However, it\u2019s an uncomfortable truth that we are responsible for the situation we find ourselves in. Respect for animals and their habitats is integral to human health and welfare and were it not for our complete disregard for wildlife and our exploitation of non-human species, the world today would be a very different place.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"fl-row fl-row-full-width fl-row-bg-none fl-node-5eecd61daa6ca\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6ca\">\n<div class=\"fl-row-content-wrap\">\n<div class=\"fl-row-content fl-row-fixed-width fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-group fl-node-5eecd61daa6cd\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6cd\">\n<div class=\"fl-col fl-node-5eecd61daa6ce\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6ce\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-5eecd61daa6cf\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6cf\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p>We already know that eating whale and dolphin meat can be bad for human health &#8211; the effects of which have been well documented. A lot is known about the effects of mercury, selenium and other heavy metals which accumulate over time in apex predators like whales and dolphins. In light of the coronavirus pandemic &#8211; which we know to have been transmitted to humans as a result of the consumption of wild animals &#8211; it is more important than ever to draw attention to the major potential health implications from \u00a0continuing to eat whales and dolphins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-row fl-row-full-width fl-row-bg-none fl-node-5eecd61daa6de\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6de\">\n<div class=\"fl-row-content-wrap\">\n<div class=\"fl-row-content fl-row-fixed-width fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-group fl-node-5eecd61daa6d8 fl-col-group-equal-height fl-col-group-align-center\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6d8\">\n<div class=\"fl-col fl-node-5eecd61daa6d9 fl-col-small\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6d9\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-photo fl-node-5eecd61daa6db\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6db\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-photo fl-photo-align-center\">\n<div class=\"fl-photo-content fl-photo-img-jpg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/harpooning-dolphin.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-163609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/harpooning-dolphin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/harpooning-dolphin.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/harpooning-dolphin-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/harpooning-dolphin-768x394.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-photo fl-photo-align-center\">\n<div class=\"fl-photo-content fl-photo-img-jpg\">The majority of studies may have focused on heavy metal contamination but there is a significant amount of information regarding other diseases that can be transmitted to humans through eating wild animals, including from whales and dolphins. For example, in 2017 in a community in Canada <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.whales.org\/2017\/07\/14\/community-in-canada-advised-not-to-eat-beluga-whale-meat-after-woman-dies\/\" >a woman died and her daughter became seriously ill<\/a> as a result of contracting botulism after consuming meat and blubber from a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/uk.whales.org\/whales-dolphins\/species-guide\/beluga-whale\/\" >beluga whale<\/a>, and in the early 2000s an entire community in southern Senegal became seriously ill after eating a <a href=\"http:\/\/humpback\" >humpback whale<\/a> who had stranded on the beach.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-row fl-row-full-width fl-row-bg-none fl-node-5eecd61daa6d1\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6d1\">\n<div class=\"fl-row-content-wrap\">\n<div class=\"fl-row-content fl-row-fixed-width fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-group fl-node-5eecd61daa6d2\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6d2\">\n<div class=\"fl-col fl-node-5eecd61daa6d3\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6d3\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-5eecd61daa6d4\" data-node=\"5eecd61daa6d4\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p>Only a very small number of countries <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/uk.whales.org\/our-4-goals\/stop-whaling\/\" >still kill and eat great whales<\/a>, and the consumption of dolphins, whales and other marine mammals is illegal in most countries. However, worldwide, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/uk.whales.org\/2018\/08\/06\/new-report-reveals-100000-dolphins-and-small-whales-hunted-every-year\/\" >many thousands of dolphins and small whales are hunted for meat every year<\/a>, and in several countries dolphins and small whales caught accidentally in fishing nets or washed up on beaches are widely consumed. Eating the meat from dolphins who have been found dead is particularly worrying as it is highly likely that they were ill before their death and so consuming their flesh carries even more dangers (the transmission of bacteria, parasites and viruses) if consumed by humans.<\/p>\n<p>We are all too aware of how quickly viruses can spread, and the devastating consequences they can have. Governments need to think about the global population and not just their own citizens when considering the long-term impacts of COVID-19 and their resulting actions. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/asia\/coronavirus-china-cases-deaths-who-wet-market-wuhan-a9462286.html\" >World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended the closure of \u2018wildlife markets\u2019<\/a> including the sale of \u2018bushmeat\u2019. Although the main focus of attention is likely to be on terrestrial species we must ensure that meat from marine species is not ignored. Eating whales, dolphins and other marine mammals could have consequences as deadly as consuming wild land animals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-photo fl-node-5eecd97a71799\" data-node=\"5eecd97a71799\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-photo fl-photo-align-center\">\n<div class=\"fl-photo-content fl-photo-img-jpg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/spinner-dolphin-lindsay-porter-sg-1024x681-1.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-163610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/spinner-dolphin-lindsay-porter-sg-1024x681-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/spinner-dolphin-lindsay-porter-sg-1024x681-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/spinner-dolphin-lindsay-porter-sg-1024x681-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/spinner-dolphin-lindsay-porter-sg-1024x681-1-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-5eecd98aee819\" data-node=\"5eecd98aee819\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p>The fallout from COVID-19 may also mean that coastal communities in some of the more developing nations turn to the ocean for their protein needs and although the International Whaling Commission (IWC \u2013 the body that regulates whale hunting) has already agreed measures to highlight the negative human health impacts caused by the consumption of whales and dolphins, several countries in West Africa for example, called for the consumption of marine mammals to be deemed a \u2018protein priority\u2019. \u00a0At this time, but more importantly, once the dust has settled, it is imperative that we continue to highlight the very real danger of diseases that can be transmitted from other species to humans.
