8 Oct 2020 – <\/em>A telling piece in The Nation<\/a> this week reports some of the conflicts of interest the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation holds in the world\u2019s quest for a COVID-19 vaccine. According to the article, the foundation\u2019s investments in companies working to develop COVID-19 vaccines put Gates \u201cin a position to potentially reap considerable financial gains from the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nation cites<\/a> the example of the foundation\u2019s $40 million stake in CureVac, a German pharmaceutical company whose stock soared 400% after going public in August. A similar Nation article<\/a> from earlier this year reported the Gates Foundation also holds corporate stocks and bonds in drug companies Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis and Sanofi, and the foundation gives these same companies charitable grants for projects like developing new drugs.<\/p>\n

AstraZeneca, the British pharmaceutical company that gained an exclusive license to control the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Oxford University research, is considered a frontrunner in the vaccine race. According to The Nation: \u201cGates himself described his foundation as intimately involved in the partnership between AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.\u201d Gates had the leverage to push the university \u2026 because the foundation is one of the founders and largest funders of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, which in turn funds the University of Oxford\u2019s vaccine development (to the tune of some $384 million<\/a>).\u201d<\/p>\n

AstraZeneca also received $750 million<\/a> from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, an organization the Gates Foundation helped<\/a> set up and continues to fund<\/a> to this day. Despite questions<\/a> on the safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine, governments worldwide have already bought it, on the taxpayers dime.<\/p>\n

Also notable is the Gates Foundation\u2019s grants, totaling $20 million<\/a>, to Moderna, whose vaccine has also been described as a COVID-19 frontrunner. The foundation has a \u201cglobal health project framework agreement<\/a>\u201d with the company, agreeing to give it up to $100 million to develop its mRNA technology, in exchange for receiving \u201ccertain non-exclusive licenses,\u201d which have yet to be publicly specified.<\/p>\n

Even with all this, Gates doesn\u2019t publicly disclose his conflicts of interest when appearing on TV as an expert on COVID-19. And, as The Nation reports, when Gates wrote an article<\/a> in the New England Journal of Medicine, he simply listed his conflicts of interest as \u201cnumerous.\u201d According to Forbes, Gates has seen his personal net worth increase<\/a> by more than $10 billion since the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Despite the Gates Foundation\u2019s candid declaration<\/a> to pursue \u201cmutually beneficial opportunities\u201d with vaccine manufacturers, it is rare<\/a> to find reporting in mainstream media on the foundation\u2019s conflicts of interest. This may be because the foundation funds a number of major media outlets, including<\/a> NPR, BBC, ABC and Al Jazeera, as well as publications like The Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times. The Guardian\u2019s entire \u201cGlobal Development\u201d section is made possible through a partnership<\/a> with the Gates Foundation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The foundation also invests in journalism training programs. According to the Seattle Times, \u201cexperts coached in Gates-funded programs write columns<\/a> that appear in media outlets from The New York Times to the Huffington Post, while digital portals blur the line between journalism and spin.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., chairman of Children\u2019s Health Defense, The Nation\u2019s expos\u00e9 \u201cis a refreshing change for those searching for critical reporting on the self-declared<\/a> \u2018biggest funder of vaccines in the world.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
