It\u2019s either incompetent or evil. As observed by Passage, a Canadian online publication, this is how mainstream American news media have generally been reporting on the Covid-19 pandemic and China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">When the death tolls and cases were rising, Beijing was accused of doing nothing and letting people die. When they started to decline, it was lying. Before Wuhan was put under an unprecedented lockdown, China was trying to \u201csave face\u201d by downplaying the health crisis. When the lockdown was imposed, it was a massive violation of human rights and a power grab.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">When Chinese citizens and overseas Chinese criticised Beijing, it was proof the central government had lost all legitimacy and trust. But when they celebrated the epidemic being put under control, they were stage actors or brainwashed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">Last week, the White House and Republican politicians rounded on US government-funded Voice of America for spreading \u201cBeijing\u2019s propaganda\u201d by quoting official Chinese coronavirus figures and showing footage of people celebrating the end of Wuhan\u2019s lockdown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-19418eac=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div data-v-22ae94a0=\"\" data-v-19418eac=\"\">\n<div data-v-19418eac=\"\" data-v-22ae94a0=\"\">\n<div class=\"details__body body\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">In a study by the non-profit FAIR (Fairness &amp; Accuracy in Reporting), when ordinary Chinese volunteered to help in the fight against the disease, they were described as \u201cneighbourhood busybodies\u201d in \u201cMao-style mass crusades\u201d (<em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\">The New York Times<\/em>, February 15). When Hubei government officials were sacked for withholding information about the coronavirus, CNN (February 13) and Business Insider (February 11) reported they were \u201cpurged\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-v-19418eac=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div data-v-22ae94a0=\"\" data-v-19418eac=\"\">\n<div data-v-19418eac=\"\" data-v-22ae94a0=\"\">\n<div class=\"details__body body body--next\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">When foreign governments and global organisations were critical of Beijing\u2019s anti-pandemic efforts, it was proof of Chinese incompetence or maleficence. But when they offered praise, they were either bought off or secretly \u201ccommunist\u201d sympathisers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">While fighting the epidemic, Beijing was accused of hoarding medical gear. When it offered medical aid to other countries, it was propaganda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--newsletter content--newsletter\" data-v-33e07123=\"\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div class=\"subscription align-center subscription--light subscription--article\" data-v-7bde8f10=\"\" data-v-33e07123=\"\">\n<div class=\"subscription__inner\" data-v-7bde8f10=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-v-19418eac=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div data-v-22ae94a0=\"\" data-v-19418eac=\"\">\n<div data-v-19418eac=\"\" data-v-22ae94a0=\"\">\n<div class=\"details__body body body--next\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">Outside China, few people have heard of Dr Zhang Jixian, who treated several patients with similar symptoms in early December at a Hubei provincial hospital and correctly deduced it was a novel coronavirus. She was officially recognised as the first to alert the authorities, thereby triggering the nationwide epidemic surveillance and saving countless lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">However, everyone knows about Dr Li Wenliang, who was reprimanded by public security, but was never arrested (as claimed by <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\">USA Today<\/em>, <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\">The Wall Street Journal<\/em> and <em class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--em content--em\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\">Los Angeles Times<\/em>) or otherwise punished, for inadvertently leaking information based on Dr Zhang\u2019s findings online. He tragically died from the disease at a young age. The \u201cwhistle-blower\u201d became a martyr; he was neither.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\n<p class=\"opinion-article__body article-details-type--p content--p\" data-v-e4bae94c=\"\" data-v-e8a63a52=\"\">\u201cFair and balanced\u201d reporting?
