Too often we hear that protests do not succeed. That resistance does not achieve results. During Assange\u2019s hearings, the Progressive International hosted the Belmarsh Tribunal in order to put the United States on trial for its imperialist crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n<h3>The Belmarsh Tribunal<\/h3>\n<p>The Belmarsh Tribunal was inspired from the Russell-Sartre Tribunal of 1966, \u201cwhen representatives of 18 countries gathered to hold the United States accountable for their war crimes in Vietnam, in the absence of an international authority that dared to do so.\u201d Tariq Ali present at the Belmarsh Tribunal is known for his testimony at the Russell Tribunal addressing US involvement in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/31A5qwXMLsU\" width=\"750\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\">&lt;span<br \/>\n data-mce-type=&#8221;bookmark&#8221; style=&#8221;display: inline-block; width: 0px;<br \/>\noverflow: hidden; line-height: 0;&#8221;<br \/>\nclass=&#8221;mce_SELRES_start&#8221;&gt;\ufeff&lt;\/span&gt;<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>At the tribunal, we gathered to defend Julian from 175 years in an American prison.<\/strong> To defend the right to publish government policy made behind closed doors. And the right of whistleblowers to expose corruption. It included voices of politicians, journalists, philosophers, human rights lawyers, and many courageous supporters lining the street outside the courthouse of Old Bailey:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be clear: Julian Assange should have never been charged with a crime, unless it\u2019s a crime to expose war crimes.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Roger Waters, Activist, Pink Floyd co-founder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must turn the tables on those who seek to persecute Julian and make them defendants who must answer for their crimes.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Yanis Varoufakis, DiEM25 co-founder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trial in Old Bailey is a farce: a parody to give the appearance of justice over the criminalization of a man who removed the veil over war crimes, surveillance, and corruption.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Alicia Castro, Argentine diplomat, ambassador to the UK 2012-2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found out that, in exchange for financial support, my successor Lenin Moreno agreed to hand over Julian Assange to the United States.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Rafael Correa, former President of Ecuador<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insistence by the Western world, mainly the United States and its British satellite, is to impose one narrative and to prevent other news that might challenge the narrative. That is the war against Julian Assange.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Tariq Ali, activist, historian, journalist, filmmaker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe media that made so much of Wikileaks disclosures is now absent when it comes time to defend the journalist who was their source.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Jeremy Corbyn, former UK Labour party leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian showed us that there is a dark side of the Moon, and that the worst unfreedom is the unfreedom which we experience as freedom.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Slavoj \u017di\u017eek, philosopher and DiEM25 Advisory Panel member<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve cited Wikileaks cables in the International Court of Justice, so it\u2019s striking to me that the person who helped us lead these accountability efforts is in jail.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2014 Jennifer Robinson, human rights lawyer<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Why Belmarsh?<\/h3>\n<p>Belmarsh is the prison where Julian is currently held. 11 October marked 18 months in the jail designed to hold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2014\/mar\/21\/belmarsh-jail-most-dangerous-prisoners\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terrorists<\/a>. While Belmarsh has reportedly improved since being deemed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/julian-assange-being-held-in-uk-belmarsh-prison-known-as-britains-guantanamo-bay-2019-4\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britain\u2019s Guantanamo<\/a>\u201d, Julian Assange\u2019s detention is excessive and clearly meant to further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/amp\/s\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/31\/world\/europe\/julian-assange-torture-un.amp.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">torture<\/a> the Wikileaks founder.<\/p>\n<h3>The Case against Julian Assange<\/h3>\n<p>Make no mistake: Assange is persecuted because Wikileaks publishes material governments do not want you to see. The US government has made no illusion about their case, charging him under the Espionage Act. Espionage Act charges against a publisher would criminalise journalists, the Obama administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/julian-assange-unlikely-to-face-us-charges-over-publishing-classified-documents\/2013\/11\/25\/dd27decc-55f1-11e3-8304-caf30787c0a9_story.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decided<\/a> after mulling over charges against Assange.<\/p>\n<p>We must not forget the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/thegrayzone.com\/2020\/10\/12\/julian-assange-trial-freedom-speech\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unjust proceedings<\/a> occurring along with the case itself. Technical issues prevented Assange representatives from being heard and the press was frequently barred from video streaming access. We expand on these and other problems in <a href=\"https:\/\/diem25.org\/julian-assanges-trial-part-increasing-encroachment-democracy\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our trial coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, a verdict on Assange extradition is set for January 4, 2021 \u2014 though this is seen as just the beginning of the legal saga, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/10\/2\/trial-of-julian-assange\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appeals are likely to ensue. <\/a>While prosecution and defense lawyers prepare closing arguments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2020\/10\/12\/the-tortured-trial-of-julian-assange\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which will be written and not delivered orally in November,<\/a> Assange remains in Belmarsh with growing concerns over self-harm, including suicide.<\/p>\n<h3>Resistance without End!<\/h3>\n<p>As long as Julian remains in Belmarsh, the Belmarsh Tribunal will resist extradition. If Julian is extradited, we will resist the case seeking to shut him away.
