&#8211; <em>Hunger is on the rise in southern Madagascar due to consecutive years of drought,\u00a0affecting half the region\u2019s population, or 1.5 million people, and forcing most families to eat insects, the World Food Programme reported today.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraphs-items paragraphs-items-field-news-story paragraphs-items-field-news-story-full paragraphs-items-full\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-news-story field-type-paragraphs field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<div class=\"entity entity-paragraphs-item paragraphs-item-one-column-text\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-text-column field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The figure is three times the number projected mid-year, with women and children comprising most of those experiencing \u201ccrisis\u201d or \u201cemergency\u201d hunger conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The UN agency pointed out that Madagascar already had the world\u2019s 10th highest rate of stunting, as almost half of all children under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition.<\/p>\n<h3>Foraging for food<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAs hunger numbers rise, so does the proportion of families who are resorting to crisis-coping mechanisms. \u00a0The majority of them are having to eat bugs. \u00a0They are selling off lifesaving livelihood assets, farm implements, kitchen utensils,\u201d said Tomson Phiri, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/\" class=\"word-link\" title=\"World Food Programme\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WFP<\/a> spokesperson in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>The hunger and malnutrition is the result of three years of ruined harvests, hampering access to food and affecting people across 10 districts.<\/p>\n<p>WFP has described the situation as \u201cextremely WFP conducted an assessment in Amboasary,\u00a0the hardest-hit district, which revealed that three-quarters of children were forced to drop out of school so they could help their families forage for food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the women that we spoke to said they had nothing to feed their young children except the red cactus pears that grow on the roadside\u201d, said Mr. Phiri.<\/p>\n<h3>Hot meals and assistance<\/h3>\n<p>As part of its drought response, WFP began life-saving emergency food assistance in September, reaching more than 100,000 people in Amboasary.<\/p>\n<p>This support has included in-kind food distributions but also hot meals for particularly malnourished children and elderly persons.<\/p>\n<p>Some 576,000 people in the nine other districts are also receiving assistance during the lean season, which runs through December.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Phiri said given the gravity of the situation, the agency plans to continue scaling up operations through next June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe additionally seek to help the challenges that are being faced by rural women, who often are prevented from owning land and agricultural assets, as well as face discriminatory
