Four of Banksy\u2019s artworks are in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBanksy always surprises us and today I want to surprise him,\u201d said event coordinator Yamen Elabed in a video <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B2_0HAYzba4&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;fbclid=IwAR3ouSUaXX3KcqI5Rd6QGuVIXQBkyKknFvg1Du7z21dQRv0lugLovcWLwjk\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">message to Banksy<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Elabed said he put together the exhibition \u201cto show Banksy that we are grateful for the support\u201d. \u201cI just want the message of thanks to reach <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/banksy\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Banksy<\/a> \u2026 he has helped our economy with \u2018alternative\u2019 tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month Banksy <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-53564953\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">auctioned three paintings<\/a> for \u00a32.2m in London and donated the proceeds to a hospital in Bethlehem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"img-2\" helped to diversify tourism in Bethlehem, a major pilgrimage destination.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-arts\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThey [tourists] only know Bethlehem is where Jesus was born, the Church of the Nativity \u2013 which I am proud of \u2013 but Banksy\u2019s idea is also to see where there are 3 million Palestinians living, in the West Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 300 people visited the open-air exhibition. Almost all were local people, as the pandemic has meant far fewer tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Each visitor was given a free face mask decorated with a Banksy print on arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Visits to Bethlehem have ground to a halt during the pandemic, a devastating blow to the tourist-based economy, said Elabed. \u201cThis city relies on tourism. So many people are now out of a job, with the closing of hotels, souvenir shops, many restaurants, tour companies and a lack of work for tour guides like myself. We all are just waiting for tourism to return.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"element element-video fig--has-shares fig--narrow-caption\" data-canonical-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B2_0HAYzba4\" data-component=\"video-inbody-embed\">\n<div class=\"u-responsive-aligner\">\n<div class=\"embed-video-wrapper u-responsive-ratio\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/B2_0HAYzba4?wmode=opaque&amp;feature=oembed\" width=\"460\" height=\"259\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"element element-video fig--has-shares fig--narrow-caption\" data-canonical-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B2_0HAYzba4\" data-component=\"video-inbody-embed\"><figcaption class=\"caption caption--img\"><strong>Video message to Banksy, produced by Murad Abu Srour and Abedalrahman Hassan<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inspiringcity.com\/2019\/01\/19\/the-graffiti-of-the-west-bank-barrier-in-bethlehem\/\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">first artwork appeared<\/a> in Palestine 15 years ago, Banksy has become a key part of the city\u2019s tourist attractions \u2013 his <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/mar\/03\/banksy-opens-bethlehem-barrier-wall-hotel\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">Walled Off<\/a> hotel famously claiming to offer the \u201cworst view of any hotel in the world\u201d to a stream of international guests since its opening in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have accused Banksy of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/banksys-west-bank-hotel-causes-anger-among-some-palestinians\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">trivialising<\/a> the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and providing an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/middle-east\/walled-off-hotel-banksy-guesthouse-palestinians-bethlehem-israel-separation-barrier-graffiti-artist-a7617391.html\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">unwelcome distraction<\/a> from the work of local artists. Both Palestinians and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/world-news\/.premium-banksy-s-latest-pro-palestine-stunt-sparks-spat-with-top-israeli-art-collector-1.6637712\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">Israelis have criticised<\/a> aspects of his art.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-news\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/29a1e6d925a8addb57a54acc30302cb00d6391c7\/0_118_1024_614\/master\/1024.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=f207ed7ed0a25997e79010e4e15e4127\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"rich-link__title\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/mar\/03\/banksy-opens-bethlehem-barrier-wall-hotel\" class=\"rich-link__link\" ><strong> Read More: &#8216;Worst view in the world&#8217;: Banksy opens hotel overlooking Bethlehem wall<\/strong> <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cI do appreciate deeply Banksy as an artist and love his work,\u201d said Abdelfattah Abusrour, general director of Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society, an arts organisation based in Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201csome paintings seem naive, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-39156386\" class=\"u-underline\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">like the fight with pillows<\/a>\u201d, he said. \u201cThe fight was never between people as individuals, but against a system \u2026 as long as there is occupation and injustice such \u2018declarations\u2019 are irrelevant and non-respectful to the suffering of the oppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abusrour added: \u201cWe didn\u2019t receive a penny from the Walled Off hotel. Your art is much appreciated. And thank you Yamen for gathering us her here in this beautiful event,\u201d said Amera Qumseya.<\/p>\n<p>Elabed said the danger he believes Banksy put himself in when he first spray-painted the Israeli West Bank barrier warrants respect from Palestinians. \u201cIt was a risk because during the first uprising and second uprising drawing graffiti on the wall was forbidden. Many people got hurt or arrested for doing graffiti. So Banksy did a lot for Palestinians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see him again in Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Banksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s.
