were false.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-49633136?\" class=\"story-body__link\" >Worker who protected indigenous tribes killed in Amazon <\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-49515462?\" class=\"story-body__link\" >Are forest fires as bad as they seem?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Friday, Finland urged EU countries to consider stopping importing beef and soybeans from Brazil in order to put pressure on Brazil to tackle the fires.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s President Jair Bolsonaro has faced criticism for failing to protect the region.<\/p>\n<p>More than 80,000 fires have broken out in the Amazon rainforest so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Experts believe the majority of the fires across Brazil this year are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-49515462\" class=\"story-body__link\" >caused by human activity such as farmers and loggers clearing land<\/a> for crops or grazing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Environmentalists Will Be Sceptical<\/h3>\n<p><strong>By Roger Harrabin, BBC Environment Analyst<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Environmentalists will say this scheme is a ruse to open up the Amazon for mining, logging and farming.<\/p>\n<p>When roads are driven into the forest it attracts more settlers, who clear land and hunt wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The land clearance &#8211; even on a quite small basis &#8211; leads to changed weather patterns, which harm the forest.<\/p>\n<p>Environmentalists will argue the best way of saving the rainforest is to leave it in the hands of indigenous people.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><\/figure>\n<p>Environmentalists say Mr Bolsonaro&#8217;s policies have led to an increase in fires this year and that he has encouraged cattle farmers to clear large areas of the rainforest since his election last October.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_143028\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/amazon-fires-deforestation.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143028\" class=\"wp-image-143028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/amazon-fires-deforestation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/amazon-fires-deforestation.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/amazon-fires-deforestation-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-143028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EPA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr Araujo said: &#8220;We want to be together in the endeavour to create development for the Amazon region which we are convinced is the only way to protect the forest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we need new initiatives, new productive initiatives, that create jobs, that create revenue for people in the Amazon and that&#8217;s where our partnership with the United States will be very important for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the biodiversity investment fund would support businesses in hard to reach areas of the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;The Brazilians and the American teams will follow through on our commitment that our presidents made in March.
