Everything about this twilight zone gathering smacked of irony.<\/p>\n<p>Irony that governments which support terrorists in Syria and whitewash Israeli<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/data\/killed\/mideast\/israel-and-the-occupied-palestinian-territory\/?status=Killed&amp;motiveConfirmed%5b%5d=Confirmed&amp;type%5b%5d=Journalist&amp;cc_fips%5b%5d=IS&amp;start_year=1992&amp;end_year=2019&amp;group_by=location\" > murders <\/a>of Palestinian journalists have the gall to hold a conference feigning concern for journalists\u2019 rights and media freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Irony that journalists actually suffering persecution and unjust imprisonment \u2013like<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/interview-ukraine-kirill-vyshinsky\/255517\/\" > Kirill Vyshinsky<\/a> and Julian Assange \u2013 were not the focus of the conference, with Assange only mentioned in passing, and Vyshinsky, presumably, not at all.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/464179-press-freedom-uk-assange\/\" >Watch: \u2018Deeply hypocritical\u2019 UK govt vows to protect media freedom as Assange sits in British jail (VIDEO) <\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Irony most of all that a conference \u2014\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/campaign-campagne\/media_freedom-liberte_medias-2019\/index.aspx?lang=eng\" >according to<\/a> Global Affairs Canada, an \u201c<em>international campaign to shine a global spotlight on media freedom<\/em>&#8230;\u201d\u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EnInqsUsegs&amp;feature=youtu.be\" >refused participation of<\/a> two major and sought-out media outlets, both Russian: RT and Sputnik.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers apparently tried to claim the reason for the exclusion was simply that they\u2019d met their quota of journalists attending. But they didn\u2019t maintain the lie to Western media, RT London correspondent Polly Boiko<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EnInqsUsegs&amp;feature=youtu.be\" > noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>Behind our backs other news channels got a very different message: \u2018We have not accredited RT or Sputnik because of their active role in spreading disinformation.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Former Guardian<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/steelejourno?lang=en\" > Chief <\/a>Foreign Correspondent Jonathan Steele<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EnInqsUsegs&amp;feature=youtu.be\" > called<\/a> the exclusion of RT and Sputnik a \u201cdisgrace\u201d, also stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>I think they\u2019re trying to isolate RT and imply that it\u2019s not a genuine broadcaster in the hope that British people and others around the world who watched RT International won\u2019t continue to watch it.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The irony \u2013yet again\u2013 is that Russia isn\u2019t doing the same, isn\u2019t isolating Western media.<\/p>\n<p>Russia-based journalist Bryan MacDonald<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/27khv\/status\/1148891970607226881%20\" > tweeted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>It\u2019s like the world has turned on its head. Moscow is literally paying people to translate Western media into Russian (see<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RT_InoTV\" > @RT_InoTV<\/a>). But the UK is in a panic about Russian outlets, even running covert operations, such as \u201cIntegrity Initiative,\u201d to \u201ccombat\u201d a perceived threat<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even the Committee to Protect Journalists<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2019\/07\/uk-should-not-deny-media-access-based-on-propagand.php\" > expressed<\/a> concern at the UK\u2019s exclusion of RT and Sputnik.<\/p>\n<p>From the feedback on the UK Foreign Office<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/foreignoffice\/status\/1148864435194347520\" > tweet<\/a> featuring CNN\u2019s Christiane Amanpour about \u201c<em>reporting the truth<\/em>\u201d, it was refreshing to see that many saw this charade for what it was,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRIMark\/status\/1148945692162961408\" > calling it Orwellian<\/a>, and<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenjaminNorton\/status\/1148991217616785412\" > noting that Britain is<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>torturing journalist Julian Assange as it uses<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/camanpour\" > @CAmanpour<\/a> to produce propaganda claiming it cares about media freedom.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t help chiming in, noting Amanpour&#8217;s exploitation of a Syrian child in order to demonize Russia.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Theatre of the absurd. Truthful? Amanpour waved photo of Omran Daqneesh in face of  Lavrov &amp; essentially accused Russia of airstriking boy&#39;s home. Boy&#39;s dad told me no airstrike. It was fake news. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x9iWhGTNaI\" >https:\/\/t.co\/x9iWhGTNaI<\/a><br \/>Did Amanpour bother apologizing for her propaganda? Nope. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CBR1Yd4u55\" >https:\/\/t.co\/CBR1Yd4u55<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Eva Karene Bartlett (@EvaKBartlett) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EvaKBartlett\/status\/1149322583688523778?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >July 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The UK conference isn\u2019t the first example of an international event hosting regime-change media while excluding critical media.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, when<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/yvesengler.com\/tag\/lima-group\/\" > the Lima Group<\/a> was meeting in Canada to discuss the self-proclaimed non-president, Juan Guaido, Canada<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/telesurenglish\/status\/1092120092916281346\" > likewise denied<\/a> accreditation to Telesur and Russian media.<\/p>\n<p>Global Affairs Canada<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/venezuela-russia-canada-media-lima-group-1.5134625\" > alleged<\/a> at the time there would be<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>reciprocal action against Canadian media in Russia.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Bryan MacDonald told me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>Any that wish can operate in Russia. There are no restrictions<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, a perusal of the Twitter accounts of<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBCChrisBrown\/status\/1145684896960135168\" > CBC<\/a> and<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CGalipeauTJ\/status\/1141520320701988864\" > Radio Canada<\/a> journalists shows they\u2019ve continued reporting from Russia months since Canada\u2019s allegation of reciprocal action.<\/p>\n<p>Which outlets did Canada give access to during the Lima meeting?
