Iran has received medical equipment from France, Germany and Britain, under a trade mechanism that circumvents the US sanctions on the country, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

31 Mar 2020 – <\/em>In the first transaction of its kind, France, Germany and Britain have sent medical goods to Iran\u00a0under a trade mechanism set up to bypass US\u00a0sanctions against Tehran.<\/p>\n

In January 2019, the three European countries, known as the E3, developed the trade mechanism \u2014 dubbed INSTEX \u2014\u00a0as a workaround to export goods to Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cINSTEX and its Iranian counterpart STFI will work on more transactions and enhancing the mechanism,\u201d the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThese goods are now in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

The German Foreign Ministry did not specify what was included in the shipment, only confirming its arrival. Citing people familiar with the transaction, The Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported Tuesday that \u201cthe sale was equipment related to blood treatment from a German exporter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Donald Trump administration imposed tough economic sanctions on Iran in 2018 after withdrawing from the nuclear accord reached by the Barack Obama administration, five other world powers and Iran in 2015. The reimposition of energy sanctions have since crippled Iran\u2019s economy and prompted Tehran to retaliate by breaching its commitments under the nuclear deal.<\/p>\n

The Islamic Republic, meanwhile, is grappling with the Middle East<\/a>\u2019s worst coronavirus outbreak<\/a>. The death toll climbed to 2,898 on Tuesday, with more than 44,000 confirmed cases, Iran\u2019s Health Ministry said.<\/p>\n

The White House has resisted calls from some world leaders and human rights organizations to ease its \u201cmaximum pressure\u201d campaign of sanctions against Iran<\/a>, which Tehran says is hampering its ability to contain the virus. Officials in Iran have increasingly taken to social media to condemn the United States for what it calls “economic terrorism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stressed in a Tuesday news conference that the United States has offered humanitarian assistance to Iran in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0Medicine and medical supplies are exempted from US sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they make the claim that they just don\u2019t have the money to feed their people, these are decisions that these people’s\u00a0leaders have often made,\u201d Pompeo said of Iran and other sanctioned countries. \u201cIt is indeed quite sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week, Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said his country would not accept American assistance, calling US officials \u201ccharlatans and liars<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral times Americans have offered to help us to fight the pandemic. That is strange because you face shortages in America,\u201d Khamenei said in a televised speech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
