Because people differ in \u201cimmune competence\u201d \u2014 their ability to fend off and overcome infection. Proven methods can strengthen that ability. Yet amid debates about how quickly and strictly we must keep apart and stay home, this powerful complement to avoiding exposure and treating infection is being largely ignored. We\u2019re striving to keep the virus away from people and cure them if they get sick, but without also strengthening our natural defenses. This is a serious omission, and you can help fix it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d77f\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Isolation, distancing, handwashing \u2014 all the effective ways to avoid exposure to the virus \u2014 remain absolutely crucial to avoid catastrophic overwhelm of healthcare. But that exclusive focus obscures a second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdcast.io\/e\/covid-19-virtual-summit\/6\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">powerful tool<\/a>: <em class=\"jq\">strengthening our immune and body-repair competences can slow contagion too.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdcast.io\/e\/covid-19-virtual-summit\/29\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><em class=\"jq\">Both<\/em><\/a> these strategies buy time to find and isolate outbreaks, surge test kits and ventilators, improve and deliver therapies, and develop vaccines.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e69e\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Stronger immune competence also makes COVID-19 <em class=\"jq\">and<\/em> other more ordinary infections milder and briefer. Reducing the risk of fatal pneumonias \u2014 especially for the old, sick, and poor \u2014 creates \u201cvirtual ven\u00adtila\u00adtors\u201d to augment scarce real ones. Milder, briefer illness saves suffering and cost, makes working from home more productive and unexpected excess parenting less challenging, and helps us adapt to these strange new circumstances. And an \u201cim\u00ad\u00ad\u00admunity mission\u201d \u2014 boosting our overall immunity within our communities \u2014 could engage our pent-up yearning to protect each other by cultivating health.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c69b\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Yet individual and community immunity aren\u2019t on the <a href=\"http:\/\/cdc.gov\/\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">CDC<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/who.int\/\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">WHO<\/a> websites, nor in great articles from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2020\/03\/where-do-you-go-if-you-get-coronavirus\/607759\/\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><em class=\"jq\">The Atlantic<\/em><\/a><em class=\"jq\">, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/world\/corona-simulator\/\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><em class=\"jq\">Washington Post<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/what-it-means-to-contain-and-mitigate-the-coronavirus\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><em class=\"jq\">New Yorker<\/em><\/a><em class=\"jq\">,<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/3\/14\/21175124\/coronavirus-outbreak-covid-19-what-to-read-essential-reading-guide)\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><em class=\"jq\">Vox<\/em><\/a>. We\u2019re told to avoid exposure, but not to reduce \u201chost hospitality\u201d (us being hospitable to the virus) by making ourselves more resistant to viral infection. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/03\/13\/opinion\/coronavirus-trump-response.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Slowing the spread<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/11\/science\/coronavirus-curve-mitigation-infection.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">flattening the curve<\/a> will take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdcast.io\/e\/covid-19-virtual-summit\/6\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">both<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a75e\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><mark class=\"qr qs mk\">On March 10 (though not in <\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/11\/science\/coronavirus-curve-mitigation-infection.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">later<\/a><\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"> pathfinding <\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/03\/13\/opinion\/coronavirus-trump-response.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">articles<\/a><\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\">), <\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"><em class=\"jq\">The<\/em><\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"> <\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"><em class=\"jq\">New York Times <\/em><\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\">broke the silence, <\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/10\/well\/live\/can-i-boost-my-immune-system.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">endorsing<\/a><\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"> five of eight standard immune-boosting methods: sleep, calm\/hope\/de-stressing (yes, <\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/flu\/indepth#hed4\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">meditation<\/a><\/mark><mark class=\"qr qs mk\"> may help prevent colds), nutrition, exercise, and reducing alcohol (an immune suppressant). Next, add hydration, nontoxicity, and physiological balance. All are vital: your health and immunity depend on what you eat, drink, breathe, do, and feel.<\/mark><\/p>\n<p id=\"9217\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The article also edged more controversially toward two of the half-dozen supplements that can boost immunity \u2014 vitamin D and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mv.helsinki.fi\/home\/hemila\/Zinc.htm\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">zinc<\/a>. Otherwise, news organizations\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facts-and-myths-about-boosting-your-immune-system-11584050588\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">standard<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facts-and-myths-about-boosting-your-immune-system-11584050588\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">advice<\/a> is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/10\/well\/live\/can-i-boost-my-immune-system.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">skip unproven supplements<\/a>\u201d that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/23\/well\/live\/coronavirus-supplements-herbs-vitamins-colds-flu.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">probably won\u2019t help, and may harm<\/a>\u201d \u2014 notably vitamin C, a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/05\/briefing\/coronavirus-briefing-what-happened-today.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">myth<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/parenting.nytimes.com\/childrens-health\/prevent-coronavirus\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">fallacy<\/a>\u201d that doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/09\/health\/fda-letter-coronavirus-cures.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">protect<\/a>. So our best newspapers say supplements can\u2019t boost immunity. Maybe they\u2019re not reading the research right.<\/p>\n<p id=\"390a\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Meanwhile, one to six grams per day (g\/d) of a certain substance was <a href=\"https:\/\/jintensivecare.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40560-020-0432-y\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">proven<\/a> to shorten the use of a ventilator for 471 patients needing more than ten hours of ventilator support, by an average of 25% (even more for the sickest patients). That reduction in patient requirements is like discovering a lot of unused ventilators. An average of about 2 g\/d of the same substance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/11\/4\/708\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">shortened<\/a> ICU stays by 8.6%, equivalent to a lot more ICU beds. A day\u2019s dose costs 58\u00a2 (top quality, retail price), so there is now good evidence we can spend a few dollars to reduce an ICU stay that costs thousands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"55ff\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Well-controlled trials <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu9040339\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">found<\/a> the same substance could prevent and help treat pneumonia. When <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.pharmthera.2018.04.007\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">sepsis<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/14787210.2020.1706483\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">influenza A<\/a> pneumonia caused life-threatening <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orthomolecular.org\/resources\/omns\/v16n11.shtml\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">respiratory<\/a> failures, tens-of-g\/d intravenous doses of the same substance proved safe and effective. The <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/bF2YhJKiOfe1yimBc4XwOA\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Shanghai Government Medical Association<\/a> and a top Xi\u2019an <a href=\"http:\/\/2yuan.xjtu.edu.cn\/Html\/News\/Articles\/21774.html\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">hospital<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3760\/cma.j.issn.1000-6680.2020.0016\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">use and recommend it<\/a> for COVID-19, with three clinical trials underway (one already <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04264533\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">posted<\/a>). Fifty tons of it just got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orthomolecular.org\/resources\/omns\/v16n13.shtml\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">shipped<\/a> to Wuhan, where success has now led many <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/03\/24\/new-york-hospitals-treating-coronavirus-patients-with-vitamin-c\/\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">New York hospitals<\/a> to adopt this therapy in severe COVID-19 cases, with encouraging results.<\/p>\n<p id=\"497c\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What\u2019s this mysterious substance? The same vitamin C that mainstream media dismiss as having little or no benefit against viral respiratory infections! Based on modern studies and recent rigorous evaluations, vitamin C is far more than just a \u201cvitamin\u201d; it is a foundational molecule that protects and regulates every cell, and actually seems to be <strong class=\"jg kf\">the most effective antiviral agent known<\/strong>. So why do some say to take none a day?<\/p>\n<p id=\"eb95\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The medical <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/14651858.CD000980.pub4\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">evidence<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/parenting.nytimes.com\/childrens-health\/prevent-coronavirus\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">cited<\/a> (also by <a href=\"https:\/\/nccih.nih.gov\/health\/providers\/digest\/cold-science#heading2\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">NIH<\/a>) as supposedly debunking the use of vitamin C in respiratory illness \u2014 the 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/CD000980\/ARI_vitamin-c-for-preventing-and-treating-the-common-cold\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Cochrane Review<\/a> of 64 clinical trials \u2014 <em class=\"jq\">actually found consistent curative value<\/em>, especially at higher doses and in children. Its senior author <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu9040339\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">concluded<\/a> that \u201call 21 placebo-controlled studies published since 1970\u201d using at least one gram per day of vitamin C reported milder or shorter colds. He also wrote the papers cited above on ventilator and ICU savings, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28353648\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">citations<\/a> above on pneumonia prevention and mitigation. \u201c[I]nertia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/11\/4\/708\/htm\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">prejudices<\/a> against vitamin C\u201d persist, as his excellent review <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu9040339\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">paper<\/a> explains, based largely on outdated and poorly performed studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mv.helsinki.fi\/home\/hemila\/flawed_vitC_colds.htm\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">demolished<\/a> decades ago. Indeed, his Cochrane Review recom\u00admended that \u201cconsistent effect of vitamin C on\u2026duration and severity\u2026and low cost and safety\u201d may make it \u201cworthwhile for common cold patients to test on an individual basis whether thera\u00adpeutic vitamin C is beneficial for them. Further therapeutic\u2026 [trials] are warranted.\u201d That\u2019s hardly a description of a myth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dcfd\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Doubts whether vitamin C can also help to <em class=\"jq\">prevent<\/em> colds confuse evidence of absence with absence of evidence: NIH rightly <a href=\"https:\/\/nccihnih.gov\/health\/flu\/indepth#hed4\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">found<\/a> \u201cnot enough evidence,\u201d and a Danish review <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/S0007114509993229\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">agreed<\/a> the clinical trials available by 2010 (nearly all even today) are \u201clargely irrelevant.\u201d Why? Evidence-based medicine requires large, controlled, usually randomized and double-blind, clinical trials \u2014 but industry and govern\u00adment won\u2019t fund their high cost for unpatent\u00adable over-the-counter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ascorbate\/dp\/B0020KCBX2\/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=Hickey+Roberts+Ascorbate&amp;qid=1584645577&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1-fkmr0\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">supplements<\/a>. Such trials are <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu5125161\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">especially difficult<\/a> to perform rigorously for vitamin C. Further, that Cochrane Review rested on deeply flawed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD000980.pub4\/full\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">clinical trials<\/a>. Nearly all doses were far <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1N__0lqppKnMyzYxkfHPD5NnyBOK6-FTs\/view\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">too small or infrequent<\/a> to trigger the threshold effects that practitioners claim and science predicts. Unreport\u00aded <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@matthigginson\/a-users-guide-to-vitamin-c-in-the-context-of-covid-19-e6907da69787\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quality<\/a> of the vitamin C used may have made doses <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1N__0lqppKnMyzYxkfHPD5NnyBOK6-FTs\/view\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">severalfold less effective<\/a>. Outcomes were linked to whether subjects took <em class=\"jq\">any<\/em> C, but only rarely to how much or how often. And decisively, <strong class=\"jg kf\"><em class=\"jq\">\u201c<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD000980.pub4\/detailed-comment\/en?messageId=244227054\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><strong class=\"jg kf\"><em class=\"jq\">none<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"jg kf\"><em class=\"jq\"> of the iden\u00adti\u00adfied controlled trials directly test[ed]\u201d the preventive claims that the Review supposedly refuted.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"1245\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">With no better evidence, then, what should we do? Cochrane Review, NIH, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/yellowbook\/2020\/preparing-international-travelers\/complementary-and-integrative-health-approaches\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">CDC<\/a> agree vitamin C is generally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/11\/4\/708\/htm\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">safe<\/a> (minor exceptions are clear). Even top-quality C (fully buffered, fully reduced <em class=\"jq\">l<\/em>-ascorbate, described and sourced in a medically vetted lay <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@matthigginson\/a-users-guide-to-vitamin-c-in-the-context-of-covid-19-e6907da69787\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">user\u2019s guide<\/a>) is cheap and ubiquitous. Seventy-odd <a href=\"https:\/\/drlauda.at\/images\/pdf\/omns\/Nutritional_Treatment_of_Coronavirus.pdf\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">years\u2019<\/a> unrefuted observations, buttressed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14787210.2020.1706483\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">hundreds<\/a> of basic-science <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu9040339\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">papers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1005\/14651858.CD000980.pub4\/detailed-comment\/en?messageId=244227054\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">show<\/a> that <strong class=\"jg kf\">at least 3\u20135 grams per day, spread through the day,<\/strong> <strong class=\"jg kf\">largely protects against known viruses.<\/strong> That\u2019s equivalent to about 40\u201370 medium-sized oranges per day. Taking <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1D_7E_xVMgJk8lQ21nJH6Yy-KwjUX9Dyl\/view\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">more<\/a>, nearly to stool-loosening level, is even better. (A 2018 trial with 1,444 Korean Army recruits given 2 grams three times a day <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1136\/bmjmilitary-2019-001384\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">found<\/a> 20\u201340% fewer colds.) Therefore:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"c0b7\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp kg kh ki\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Even if <em class=\"jq\">no<\/em> supplement worked, we should take better care of ourselves in all <em class=\"jq\">other<\/em> ways that boost immune and repair competence. Public-health strategy should <em class=\"jq\">combine<\/em> reducing exposure to the virus with making any infections fewer, shorter, and milder.<\/li>\n<li id=\"bf80\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf kj gh kk jj kl jl km jn kn jp kg kh ki\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Cochrane Review <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/nu90440339\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">found<\/a> that even little and infrequent vitamin C <em class=\"jq\">did<\/em> make colds shorter and milder. Various viruses, including corona\u00adviruses, cause colds, so taking vitamin C should make COVID-19 illness shorter and milder too, and the pandemic less severe, <em class=\"jq\">even if<\/em> vitamin C doesn\u2019t prevent infection<em class=\"jq\">.<\/em> It may still make the course of the illness less severe, reducing the burden on our healthcare system.<\/li>\n<li id=\"3986\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf kj gh kk jj kl jl km jn kn jp kg kh ki\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">So shouldn\u2019t at least healthcare, EMS, grocery-store, pharmacy, delivery, and other frontline workers, and groups most at risk of severe illness (old, sick, poor, homeless, refugees, prisoners), be encouraged and helped to start using this safe, cheap, easy, and available substance <em class=\"jq\">now<\/em>?<\/li>\n<li id=\"641a\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf kj gh kk jj kl jl km jn kn jp kg kh ki\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Simple question: Is it riskier to take <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@matthigginson\/a-users-guide-to-vitamin-c-in-the-context-of-covid-19-e6907da69787\" class=\"cu dw jr js jt ju\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enough high-quality<\/a> vitamin C that may keep you well and seems to help cure you if you get sick, or to take none?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"559b\" class=\"je jf ap by jg b gf jh gh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp ff\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">With or without supplements, stronger community immunity is a low-risk, equity-enhancing, socially mobilizing way to do no harm, do much good, and buy precious time. Immunity will become even more vital if no universal-vaccine miracle emerges and if this single-strand RNA virus\u2019s rapid mutations outpace specific vaccines.
