2 Sep 2019 – Seven health centres in Syria\u2019s north-west have been reportedly attacked in recent days and two of them have been destroyed, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Attacks \u2018Verified on Four Facilities, Three Pending\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement, the UN health agency said that the facilities included four hospitals and two primary health care centres \u201cthat were functional at the time they were hit\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAttacks on four facilities have been verified according to WHO<\/a> reporting standards, and three are in process of verification,\u201d WHO said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne primary health care center had been previously evacuated in advance of military action. At least two injuries were reported, and two facilities were destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The attacks come amid increased hostilities in and around Syria\u2019s Idlib province \u2013 the last opposition stronghold in the country, which has been devastated by more than eight years of war.<\/p>\n

According to WHO, some 13.7 million people\u202fneed health assistance in Syria, including an estimated four million in the north-west.<\/p>\n

The UN agency says that the attacks happened between 28 and 30 August, the latest violence against civilians since fighting escalated in north-west Syria in late April.<\/p>\n

In August alone, it reported that more than 130,000 people were displaced from\u202fNorthern Hama and Idlib governorates.<\/p>\n

More than 500 Civilians Killed since Late April Escalation\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Condemning the military escalation in an update to the Security Council in New York last Thursday, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, said that more than 500 civilians had been killed and \u201cmany hundreds more injured\u201d in the last four months.<\/p>\n

Citing WHO and UNICEF<\/a>, Mr. Lowcock noted that 43 health facilities, 87 educational facilities, 29 water stations, and seven markets had been impacted since April.<\/p>\n

In an appeal to the belligerents to respect international humanitarian law, the UN official insisted that a UN-led probe – announced by the Secretary-General \u2013 were set to investigate incidents in north-west Syria \u201cwhich damaged or destroyed facilities which have either been deconflicted or received humanitarian support\u201d from the UN.<\/p>\n

\u201cI and other UN officials have repeatedly called on the parties and this Council to ensure respect for international humanitarian law,\u201d Mr. Lowcock insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople\u2019s homes, hospitals, schools, water systems and markets must be protected. There can be no reason, rationale, excuse or justification for the destruction of civilian areas on the scale seen in Idlib today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
