Lehtikuva\/Vesa Moilanen via REUTERS<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>10 Dec 2019 &#8211; <\/em>Thirty-four-year-old Social Democrat Sanna Marin took office in Finland today as the world\u2019s youngest serving prime minister, heading a coalition with four other parties led by women, all but one of them under 35.<\/p>\n<p>Marin won the confidence of parliament with 99 votes in favor and 70 against.<\/p>\n<p>She replaced Antti Rinne, who resigned last week after the Centre Party, one of the members of governing center-left coalition, said it had lost confidence in him over his handling of a postal strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to build a society in which every child can become anything and in which every human being can live and grow old with dignity,\u201d Marin wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The new cabinet takes over in the middle of labor unrest and a wave of strikes which have halted production at some of Finland\u2019s largest companies for three days.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"fi\" dir=\"ltr\">Nelj\u00e4ss\u00e4 vuodessa Suomi ei tule valmiiksi, mutta se voi tulla paremmaksi. Finland has truly taken the gender issues to the next level: all coalition parties are now led by women!\u201d tweeted new European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve ministers in the new cabinet are women and just seven are men. The head of the Centre Party, Katri Kulmuni, 32, becomes finance minister, Green Party leader Maria Ohisalo, 34, continues as interior minister and the Left Alliance\u2019s chairwoman Li Andersson, 32, remains education minister.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish People\u2019s Party\u2019s Anna-Maja Henriksson, 55, remains justice minister, the only coalition leader to finish school before the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>Despite outward shows of harmony, divisions remain between the main coalition partners, Marin\u2019s Social Democrats and the Centre Party.<\/p>\n<p>Marin will struggle to defend her leftist views against the Centre Party, which wants action to boost Finnish employment to pay for the costly welfare state.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is my great pleasure to congratulate the new Finnish Prime Minister <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarinSanna?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@MarinSanna<\/a>. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Finland?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#Finland<\/a> has truly taken the gender issues to the next level: all Coalition parties are now led by women! I look forward to working with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FinGovernment?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >@FinGovernment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/1204381209956143104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >December 10, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Center Party chairwoman Kulmuni defended her decision to force out Rinne, accusing him of having taken the employees\u2019 side in recent labor market disputes when he should have remained neutral.<\/p>\n<p>Before his resignation, Rinne defended the publicly-owned postal service\u2019s employees in their labor dispute by saying their employment conditions would not be trampled while his government was in office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became sort of a habit to flag in advance in favor of one side, in matters which should be dealt with cool impartiality,\u201d Kulmuni wrote in a long post on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Marin said recreating trust between the coalition partners was one of her first tasks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt demands discussion, a direct one,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Marin said she would keep using social media \u2014 but with care.<\/p>\n<p>Defending her frequent use of social media, she said: \u201dI present a younger generation but of course, when it comes to social media or Instagram, I think that I\u2019m an individual, a person, a real person even though I\u2019m a prime minister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I won\u2019t change the way I behave.
