And don\u2019t panic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Parts of India are experiencing the worst locust invasion the country has seen <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-52804981\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">for 25 years<\/a>. Skies above large parts of north India have darkened during the day due to millions of locusts. Rajasthan is the worst affected state, but Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Punjab <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/nation\/to-counter-worst-locust-attack-in-years-centre-steps-up-operations-in-rajasthan-punjab-gujarat-mp-90740\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">have also experienced damaging swarms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/ag\/locusts\/en\/info\/info\/index.html\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">locust watch<\/a> website said the movement of the locusts has been affected by the strong westerly winds from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/may\/20\/super-cyclone-amphan-evacuations-in-india-and-bangladesh-slowed-by-virus\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">Cyclone Amphan<\/a>, which hit the coast of India earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>About 50,000 hectares have been affected by the insects so far. While produce in some parts of the country had already been harvested, in other areas farmers have seen the insects devour their crops. Honking horns and sounding police car sirens other methods deployed to try to ward the locusts off. In the fields, farmers have been playing loud music and banging anything they can find to stop the insects ravaging their crops.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe are hoping to contain it in the next 10 days,\u201d said an official in Barmer, in Rajasthan. \u201cOur officials are out spraying pesticide early in the morning. When the sun comes out and [the locusts] get warm is when they start flying. This year, they are younger, immature adults who fly faster and cover distances of up to 150km per day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, swarms were spotted in the city of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/video\/962948\/watch-locust-swarms-spotted-in-residential-localities-of-jaipur-rajasthan\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jaipur in Rajasthan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gurjar hopes the change in wind direction will spare Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring Pakistan declared a nationwide emergency in February after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/may\/25\/many-will-starve-locusts-devour-crops-and-livelihoods-in-pakistan\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">swarms devastated<\/a> parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s agriculture ministry is hoping to control the invasion before monsoon season hits north <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/india\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">India<\/a> at the end of June, when locusts mature and breed.
