We\u2019ve broken down everything you need to know about the ruthless, archaic practice:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>What Is Vivisection?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Merriam-Webster defines vivisection as \u201cthe cutting of or operation on a living animal usually for physiological or pathological investigation\u201d or\u2014broadly\u2014\u201canimal experimentation especially if considered to cause distress to the subject.\u201d To put it even more simply, vivisection <em>is<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/\" >animal testing<\/a>\u2014think of the two as synonymous. If you\u2019ve seen <em>Legally Blonde 2<\/em> or if you\u2019ve ever opted for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/living\/personal-care-fashion\/these-companies-dont-test-on-animals\/\" >wet <em>n<\/em> wild<\/a> mascara over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/living\/personal-care-fashion\/beauty-brands-that-you-thought-were-cruelty-free-but-arent\/\" >Maybelline<\/a> because the former uses PETA\u2019s Global <a href=\"https:\/\/crueltyfree.peta.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beauty Without Bunnies<\/a> logo, you probably already realize that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/animal-testing-bad-science\/\" >animal testing is bad<\/a>. During the Roman Empire, Galen cut open monkeys, pigs, sheep, and goats. The conclusions he drew about human anatomy based on his dissections were reportedly flawed\u2014a phenomenon we see often in today\u2019s ineffective animal tests when lives and precious resources are wasted by trying to infect\u00a0animals with diseases that they would never normally contract.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_844800\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter fbx-instance\">\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jelly-Texas-AM.jpg\" class=\"fbx-link\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"has-caption size-large wp-image-844800 has-caption-early has-caption-early has-caption-early has-caption-early has-caption-early\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jelly-Texas-AM-602x293-1576625014.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jelly-Texas-AM-602x293-1576625014.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Jelly-Texas-AM-768x374-1576625014.jpg 768w\" alt=\"Dog suffering from MD at Texas A&amp;M University\" width=\"602\" height=\"293\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the notorious canine muscular dystrophy (MD) laboratory at <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/french-dog-laboratory-animal-testing\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas A&amp;M University<\/a>, dogs who were deliberately bred to develop this crippling muscle disease struggled to walk and swallow. Analysis of MD experiments using dogs has shown that there are serious pitfalls when trying to apply their results to humans. Nearly 40 years of these tests have failed to result in a single cure or treatment that reverses MD symptoms in humans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>What Do Vivisectors Do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Much like Galen, today\u2019s vivisectors experiment on and almost always kill animals in the name of \u201cscience.\u201d Poisoning, shocking, burning, and killing animals is all in a day\u2019s work for vivisectors.\u00a0Because many states\u2019 anti-cruelty statutes include language that exempts abuse of animals in laboratories, vivisectors are given a pass to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/how-to-get-away-with-murder-do-it-in-a-lab\/\" >get away with murder<\/a>. And they often use <em>our<\/em> tax dollars to do so\u2014for example, over the course of the last 13 years, National Institutes of Health <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.peta.org\/nih-monkey-torture\/#action\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experimenter Elisabeth Murray<\/a> has received more than $36 million in taxpayer funding to frighten monkeys with rubber snakes and spiders, allegedly to study mental illness in humans\u2014and not one treatment or cure for humans has come out of it. To learn more about what\u2019s wrong with vivisection, check out these <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/top-five-reasons-stop-animal-testing\/\" >top five reasons to stop animal testing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_967271\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter fbx-instance\">\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/animal_testing_vivisection.jpg\" class=\"fbx-link\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"has-caption size-large wp-image-967271 has-caption-early has-caption-early has-caption-early has-caption-early has-caption-early\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/animal_testing_vivisection-602x296.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/animal_testing_vivisection-602x296.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/animal_testing_vivisection-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/animal_testing_vivisection-768x378.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/animal_testing_vivisection.jpg 1200w\" alt=\"what is vivisection?\" width=\"602\" height=\"296\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This archaic method for raising ticks was developed in the 1930s and is still used today in some laboratories, even though newer, non-animal methods are available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"emphasis-table\">\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>You can call it <\/strong>vivisection<strong>, or you can call it <\/strong>animal testing<strong>\u2014any way you spin it, animals will never be ours to experiment on.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Which Animals Are Used in Animal Testing (Vivisection)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At any given moment, <em>millions<\/em> of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/mice-rats-laboratories\/\" >mice<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/mice-rats-laboratories\/\" >rats<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/rabbits-laboratories\/\" >rabbits<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/primates-laboratories\/\" >primates<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/cats-laboratories\/\" >cats<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/dogs-laboratories\/\" >dogs<\/a>, and other animals are locked inside barren cages in\u00a0laboratories across the U.S.\u00a0They languish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration, ache with loneliness, and long to be free.<\/p>\n<p>In Murray\u2019s laboratory, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/nih-monkey-experiments-spiders-snakes\/\" >sections of monkeys\u2019 skulls are carved out<\/a> and toxins are injected into their brains. At\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/blog\/johns-hopkins-owl-laboratory-torment-death\/\" >Johns Hopkins University<\/a>, experimenter Shreesh Mysore holds <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/features\/barn-owls\/\" >barn owls<\/a> captive in his laboratory, cutting into their skulls and poking electrodes around in their brains. Some of the dogs blinked and even whimpered during the painful procedure, indicating that they were not adequately anesthetized. Imagine if this pain were inflicted on your beloved canine companion.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Are Vivisection and Dissection the Same Thing? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cVivisection,\u201d an early\u201318<sup>th<\/sup> century word, is actually a combination of the Latin \u201cvivus\u201d (\u201cliving\u201d) and the English word \u201cdissection.\u201d When pertaining to animals, dissection is the act of cutting up or dismembering a body. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-experimentation\/animals-used-experimentation-factsheets\/dissection-lessons-cruelty\/\" >Dissection<\/a> is most common in classroom settings\u2014typically, cats, frogs, pigs, rats, fish, and invertebrate animals are the ones students are instructed to cut open for a grade, but others, including sharks, birds, and turtles, are dissected, too.
