{"id":141281,"date":"2019-08-26T12:01:47","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T11:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=141281"},"modified":"2019-09-02T15:54:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T14:54:53","slug":"unsettling-truths-about-the-1959-u-s-statehood-vote-in-hawaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2019\/08\/unsettling-truths-about-the-1959-u-s-statehood-vote-in-hawaii\/","title":{"rendered":"Unsettling Truths about the 1959 U.S. Statehood Vote in Hawai\u2019i"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 16, 2019, marks the 60<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of U.S. Statehood for Hawai\u2019i.\u00a0 It will go little noticed.\u00a0\u00a0 This article offers new information on illegalities and fraudulence regarding the statehood vote, and why it should not have been accepted by the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>In 1945, the United States, as a founding member of the United Nations, accepted all U.N. Charter obligations.\u00a0 As a nation with Territories, under Article 73 of the Charter, it\u00a0took on, \u201cas\u00a0a sacred trust, the obligation to\u2026 develop self-government\u201d\u00a0for the descendants of the nations it had occupied.\u00a0 The U.S. did this for some territories.\u00a0 But in Hawaii, it did just the opposite.\u00a0 Our people\u2019s achieving \u201cthe full measure of self-governance\u201d was never mentioned.\u00a0\u00a0 The statehood vote offered only movement from a U.S. Territory to a U.S. state.\u00a0 Total absorption rather than required liberation.<\/p>\n<p>The ballot wording was bogus.\u00a0 U.N. Resolution 742 (VIII), adopted in 1953, required that plebiscites offer\u00a0\u201cfreedom of choosing between several possibilities, including independence.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The wording of the statehood ballot question was: \u201cShall Hawaii immediately be admitted into the Union as a State?\u201d\u00a0 The only possible answers were \u201cYes\u201d and \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 No option for independence was provided.\u00a0 The vote did not comply with\u00a0the Charter or Resolution 742.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_126501\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/iolani-hale-palace-hawaii-honolulu.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126501\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/iolani-hale-palace-hawaii-honolulu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/iolani-hale-palace-hawaii-honolulu.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/iolani-hale-palace-hawaii-honolulu-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-126501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ali&#8217;iolani Hale, completed in 1874, was the home of the Hawaiian Legislature in the days before annexation.<br \/>Judiciary History Center<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The UN Charter expects only the citizens of the occupied nation\u2014in our case the descendants of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects&#8211;will make decisions regarding their self-governance.\u00a0\u00a0 During the 61 years that Hawaii was a Territory, however, there was a huge in-migration of American settlers, as well as transient U.S. military personnel and their dependents.\u00a0 The 1900 census shows 2,900 Caucasians living in the islands.\u00a0 In 1959, it had ballooned to 202,230.\u00a0\u00a0 Any American citizen 20 years or older who had lived in Hawaii for at least a year was allowed to vote, even U.S. military.\u00a0\u00a0And they did.\u00a0 Thus, the wrong people voted.<\/p>\n<p>During the Territory era, the United States made tremendous efforts to inculcate belief in a virtuous America.\u00a0 During those six decades,\u00a0schools assiduously avoided any mention of\u00a0the U.S. invasion, overthrow, and takeover of the Hawaiian Kingdom\u2026or the skirting of the Constitution to achieve Annexation.\u00a0\u00a0 A valid referendum\u00a0<em>requires<\/em>\u00a0that voters give\u00a0<em>informed\u00a0<\/em>consent.\u00a0 But decades of US hiding the facts made informed consent impossible.\u00a0\u00a0 Had statehood voters known the truth. . . .<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_126297\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/queen-Liliuokalni-hawaii.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126297\" class=\"wp-image-126297\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/queen-Liliuokalni-hawaii.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/queen-Liliuokalni-hawaii.png 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/queen-Liliuokalni-hawaii-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-126297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hawaii\u2019s last Queen, Lili\u2019uokalani, deposed and placed under palace arrest by invading US marine forces in a coup d\u2019\u00e9tat engendered by American businessmen. She would die from grief at the palace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0official report states\u00a0that 94% of voters supported statehood, but the facts are quite different.\u00a0\u00a0 The 94% only counts the Yes and No votes cast.\u00a0 When blank ballots are included, only 77%\u00a0<em>of those who voted<\/em>\u00a0actually voted\u00a0<em>fo<\/em>r statehood.\u00a0 But even more shocking is the fact that, in the most important election ever held in Hawai\u2019i, only 35% of those of eligible age actually registered and turned up at the polls.\u00a0 Sixty-five percent \u201cvoted with their feet\u201d against statehood by staying home.\u00a0 When the blank votes and \u201cvotes with their feet\u201d are factored in, only 27% of eligible voters cast a \u2018Yes\u2019 vote at the polls, far below the 50% required to win.<\/p>\n<p>America knew that the UN would soon pass its \u201cDeclaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonized Countries and Peoples.\u201d \u00a0Great pressure would mount to liberate Hawai\u2019i.\u00a0 The statehood vote was a sham to quickly secure United Nations approval for US permanent retention of Hawaii&#8211;just twelve months and two days before the Declaration was passed.<\/p>\n<p>We three authors recently wrote \u201cA Call for Review of the Historical Facts Surrounding UNGA Resolution 1469 (xiv) of 1959 Which Recognized Attainment considering a proposal for a model of independence from the USA.\u00a0 He has been associated with Professor Emeritus Johan Galtung as a co-instructor at the University of Hawaii and has conducted
