{"id":138111,"date":"2019-07-29T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T11:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=138111"},"modified":"2019-07-20T09:36:19","modified_gmt":"2019-07-20T08:36:19","slug":"the-chomsky-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2019\/07\/the-chomsky-poem\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chomsky Poem"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>On the Occasion of Noam Chomsky Receiving the Peace Abbey Foundation Courage of Conscience Award&#8211;9 Dec 2016<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Philosopher, author, teacher, linguist, activist,<br \/>\nNoam Chomsky rings the bell of truth<br \/>\nfor those who seek to go beyond the veil drawn<br \/>\nby the corporate, political and military captains<br \/>\nwho prevent the dawn of understanding<br \/>\nin those they seek to rule.<br \/>\nWe who read, and listen closely, to Chomsky\u2019s words<br \/>\nare refreshed by the nectar of his wisdom,<br \/>\nhis common sense, his courage of conscience,<br \/>\nand his persistent call for equality for all<br \/>\nin a brave new world lit by a passion for compassion;<br \/>\nwhere the military-industrial beast is tamed, tethered<br \/>\nand replaced by commitment to planetary peace.<\/p>\n<p>From Little Rock to Standing Rock;<br \/>\nfrom Vietnam to the hydrogen bomb;<br \/>\nfrom the lies that launched the Iraq attack,<br \/>\nto the Baltimore slaying of those who are black \u2026<br \/>\nChomsky\u2019s critique of the power elite<br \/>\nhelps us see the paradox of living<br \/>\nin a country supposedly free,<br \/>\nwhere educate means ignorate<br \/>\nstudents into stupefied confusion,<br \/>\nso they later vote for more chains of illusion,<br \/>\nwhile the media cheers the slaughter of innocents<br \/>\nand politicians pretend to preserve our innocence.<br \/>\nIn support of Palestinian rights and the Sandinista revolution,<br \/>\nChomsky points the way to enlightened evolution.<\/p>\n<p>Dark times indeed, though, and darker ahead;<br \/>\nso many children unnecessarily dead.\u00a0 What can we say?<br \/>\nWhat can we do?\u00a0 Only this:\u00a0 Follow through with courage,<br \/>\nconscience and kindly deeds, keeping faith and planting seeds<br \/>\nfor a better tomorrow; showing that love heals the sorrow<br \/>\nand leads to the light of Chomsky\u2019s message, so lucid and bright:<br \/>\nTake a stance, do the dance, and give peace a chance.<br \/>\n__________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stefan-schindler.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-137963 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Stefan-schindler-e1563611575201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><em>Stefan Schindler taught philosophy, psychology, education, and religion for 40 years at institutions of higher learning, including The University of Pennsylvania, La Salle University, Berkley College of Music, The Boston Conservatory of Music, Dance and Theater, and the Boston and Brookline Centers for Adult Education.\u00a0 Co-founder of The National Registry for Conscientious Objection, a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, a recipient of The Boston Baha\u2019i Peace Award, and a Trustee of The Life Experience School and Peace Abbey, Dr. Schindler received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Boston College (on Freud, Sartre, Hegel, and Jung).
