The House voted on the resolution in early April, passing it with 247 votes to 175.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis resolution is an unnecessary, dangerous attempt to weaken my constitutional authorities, endangering the lives of American citizens and brave service members, both today and in the future,\u201d Trump wrote in explaining his veto.<\/p>\n<p>The US provides billions of dollars of arms to the Saudi-led coalition fighting against Iran-backed rebels in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/yemen\" >Yemen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But as the war drags on, members of Congress have expressed concern about the thousands of civilians killed in coalition airstrikes since the conflict began in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s veto, the second of his presidency, led to outpourings of dismay from politicians and NGOs. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, called on him to \u201cput peace before politics\u201d. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerPelosi\/status\/1118316370008182785\" >She called<\/a> the Yemen conflict a \u201chorrific humanitarian crisis that challenges the conscience of the entire world\u201d and decried Trump\u2019s decision to continue US involvement in it as a cynical move.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen3-1.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen3-1.jpg 519w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen3-1-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Senator Bernie Sanders, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, said: \u201cI am disappointed, but not surprised, that Trump has rejected the bipartisan resolution to end US involvement in the horrific war in Yemen. The people of Yemen desperately need humanitarian help, not more bombs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The California congressman Ro Khanna, a Democrat, added: \u201cFrom a president elected on the promise of putting a stop to our endless wars, this veto is a painful missed opportunity.\u201d Khanna argued the bill marked a step forward, despite the veto. \u201cIt sends a clear signal to the Saudis that they need to lift their blockade and allow humanitarian assistance into Yemen if they care about their relationship with Congress,\u201d Khanna said.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting in the Arab world\u2019s poorest country has left millions suffering from shortages of food and medical care and has pushed the country to the brink of famine.<\/p>\n<p>David Miliband, the former British foreign secretary who now heads the International Rescue Committee, denounced the veto as \u201cmorally wrong and strategically wrongheaded\u201d. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/press-release\/trumps-yemen-veto-green-light-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crisis-continue\" >In a statement<\/a> he said Yemen was at \u201cbreaking point with 10m people on the brink of famine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Oxfam America said the veto would not stop the campaign to end US support for the Saudi military action. \u201cAmerica stands with Yemen. This fight is far from over,\u201d the global humanitarian aid group said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OxfamAmerica\/status\/1118313710571925505\" >tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen-children.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-122000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen-children.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen-children.jpg 599w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/yemen-children-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many lawmakers have grown uneasy with Trump\u2019s close relationship with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/saudiarabia\" >Saudi Arabia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers criticized the president for failing to condemn the country for the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who lived in the United States and had written critically about the kingdom. Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October and never came out.
