{"id":161202,"date":"2020-05-25T12:00:52","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T11:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=161202"},"modified":"2020-05-19T05:49:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T04:49:14","slug":"new-leadership-for-a-new-normal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2020\/05\/new-leadership-for-a-new-normal\/","title":{"rendered":"New Leadership for a New Normal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_161203\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/World_Peace_Gong_au_National_Gandhi_Museum.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161203\" class=\"wp-image-161203\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/World_Peace_Gong_au_National_Gandhi_Museum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/World_Peace_Gong_au_National_Gandhi_Museum.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/World_Peace_Gong_au_National_Gandhi_Museum-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-161203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World Peace Gong National Gandhi Museum.<br \/>Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>18 May 2020 &#8211; <\/em><strong><em>Question<\/em><\/strong>: After Covid-19, in a world divided and fraught with global crises, will people find a way to work together to create a \u201cnew normal\u201d characterized by peace and justice for all?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Answer<\/em><\/strong>: Yes, with new leadership that speaks truth to power, enlists the people, and\u2014most importantly\u2013embraces nonviolence, a new normal can be created that provides a better world\u2026 for the children.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Krishna, Moses, all the sages through the ages, and Gandhi, King, and Mandela in the past 100 years, lived and died to teach us that nonviolence is the answer.\u00a0 Are there leaders today who have the ability to influence the world\u2019s people and all their governments to \u201ccommit to nonviolence?\u201d\u00a0 Yes, there are!<\/p>\n<p>The ideal leader is a person who can see that the first thing we must do to achieve a more peaceful and just world is unite under one umbrella.\u00a0 The response to Covid-19 of countless people confirms that people everywhere see the value of solidarity and unity. \u00a0The opportunity is here for leaders to create a new global peace movement to promote kindness, compassion, trust, respect, and <strong><em>stopping war!<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaders and Movements Must Come Together <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi Klein<\/strong> and <strong>Bill McKibben<\/strong> have highlighted the dangers and causes of catastrophic climate change, as well as remedies and strategies to rescue the planet.\u00a0 Klein and McKibben know we have to unite and think big.\u00a0 Klein <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v38\/n11\/naomi-klein\/let-them-drown\" >wrote,<\/a> <em>\u201c\u2026 strengthening the threads tying together our various issues and movements \u2013 is, I would argue, the most pressing task of anyone concerned with social and economic justice<\/em><em>.\u201d <\/em>Klein also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/naomi_klein_how_shocking_events_can_spark_positive_change\" >wrote<\/a><em>:\u00a0 <strong>\u201c<\/strong><\/em><strong>Sensible people are always telling us that change needs to come in small increments<\/strong><em>.\u00a0Well, we rejected all of that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recognizing the strength of the Golden Rule, religious scholar <strong>Karen Armstrong<\/strong> formed the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/charterforcompassion.org\/\" >Charter for Compassion<\/a> 10 years ago to bring together leaders of all religions. According to the Charter, \u201c<em>The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other organizations promoting unity include <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/michelle-obama-laura-bush-one-world-together-home\/?utm_source=Iterable&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=US_Apr_20_2020_Content_Digest\" >Global Citizen<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wethepeople.org\/\" >We, the People<\/a>, founded by <strong>Rick Ulfick<\/strong>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.one.org\/us\/\" >ONE<\/a>, founded by <strong>Bono<\/strong>, is dedicated to eradicating extreme poverty.\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newhumannewearthcommunities.wordpress.com\/category\/world-humanism\/\" >World Humanists<\/a> \u00a0, together with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/worldwithoutwar.com\/\" >World Without War<\/a> (WWW), recently sponsored the second <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theworldmarch.org\/en\/\" >World March for Peace and Nonviolence<\/a> to promote the strength of unity for stopping war.\u00a0 The founder of WWW, <strong>Rafael de la Rubia<\/strong>, visualizes nonviolence as the tool to change the world.<\/p>\n<p>Covid-19 prompted <strong>U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres<\/strong> to issue a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/chief-urges-global-cease-fire-fight-covid-19-69750691\" >call for a Global Cease-Fire\u2014 a critical recognition of the fact that <\/a>stopping wars affects all issues and that we need peace to devote significant efforts to the other crises \u00a0As Guterres <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/03\/1059972\" >noted<\/a>, \u201cIt is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are brilliant people leading their organizations and promoting new ideas that should be in the mainsteam:\u00a0 <strong>David Swanson<\/strong> from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/worldbeyondwar.org\/\" >World Beyond War<\/a>, <strong>Margaret Flowers<\/strong> and <strong>Kevin Zeese<\/strong> from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/popularresistance.org\/after-the-pandemic-a-ten-point-plan-for-the-collective-provision-of-basic-needs\/\" >Popular Resistance<\/a>, <strong>Marianne Williamson <\/strong>and <strong>Dennis Kucinich <\/strong>in politics, and economist <strong>Jeffrey Sachs <\/strong>from Columbia University who has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeffrey_Sachs\" >his finger<\/a> on the pulse of the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Madeleine Rees<\/strong>, the Secretary-General of Women\u2019s International League for Peace and Freedom (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wilpf.org\/\" >WILPF<\/a>) and <strong>Medea Benjamin<\/strong>, co-founder of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.codepink.org\/\" >CODEPINK<\/a>, in 2015 highlighted their initiative\u2019s slogans at the Geneva II Peace talks to stop the war in Syria.\u00a0 WILPF\u2019s slogan is \u201cWOMEN\u2019S POWER to STOP WAR.\u201d\u00a0 CODEPINK\u2019s slogan is \u201cWOMEN SAY NO TO WAR.\u201d\u00a0 These slogans highlight the direction to take to sustain and perpetuate the cease-fire and to create a nonviolent new normal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moving Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I believe the two individuals who most convincingly speak truth to power, and show the potential to unite all movements, all religions, all governors, mayors and community leaders, and all the \u201cpeople\u201d in every village, town, and city in every country under one umbrella \u2013 nonviolence,<strong> are Medea Benjamin and Naomi Klein.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medea Benjamin can connect all the women\u2019s organizations and initiatives that have already begun and have practiced mobilizing \u2014 the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WorkingFamilies\/videos\/10155756952061418\/\" >Women\u2019s March<\/a> on Washington, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/aljazeera\/videos\/10156096601978690\/\" >Women that marched in Jerusalem<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/12\/world\/asia\/women-aim-for-peace-in-korea-with-plan-to-walk-across-Demilitarized-Zone.html?_r=1\" >Women that Crossed the DMZ in Korea<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pressenza.com\/2019\/08\/women-lead-struggle-to-preserve-indian-democracy-in-face-of-rising-hindu-nationalism\/\" >Women in India<\/a>, and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/metoomvmt.org\/\" >#MeToo<\/a> movement-into one powerful force. It is time to \u201charness the energy and power\u201d of women and nonviolence to create trust and respect between nations and people!<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Klein can connect all the leaders mentioned above to join together, to take <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theleap.org\/\" >THE LEAP<\/a>, to promote both the climate movement and the peace movement in unison.\u00a0 We need both urgently!<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin and Klein have the knowledge and ability to create a \u201cCHAIN REACTION\u201d of leaders coming together around the world to begin and promote a new global peace movement in September 2020! \u00a0A list of leaders for the chain reaction is compiled and available for review.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introducing a Global Movement of Nonviolence, for the Children<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2002, the summer after the attacks on 9\/11, I began my efforts to stop war because I believed the United States could have addressed the attack without using the military.\u00a0 I found that grassroots initiatives for peace and humanitarian efforts were everywhere, all trying to unite.\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2012\/12\/15\/rise-up-mothers-it-s-time-to-end-gun-violence.html\" >Research<\/a> supported my theory that women had an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/builder\/lesson\/women-and-nonviolent-resistance-25771\" >advantage for creating peace<\/a> by promoting nonviolence (take away the threat of violence), especially if it was about protecting the children.<\/p>\n<p>It is my honor to announce a comprehensive plan for a Global Movement of Nonviolence (GMofNV), For the Children, led by women. \u00a0A GMofNV is not just for women, it is for everyone, as the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. was for everyone, not just African Americans.\u00a0 The <em>children<\/em> are the motivation for everyone to unite!<\/p>\n<p>The plan is for a GMofNV to be implemented by an initiative called a <em>CALL to WOMEN, a World-Wide Unity Campaign<\/em>.\u00a0 Non-governmental women leaders will ask women to be the first to rise-up and unite as the peacemakers.\u00a0 I have presented a GMofNV to U.N. Secretary-General Guterres for review!\u00a0 A GMofNV includes the largest marketing plan the world has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>We need something different and special because the obstacles to create a nonviolent new normal are enormous.\u00a0 A GMofNV is designed to be outside the box but it has tentacles reaching into every part of society.\u00a0 Historian and activist, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Howard_Zinn\" >Howard Zinn<\/a> was my confidante.\u00a0 He wrote to me<em>, \u201cYour \u2018Call to Women\u2019 is excellent. Well written, clear, strong. \u00a0No doubt women represent nonviolence best.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>A new nonviolent normal will not be easy to attain and will have risks.\u00a0 We need to create a new power to change the old; therefore there will be contention.\u00a0 <strong>Professor Marshall Ganz<\/strong>, on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/billmoyers.com\/segment\/marshall-ganz-on-making-social-movements-matter\/\" >NOW<\/a>, stated that we <em>need<\/em> contention.\u00a0 Therefore, we need a peace movement!<\/p>\n<p>We need elections, but we also need a peace movement because we are in an <strong>emergency<\/strong> situation.\u00a0 Mary Robinson, Ban Ki Moon, and Jerry Brown, at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ABCNews\/videos\/519713368750185\/\" >Doomsday Clock Update<\/a> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ABCNews\/videos\/519713368750185\/\" >see video<\/a> and Fast Forward to 25:30)\u00a0highlighted the world\u2019s crises and asked for action in 2020\u00a0because the <strong>global crises are so extreme.<\/strong>\u00a0 Also, experts are predicting that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/popularresistance.org\/the-pandemic-and-the-global-economy\/\" >economic difficulties<\/a> and potential chaos will be larger than the world has ever previously experienced. Ban Ki Moon, in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/theelders.cmail19.com\/t\/ViewEmail\/y\/BB738DB192AABC48\/9B484EC6EA5AF9DD025DA65DC0D0F53A\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Post by the Elders<\/a>, called for a people movement.\u00a0 People movements work, as illustrated by <strong>Bill Moyers<\/strong> in his compilation of different <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/billmoyers.com\/episode\/full-show-how-people-power-generates-change\/\" >episodes<\/a> of NOW.<\/p>\n<p>There will be no life-sustaining new normal if we do not commit to nonviolence, do not support a cease fire, and do not have a unified peace movement. Without such a commitment, military spending will take away our ability to achieve sustainable solutions to problems.\u00a0 Without a peace movement, the climate movement will fail, which means we failed.<\/p>\n<p>It is time for non-governmental leadership to guide the people to work together for peace and humanity!\u00a0 All the mechanisms are in place.\u00a0 The opportunity is here now!\u00a0 A GMofNV is one step away from beginning \u2013 enlist peace, social justice, and environmental leaders to promote a GMofNV and a CALL to WOMEN.\u00a0 The world must promote clean energy and change to a green economy to provide the basic needs of the people if peace is to be enduring.<\/p>\n<p>The women leaders cited in this paper can create a unified peace movement. \u00a0All the leaders together, promoting one voice for peace, can move the world along that path, building on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/popularresistance.org\/after-the-pandemic-a-ten-point-plan-for-the-collective-provision-of-basic-needs\/\" >incredible ideas<\/a> that exist for a new nonviolent normal.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Robinson\" ><strong>Mary Robinson<\/strong><\/a>, the former President of Ireland, former U.N.
