The words to this lyrical poem are presented in a rhythmic and evocative cadence to the delicate and haunting melody, A Thousand Splendid Suns<\/em>. \u00a0This melody was composed by the talented Australian folk-song writer, singer, and diplomat, Ian \u201cFred\u201d Smith. The singing is by gifted Australian songstress, Liz Frencham. The title of this melody was adapted from a Seventeenth-Century Afghan poem, written by Saib e Tabrizi<\/em>,<\/strong>. The version in my possession was sung at the Concert for Uruzgan<\/em>,<\/strong> at the Burrinja Cultural Centre, Sydney, Australia, on June 19, 2014. The website for Mr. Smith is: www.fredsmith.com.au<\/a> <\/strong>I am indebted to Mr. Smith and Ms. Frencham for doing more to alert us to the horrors of the endless Afghan war, than all the news printed or spoken by politicians and panderers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

POEM<\/strong>
\nPashtun Woman<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/strong><\/p>\n

I must now leave this land I love,
\nOr perish, and remain forever.<\/p>\n

I will miss blue skies high above,
\nMountains, valleys, rivers, I have wandered.<\/p>\n

There is no reason to remain,
\nAll life and memory are now deeply stained.<\/p>\n

They said they came to make us free,
\nBut all they brought was misery.
\nI must make a sacred journey from my home,
\nSeek life anew far from where I was born.<\/p>\n

My heart and spirit are now broken and forlorn,
\nBuried forever in this earth scorched and torn.<\/p>\n

II<\/strong><\/p>\n

I will join others for a distant walk,
\nThey say they know where they are going.<\/p>\n

They say their brothers have gone before.
\nAnd there found safety from the war.<\/p>\n

They whisper Peshawar<\/em> many times,
\nI will follow them, but perhaps there die.<\/p>\n

My eyes are swollen from my tears,
\nI travel blindly, no longer feeling fear.
\n\u00a0<\/strong>
\nSoldiers and warriors promised us peace, and so much more,
\nBut they were only here to make a war.<\/p>\n

Their words were lies, absent any sincere meaning,
\nOur bodies now lie dead or bleeding.<\/p>\n

III<\/strong><\/p>\n

What did my tiny children do?
\nThey were so innocent as they played.<\/p>\n

They brought us joy and laughter,
\nNow I place flowers on their graves.<\/p>\n

My husband is gone, no longer here,
\nBuried beneath rubble and rocks I fear.<\/p>\n

He said he must go to fight the foe.
\nIt was written he said, so it must be so.<\/p>\n

Now I pack soiled sour grains to eat,
\nTie my strongest sandals on my feet.<\/p>\n

I carry now my few remains,
\nTattered photos covered with blood stains.<\/p>\n

IV<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do they know or care what they have done?
\nWith their lies and promises, what have they won!<\/p>\n

They have planted endless grief,
\nThe war they cause will never cease.<\/p>\n

We are Pashtun<\/em>, brave and strong,
\nBut now all we have left are poems and song.<\/p>\n

I go now, and close the gate,
\nI go now, and follow fate.<\/p>\n

Comment:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Estimates of the number of Afghan refugees are difficult to determine with exactness. International authorities conclude there are more than six million Afghani refugees and internally displaced persons. Most of this number of refugees and displaced people traveled to Iran and to Pakistan, many settled amidst uncertainty and deprivation in the town of Peshawar, Pakistan.<\/p>\n

The full extent of their plight in these countries is often unknown. They are unwanted and subject to abuse and exploitation. While Afghan diaspora<\/em> exist across the world, many finding new lives in Europe or the United States, the number finding safety is low, and the world seems to have ignored their plight. It is, in many ways, genocide, of the Afghan people, a genocide rooted in abandonment and powerlessness at the hands of hegemonic powers.<\/p>\n

And still the USA and its NATO allies insist on remaining in Afghanistan with promises of humanitarian aid, and vocal support from a puppet Afghanistan government. The scenario is now well known. It has been used by the USA scores of times, at the expense of the lives and wellbeing of a nation\u2019s citizens.\u00a0 The scenario: Overthrow and existing government alien to USA and NATO agendas. Establish a puppet government.\u00a0 Make financial payoffs to the leaders of the puppet government, and gradually insert troops under the guise of assisting to train a local army, and to reconstruct a nation.<\/p>\n

No where! No where! Has this policy, strategy, and tactic proven more destructive that in Afghanistan. The death and destruction has proven endless, and the USA military occupation and war in Afghanistan is now considered endless.\u00a0 Why? Ask the refugees! Ask the USA military\/industrial complex! Ask any true humanitarian agency! It is the position of this ancient land, a bridge \u2013 the Khyber Pass connection between Afghanistan and Pakistan, connecting the Capitol of Kabul with Peshawar.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan is bordered by Iran, Turkmenistan Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan \u2013 a \u201cStan\u201d amidst \u201cStans\u2019.\u201d Afghanistan is strategically located.\u00a0 Strategic for whom, and for what purposes! Afghanistan is a pawn in the global game of world order, in which hegemonic powers struggle for ascendancy and control at the cost of human lives and suffering.<\/p>\n

I have often wondered: is the war about the heroin-addiction industry \u2013 crime cartels and nations seeking power and position? It is said 90% of the world\u2019s opium is grown in Afghanistan. It is alleged Taliban forces, exacting tolls religious fanaticism, ended opium production, while the presence of United States and NATO occupation increased this percentage. There is too much money to be made by nations and cartels to yield control.\u00a0 Shame! ___________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n
