Signatories include previous coordinators at FUNAI, Indigenous people, and field workers.<\/p>\n<p>The human rights group<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.survivalinternational.org\/news\/12234\" > Survival International<\/a> translated some of the letter into English and circulated it online Monday:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The experts are &#8220;extremely worried&#8221; that Pereira has been sacked &#8220;for no apparent technical reason,&#8221; and that his dismissal &#8220;represents yet another backwards step in the policy to protect uncontacted tribes.&#8221; They note that &#8220;this upheaval will provoke the genocide of uncontacted and recently contacted Indigenous peoples.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Survival International&#8217;s advocacy director, Fiona Watson, pointed out that &#8220;for decades, Brazil has led the way in the protection of uncontacted tribes&#8217; lands, recognizing that they&#8217;re the most vulnerable peoples on the planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But President Bolsonaro is clearly intent on completely dismantling this work, and wants to open up indigenous territories across Brazil to loggers, miners, and ranchers,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He doesn&#8217;t care how many Indigenous people die in the process, and has openly expressed his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/survivalinternational.org\/articles\/3540-Bolsonaro\" >racist contempt<\/a> for them on many occasions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a pivotal moment for the future of uncontacted tribes, and therefore for all humanity,&#8221; Watson concluded. &#8220;Either people around the world stand shoulder to shoulder with the Indigenous peoples fighting for their very survival, or we watch as genocide is committed in front of our eyes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Breaking: Brazilian experts release a damning statement warning \u201cgenocide is underway\u201d against uncontacted tribes.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the sacking of Bruno Pereira, the head of gov dept charged with protecting uncontacted tribes\u2019 lands.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopBrazilsGenocide?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#StopBrazilsGenocide<\/a><br \/> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4J29AsD0oZ\" >https:\/\/t.co\/4J29AsD0oZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Survival International (@Survival) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Survival\/status\/1181204777058934786?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >October 7, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Last week saw not only Pereira&#8217;s dismissal but also, as <em>The Guardian <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/oct\/07\/brazil-bolsonaro-tribes-genocide-expert-warning?CMP=share_btn_tw\" >noted<\/a>, an announcement from Bolsonaro&#8217;s mining minister, Bento Albuquerque, that &#8220;draft legislation to allow mining and agriculture on Indigenous lands should be ready later this month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the newspaper, which reported on the experts&#8217; letter Monday:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Pereira said he could not comment on the reason for his dismissal as he didn&#8217;t have any information about it. He said FUNAI should be the ones to explain why he was fired.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Isolated Indigenous people are extremely vulnerable. They don&#8217;t have political support; they don&#8217;t speak with journalists or other Indigenous groups,&#8221; Pereira said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>FUNAI described Pereira&#8217;s dismissal as part of a management restructuring to &#8220;optimize work in progress.&#8221; His replacement, Paula Wolthers de Lorena Pires, is an anthropologist and Indigenous specialist.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Carlos Meirelles, a signatory of the letter who pioneered FUNAI&#8217;s &#8220;no contact&#8221; policy, told\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em> that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;it&#8217;s almost as if this government has a rule: to remove dedicated and competent people and put incompetents in their place.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reporting on the letter came as Pope Francis <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/c7dcb69eae7a4938a70757bc47ca4c33\" >delivered<\/a> a speech Monday as part of a three-week synod that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/06\/europe\/catholic-church-married-pope-intl\/index.html\" >began<\/a> at the Vatican Sunday to address religious and environmental issues in the Amazon region.<em> The Associated Press<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/7710c8d3eadb454ead73378ba14f4d8f\" >reported<\/a> that Indigenous people from several regional tribes as well as over 180 South American cardinals, bishops, and priests have traveled to the Vatican for the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>One of the experts invited to the synod, United Nations Special Rapporteur Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, told the <em>AP<\/em> that deforestation is leading to violence against Indigenous people. As she put it, &#8220;If we refuse to surrender our territories for cattle ranchers and soybean farms\u2014two of the main drivers of deforestation in the Amazon\u2014we are often labeled criminals, illegals, or terrorists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Based on data from FUNAI, Brazil <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.survivalinternational.org\/tribes\/uncontacted-brazil\" >has<\/a> more uncontacted tribes than any other country. A recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimi.org.br\/2019\/09\/a-maior-violencia-contra-os-povos-indigenas-e-a-apropriacao-e-destruicao-de-seus-territorios-aponta-relatorio-do-cimi\/\" >report<\/a> from Brazil&#8217;s Missionary Indigenous Council <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/cd873da63ffb412e9356ea53ca37bac3\" >found<\/a> at least 160 cases of &#8220;possessive invasions, illegal exploitation of natural resources [and] damage to heritage&#8221; on Indigenous lands since Bolsonaro took office for his first term in January. That figure compared with 111 recorded cases for all of 2018 under Bolsonaro&#8217;s predecessor.<\/p>\n<p>When those findings were released on Sept. 24, the <em>AP<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/cd873da63ffb412e9356ea53ca37bac3\" >reported<\/a> that Catholic priest Roque Paloschi, who heads the council, said in a press conference that Bolsonaro&#8217;s &#8220;aggressive rhetoric fuels violence against Indigenous land and peoples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s report was released the same day that Bolsonaro <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/09\/24\/brazilians-blast-bolsonaros-un-speech-denying-amazon-devastation-total-scam\" >gave<\/a> his first speech to the U.N. General Assembly\u2014during which he reiterated some of his common messages about Indigenous people in Brazil and claimed that his government &#8220;is solemnly committed to environmental preservation and sustainable development,&#8221; despite mounting global concern and criticism over the summer surge in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/09\/20\/future-earth-risk-new-drone-footage-deforestation-amazon-shows-cost-meat-industry\" >deforestation<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/08\/30\/tipping-point-un-biodiversity-chief-warns-burning-amazon-could-lead-cascading\" >fires<\/a> in the Amazon rainforest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;As expected, Bolsonaro&#8217;s speech at the United Nations has doubled down on division, on nationalism, and on ecocide,&#8221; the Brazilian Climate Observatory said at the time. &#8220;Bolsonaro&#8217;s policies bring an immediate risk to all humankind.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>____________________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Our work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License.
