of course he didn\u2019t write anything
\nin any way resembling a poem,
\nhis signature was barely legible,
\nhis words were few<\/p>\n

occasionally he turned a phrase
\nthat made me turn my head,
\nbut that was rare<\/p>\n

I think it was the memory of the light
\non some long ago afternoon
\nhovering between amber and grey,
\nthis strange light on the familiar creases,
\non his impassive face and its stubble:
\nI\u2019d caught him lost in music that day<\/p>\n

when the song was through
\nI watched his long and elegant fingers
\ndo nothing, rest, offer me some bread
\ncasually: we ate in silence,
\nhis eyes traveled somewhere,
\nsomewhere else<\/p>\n

only now I feel such poetry,
\nin silence, across the spaces of an epoch,
\nas I stir my coffee, contemplate my pen
\nin the fading amber glow of the coming night<\/p>\n
