{"id":164389,"date":"2020-07-13T12:01:50","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T11:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=164389"},"modified":"2020-12-02T10:04:33","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T10:04:33","slug":"scientists-urge-who-to-address-airborne-spread-of-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2020\/07\/scientists-urge-who-to-address-airborne-spread-of-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Urge WHO to Address Airborne Spread of Coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-Covid-19.gif\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-164390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-Covid-19.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \"><em>6 Jul 2020 &#8211; <\/em>More than 200 scientists from over 30 countries are urging the World Health Organization to take more seriously the possibility of the airborne spread of the novel coronavirus as case numbers rise around the world and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2020\/national\/coronavirus-us-cases-deaths\/?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_web-gfx-death-tracker%3Ahomepage%2Fstory-ans&amp;itid=hp_hp-top-table-main_web-gfx-death-tracker%3Ahomepage%2Fstory-ans&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_2\"  target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surge in the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teaser-content\">\n<section>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">In a forthcoming paper titled \u201cIt is Time to Address Airborne Transmission of Covid-19,\u201d 239 signatories attempt to raise awareness about what they say is growing evidence that the virus can spread indoors through aerosols that linger in the air and can be infectious even in smaller quantities than previously thought.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"remainder-content\">\n<section>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Until recently, most public health guidelines have focused on social distancing measures, regular hand-washing and precautions to avoid droplets. But the signatories to the paper say the potential of the virus to spread via airborne transmission has not been fully appreciated even by public health institutions such as the WHO.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">The paper, which was shared with The Washington Post ahead of publication this week in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, comes as the WHO faces <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/trumps-critique-of-who-may-be-a-diversion-but-it-resonates-beyond-the-white-house\/2020\/04\/15\/c3320360-7b30-11ea-a311-adb1344719a9_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\"  target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticism<\/a> over its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2020\/02\/28\/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\" class=\"contextual_link\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus<\/a> response, calls for reform and a U.S. threat to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/05\/29\/trump-china-hong-kong-who\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8\"  target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cut funding and withdraw completely<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\"><em><span class=\" font--body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\" data-qa=\"interstitial-link-wrapper\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/coronavirus-vaccine-race-messenger-rna-imperial-college\/2020\/07\/05\/6565b2d0-ba2e-11ea-97c1-6cf116ffe26c_story.html?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_9\" class=\"\"  data-qa=\"interstitial-link\">Elegant but unproven, RNA experiments leap to the front in coronavirus vaccine race. Will they work?<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">The fact that scientists resorted to a paper to pressure the WHO is unusual, analysts said, and is likely to renew questions about the WHO\u2019s messaging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cWHO\u2019s credibility is being undermined through a steady drip-drip of confusing messages, including asymptomatic spread, the use of masks, and now airborne transmission,\u201d said Lawrence Gostin, a professor of global health law at Georgetown University who provides technical assistance to the organization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-of-Covid-19b.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-164392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-of-Covid-19b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-of-Covid-19b.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-of-Covid-19b-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Airborne-Transmission-of-Covid-19b-768x352.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">He praised the WHO for hosting regular briefings and acknowledged that the organization is in a tough spot because it \u201chas to make recommendations for the entire world and it feels it needs irrefutable scientific proof before coming to a conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">But he warned that \u201cthe public, and even scientists, will lose full confidence in WHO without clearer technical guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">A spokesperson for the organization said it is aware of media reports about the issue and will have technical experts review the matter. The agency has repeatedly defended its handling of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">The WHO, which was founded in 1948, is the U.N. agency tasked with promoting global health. It plays a critical role in expanding access to health care, setting up vaccination programs and fighting diseases such as polio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">But its portfolio has grown faster than its budget. And in times of crisis, it has often struggled to lead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"remainder-content\">\n<section>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Since the early days of the coronavirus crisis, the WHO and its director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, have been dogged by questions about whether the agency\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/asia_pacific\/chinese-officials-note-serious-problems-in-coronavirus-response-the-world-health-organization-keeps-praising-them\/2020\/02\/08\/b663dd7c-4834-11ea-91ab-ce439aa5c7c1_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_22\"  target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effusive praise for China<\/a> created a false sense of security and potentially spurred the spread of covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">That criticism has been compounded at various points by questions about its positions on technical issues, including transmission, mask use \u2014 and, now, airborne transmission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">The signatories to the paper contend that the virus can still spread through aerosols, or tiny respiratory droplets, that infected people cough or otherwise release into the air. In crowded or poorly ventilated indoor settings, this could be especially dangerous, and would account for a number of \u201csuperspreading\u201d incidents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cThere is no reason for fear. It is not like the virus has changed. We think it has been transmitted this way all along,\u201d said Jose Jimenez, a chemist at the University of Colorado who signed the paper. \u201cKnowing about it helps target the measures to control the pandemic more accurately.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Co-author Donald Milton, a professor of environmental health at the University of Maryland, said the WHO\u2019s apparent reluctance to emphasize this aspect of the virus\u2019s ability to spread is probably because of the difficulty identifying tiny infectious particles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cIt is easy to find virus on surfaces, on hands, in large drops,\u201d he said in an emailed statement. \u201cBut, it is very hard to find much less culture virus from the air \u2014 it is a major technical challenge and naive investigators routinely fail to find it. .\u2009.\u2009.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cBecause a person breathes 10,000 to 15,000 liters of air a day and it only takes one infectious dose in that volume of air, sampling 100 or even 1000 liters of air and not finding virus is meaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\"><em><span class=\" font--body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\" data-qa=\"interstitial-link-wrapper\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/brazil-oxford-astrazeneca-sinovac-coronavirus-vaccine-trials\/2020\/07\/01\/53db68fa-bad0-11ea-80b9-40ece9a701dc_story.html?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_33\" class=\"\"  data-qa=\"interstitial-link\">Brazil, ravaged by the coronavirus, becomes key testing ground for vaccine<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Whatever the verdict on transmissibility, the paper is another headache for the WHO as it seeks to lead the response while fending off months of criticism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">In the early days of the crisis, WHO repeated Chinese claims on case numbers and transmission uncritically. When questioned, WHO officials defended Beijing, with the director-general, Tedros, going so far as to personally laud Chinese President Xi Jinping\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Tedros\u2019s defenders thought he was merely being diplomatic. It is true that as a member-state organization, the WHO could not compel China to provide accurate data \u2014 or march in to collect it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">But by early February, even the organization\u2019s traditional supporters, including current and former advisers, were expressing concern about the praise, worried that the tone was undermining other aspects of the response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">In news conferences, Tedros and other top officials tried to deliver an important message \u2014 \u201ctest, test, test\u201d \u2014 but were often pulled off course by questions about the organization\u2019s ties to China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\"><em><span class=\" font--body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\" data-qa=\"interstitial-link-wrapper\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2020\/04\/29\/studies-leave-question-airborne-coronavirus-transmission-unanswered\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_41\" class=\"\"  data-qa=\"interstitial-link\">Studies leave question of \u2018airborne\u2019 coronavirus transmission unanswered<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">As the crisis spread from Asia to Europe and the United States, President Trump seized on the critique, using the agency\u2019s treatment of China to divert attention from shortcomings in the U.S. response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">In April, Trump announced that he was freezing all new funding to the organization. In late May, he said the United States planned to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/05\/29\/trump-china-hong-kong-who\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_44\"  target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">withdraw from the organization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Jimenez said the scientists\u2019 purpose was not to hurt the agency, but merely to encourage it to consider new information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">\u201cOur group of scientists doesn\u2019t want to do anything that would undermine the WHO as an organization,\u201d he said. \u201cWe only want it to adapt its guidance on aerosol transmission to the increasing evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"link-box\" class=\"link-box b pa-md mb-lg-mod brad-4\" data-qa=\"link-box\">\n<div class=\"pt-xs pt-md-ns relative \" data-qa=\"content\" data-amp-bind-class=\"!isExpanded ?
