{"id":15238,"date":"2011-10-31T12:00:19","date_gmt":"2011-10-31T11:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=15238"},"modified":"2011-10-25T01:18:28","modified_gmt":"2011-10-25T00:18:28","slug":"act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-that-threatens-more-than-162000-people-in-tanzania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2011\/10\/act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-that-threatens-more-than-162000-people-in-tanzania\/","title":{"rendered":"Act Now: Stop Imminent Land Grab That Threatens More Than 162,000 People in Tanzania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/letter-sierra-club-us-and-sierra-club-canada-do-not-displace-162000-people-tanzania\"  target=\"_self\">Read the Letter from Sierra Club US and Sierra Club Canada to AGRISOL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iowa-based investor Bruce Rastetter and fellow investors in the industrial agricultural corporation\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/land-deals-africa\/agrisol-energy-llc\"  target=\"_self\">AgriSol Energy<\/a>\u00a0have their sights on 800,000 acres (325,000 hectares) of land in Tanzania that is home to 162,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed site is inhabited by former refugees from neighboring Burundi.\u00a0Most of the residents, several generations of families who have successfully re-established their lives by developing and farming the land over the last 40 years, will be displaced against their will.\u00a0They will lose their livelihoods and their community.\u00a0Once they are gone, Agrisol Energy will move in.<\/p>\n<p>Despite rising international criticism of the proposed plan to evict the residents in the proposed lease areas for foreign investors, the Tanzanian government plans to move forward with the project.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-threatens-more-162000-people-tanzania#sdendnote1sym\" ><sup>i<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We need your help today to make sure that won\u2019t happen. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-threatens-more-162000-people-tanzania#message\"  target=\"_self\">Please send a message to Bruce Rastetter, other principal investors, and the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, to urge them to drop this project.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>AgriSol has promoted this large-scale land acquisition as a project to transform Tanzania into a \u201cregional agricultural powerhouse\u201d by combining the country\u2019s abundant agricultural natural resources with \u201cmodern\u201d farming practices, including the use of genetically modified crops.<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-threatens-more-162000-people-tanzania#sdendnote2sym\" ><sup>ii<\/sup><\/a> Unfortunately, AgriSol\u2019s plans&#8211;which include seeking Strategic Investor Status<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-threatens-more-162000-people-tanzania#sdendnote3sym\" ><sup>iii<\/sup><\/a> from the Tanzanian government that would grant them tax holidays and other critical investment incentives (including waiver of duties on agricultural and industrial equipment supplies, export guarantees, and certainty for use of GMO and Biotech and production of biofuels), while generating tremendous profit for the investors<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/media.oaklandinstitute.org\/act-now-stop-imminent-land-grab-threatens-more-162000-people-tanzania#sdendnote4sym\" ><sup>iv<\/sup><\/a>&#8211;will do little, if anything, for Tanzanians.
