Saul Loeb\/Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>10 Sep 2019 &#8211; <\/em>The National Rifle Association <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/0b2eea0f775549eabef323e9f0b2f34a\" >filed suit<\/a> against the city of San Francisco yesterday after the city <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/04\/us\/san-francisco-nra-terrorist.html\" >declared<\/a> the gun rights group a \u201cdomestic terrorist organization.\u201d The city\u2019s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=7676565&amp;GUID=838518A4-4D1B-4D54-9B46-AA55FF83FCC6\" >resolution<\/a> that was introduced six weeks ago after at least three people were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2019\/07\/gilroy-garlic-festival-california-mass-shooting.html\" >shot and killed<\/a> at a garlic festival in Gilroy, California. After its passage last week, the board acknowledged the nonbinding resolution had little practical effect beyond its portrayal of the NRA, which the board hopes will spur the city to curtail relationships with companies that do business with the NRA. A spokesperson for the NRA dismissed the resolution as a \u201csound-bite remedy,\u201d but that hasn\u2019t stopped the gun advocacy group from taking the fight to court.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA\u2019s suit says San Francisco\u2019s terrorist designation violates the group\u2019s First Amendment right to free speech. The court filing called the label a \u201cfrivolous insult,\u201d but that \u201cSan Francisco\u2019s actions pose a nonfrivolous constitutional threat.\u201d \u201c[M]embers and supporters will suffer irrecoverable loss and irreparable harm if the members and supporters are unable to obtain government contracts because of their constitutionally-protected rights, or if the NRA is deprived of vendor, contractor, member or donor relationships when persons intimidated by the Resolution sever their NRA ties,\u201d the suit said.
