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harbingers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI honor you, too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they all lived in little boxes, . . . \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Suits, ties, tasseled-polished loafers,<\/p>\n<p>Badges flashed,<\/p>\n<p>Acronymic agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Moles, plants, informants awaiting approval!<\/p>\n<p>Promotion! Medals!<\/p>\n<p>Three-Week vacations!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obvious: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Censorship!<\/p>\n<p><em>En loco parentis!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ostracism!<\/p>\n<p>Racism, sexism, ism \u201cisms!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conform:<\/strong> College:<\/p>\n<p>Hazing, blackballs, student-courts,<\/p>\n<p>Look alike: V-necks, flannel, tan bucks!<\/p>\n<p>Fraternities, sororities, rituals!<\/p>\n<p>Fast foods, milk shakes, fries.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sex:<\/em> Yes, No, Maybe, Ok, but . . .<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWill you still love me, tomorrow. . . .\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indulge! Trust Ike!<\/p>\n<p>Racism, sexism, moralism!<\/p>\n<p>Sunday religions, contradictions, flaws.<\/p>\n<p>Forms, rules, records, surveillance,<\/p>\n<p>Agencies, institutions, parents, priests!<\/p>\n<p>Drunk with control,<\/p>\n<p>Insane with power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I applaud, too late, voices of counter-cultures! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Choices were clear:<\/p>\n<p>Ozzie &amp; Harriet, Leave It to Beaver, Donna Reed,<\/p>\n<p>White Knight! (Why no Black Knight?)<\/p>\n<p>Linoleum, Formica, plastics, air freshers!<\/p>\n<p>Inhale Camels, Lucky Strike, Micronite filters!<\/p>\n<p>Lighters! Inhale!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee the USA, in your . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cancer!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Herd comfort!<\/p>\n<p>Suburbs, separation, similarity;<\/p>\n<p>Look alike, be alike, like alike!<\/p>\n<p>Escape from freedom!<\/p>\n<p>Tell me what to do . . .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>III.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Beatniks<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Black-bearded, rumpled, unkempt!<\/p>\n<p>Shadows, resisting, mocking,<\/p>\n<p>Taunting by presence!<\/p>\n<p>Anomalies,<\/p>\n<p>Ruining perfection!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBeatniks:\u201d Greenwich Village!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Artists protesting times,<\/p>\n<p>In words, poems, drama, paintings, dress, action.<\/p>\n<p>Scornful, daring, provoking,<\/p>\n<p>Rejecting Eisenhower-era comforts,<\/p>\n<p>Seeking more from life . . .<\/p>\n<p>Than transistors . . .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uprisings!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blacks, women, youth, confused men!<\/p>\n<p>Defiant!<\/p>\n<p>Hungering for more than Betty Crocker,<\/p>\n<p>Insulting symbols, rules, regulations,<\/p>\n<p>Cherishing nothing,<\/p>\n<p>Rejecting sterility,<\/p>\n<p>Myths,<\/p>\n<p>Purity!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Generational Escape:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Protesting choices,<\/p>\n<p>Cutting puppet-master strings,<\/p>\n<p>Irreverence in each glance,<\/p>\n<p>Disdain in each step,<\/p>\n<p>Delight in condemnation.<\/p>\n<p>Beatniks:<\/p>\n<p>Very presence . . .<\/p>\n<p>Insult to society!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IV.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I did not join this protest . . . <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This counter-culture,<\/p>\n<p>This prescient <strong>harbinge<\/strong>r,<\/p>\n<p>This prophetic, artistic, intuitive impulse,<\/p>\n<p>Rejecting mass control, abuse, habits!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I ignored message . . . \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>Missed warning:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvoid comfort,<\/p>\n<p>Beware familiar,<\/p>\n<p>Accept uncertainty,<\/p>\n<p>Extremes contain opposites,<\/p>\n<p>Post-modernism coming!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Read, <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I Fled!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watching, forgetting,<\/p>\n<p>Knowing, denying,<\/p>\n<p>Yielding, lying,<\/p>\n<p>Trying . . . Complying!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I did not join them in squalid slums . . . <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Infested apartments,<\/p>\n<p>Street-corner begging,<\/p>\n<p>Black-shrouded clothing,<\/p>\n<p>Zombies,<\/p>\n<p>Walking close to walls,<\/p>\n<p>Tangled hair!<\/p>\n<p>Panhandling, garbage cans, scavenging!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I failed to carry their message: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife is art!<\/p>\n<p>Unfolding impulses,<\/p>\n<p>Yearning,<\/p>\n<p>Freedom,<\/p>\n<p>Struggle against uniformity!<\/p>\n<p>Experience!<\/p>\n<p>Create!<\/p>\n<p>Be!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beatniks knew:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTimes are father to child.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You become what you do!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful what you ask for\u00a0 . . .<\/p>\n<p>You may get it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not heed!<\/p>\n<p><em>Mea culpa! <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Forgive me father, for I have sinned . . . <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So have you! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Convention: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Covenants across wealth, power, position,<\/p>\n<p>Trapping, snaring, seducing,<\/p>\n<p>Apollonian pursuits amidst suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Bugles blowing charge . . . win!<\/p>\n<p>Football fields, baseball diamonds, basketball courts!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>War!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rice fields, paddies, hills, jungles, valleys,<\/p>\n<p>Tunnels, bars, hooches, dope,<\/p>\n<p>Suckee, fuckee . . .<\/p>\n<p>Half-breeds.<\/p>\n<p>Body counts!<\/p>\n<p>Good morning Vietnammmmmm!<\/p>\n<p>Orange rain!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Come out!<\/p>\n<p>Fight . . .\u00a0 like a man!<\/p>\n<p>B-29s<\/p>\n<p>Carpet bombing<\/p>\n<p>Napalm,<\/p>\n<p>Copters,<\/p>\n<p>M-16s<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>AK-47s,<\/p>\n<p>Traps,<\/p>\n<p>Flares,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t get no . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one gets out of here . . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relentless human toll:<\/p>\n<p>Government, corporation, nation, media ascendancy:<\/p>\n<p>Bilderburgers, Davos, Illuminati:<\/p>\n<p>Privileged people, families, roles!<\/p>\n<p>Infatuation! Uniforms! Pledges! Hymns!<\/p>\n<p>Order!<\/p>\n<p>Orders!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Amidst white sacred-marble buildings,<\/p>\n<p>Monuments,<\/p>\n<p>Engraved carvings,<\/p>\n<p>Portraits,<\/p>\n<p>Shadows,<\/p>\n<p>Secret State!<\/p>\n<p>Five-sided buildings!<\/p>\n<p>Yes Sir! No Sir!<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy arm hurts from . . . .!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Victims again!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>We chose seduction:<\/p>\n<p>Materialism, consumerism, celebrities.<\/p>\n<p>Mind intrusions,<\/p>\n<p>Dulled reason,<\/p>\n<p>Saturated senses.<\/p>\n<p>Colonization!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s good for General Bullmoose, is good for . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Violence! War! Destruction!<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t cha jest love it!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eisenhower\u2019s gnawing guilt: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must be alert to a growing Military-Industrial Complex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How inadequate!<\/p>\n<p>Complex built under his watch,<\/p>\n<p>Funded by his signatures,<\/p>\n<p>Cancerous proliferation,<\/p>\n<p>Sealing humanity\u2019s fate:<\/p>\n<p>Guns, bombs, tanks, planes,<\/p>\n<p>Corporate murderers!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Empire . . . Sucking life: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monolith!<\/p>\n<p>Nurtured by greed,<\/p>\n<p>Sustained by fear,<\/p>\n<p>Loyal to smiling faces:<\/p>\n<p>Privileged families,<\/p>\n<p>Lobbyists,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Sheriffs in town!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>USURY<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Military-Industrial-Congressional-Educational-Media Complex:<\/p>\n<p>Wealthy, powerful, positioned, anointed \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Cronyism,<\/p>\n<p>Nepotism,<\/p>\n<p>Thieves,<\/p>\n<p>Indifferent to suffering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Too late I celebrate the Dionysian song,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Anthems of generations past.<\/p>\n<p>Too late!<\/p>\n<p>Memories linger,<\/p>\n<p>Images faint!<\/p>\n<p>Well-springs for today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A toast to \u201cBeatniks,\u201d past and present:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Harbingers!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Igniting conscience,<\/p>\n<p>Folk songs,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere have all the flowers gone . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mateus wine,<\/p>\n<p>Coffee houses,<\/p>\n<p>Intimacy,<\/p>\n<p>Guitars!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rock n Roll!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I sing praises:<\/p>\n<p>Luigi Pirandello, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac, Samuel Beckett,<\/p>\n<p>Alan Ginsberg, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Eugene Ionesco . . .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Seeds planted!<\/p>\n<p>Protest!<\/p>\n<p>Some followed, some understood,<\/p>\n<p>Some seized the moment:<\/p>\n<p>Berkeley!<\/p>\n<p>Hippies followed!<\/p>\n<p>Long hair, color, drugs,<\/p>\n<p>Psychedelics!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Carpe diem!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Revolutionaries!<\/p>\n<p>New heroes!<\/p>\n<p>Angela Davis, Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm X, Che Guevara, John Lennon,<\/p>\n<p>James Morrison, James Dean,<\/p>\n<p>Rebels with a cause!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Close My Volume . . . <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not with illusions of security,<\/p>\n<p>Not with pretenses of love:<\/p>\n<p>Denying,<\/p>\n<p>Forbidding,<\/p>\n<p>Distancing,<\/p>\n<p><em>Touch!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>***********************<\/p>\n<p><strong>I close my volume with a poem to &#8212; GODOT.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Harbingers<\/em><\/strong>, is part of a volume of collected poems I wrote about my life journey. The closing poem in my volume is entitled: <strong><em>GODOT<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>GODOT <\/em><\/strong>is not an optimistic, upbeat poem, filled with hopeful visions and positive thoughts. It is a wake-up call, capturing the absurdities of our times, alerting us to creeping controls, domination: ascendance of wealth, power, position. Some rejected the allure, choosing instead to model ridicule.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote <strong><em>Harbingers <\/em><\/strong>to remind myself and others, of the 1950s and 1960s, years of our youth, there were people who warned us of the costs of silence and passivity. Sometimes, courage comes late in life. I did not want to waste another chance.
