Introduced by Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), the approved <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/01\/11\/us\/articles-impeachment-trump.html\" >resolution<\/a> states that Trump &#8220;engaged in high crimes and misdemeanors by inciting violence against the government of the United States.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The document notes that while members of Congress met on January 6 to certify President-elect Joe Biden&#8217;s Electoral College victory, &#8220;Trump repeatedly issued false statements asserting that the presidential election results were the product of widespread fraud and should not be accepted by the American people or certified by state or federal officials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the president&#8217;s inflammatory speech at a rally in Washington, D.C., a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol complex, delaying the certification of Biden&#8217;s win for several hours as lawmakers and congressional staff hid and fled for their lives. Five people\u2014including one U.S. Capitol Police officer\u2014were left dead and scores were wounded.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/01\/13\/liz-cheney-removal-impeachment-vote-458889\" >Notably<\/a>, House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, voted in favor of impeaching Trump. (Photo: Saul Loeb\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The advocacy group Public Citizen <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Public_Citizen\/status\/1349466250221535232\" >tweeted<\/a> Wednesday that &#8220;if Congress had a shred of decency, this impeachment would be unanimous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU, also responding on Twitter, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACLU\/status\/1349475783157407744\" >declared<\/a> that &#8220;accountability doesn&#8217;t end here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/01\/13\/amid-reports-mcconnell-backs-trump-impeachment-gop-leader-urged-prove-it-starting\" >reports<\/a> that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) privately supports impeaching the president, the soon-to-be minority leader confirmed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/01\/13\/fascist-enabling-coward-mcconnell-declines-reconvene-senate-trial-house-moves\" >reporting <\/a>that he won&#8217;t reconvene the Senate early to hold a trial before President-elect Joe Biden&#8217;s inauguration on January 20.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/house-trump-impeachment-vote-01-13-21\/h_f6bd1731a6175d63b450aebd7b412ebf\" >said <\/a>in a statement after the House vote that &#8220;I believe it will best serve our nation if Congress and the executive branch spend the next seven days completely focused on facilitating a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power to the incoming Biden administration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In response to the House vote, a diverse collection of political figures and advocacy groups <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/01\/13\/mcconnell-urged-finish-job-and-reconvene-senate-put-twice-impeached-trump-trial\" >sent<\/a> a clear message to McConnell: &#8220;Finish the job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On December 18, 2019, the House <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/12\/18\/charged-abuse-power-and-obstruction-congress-trump-impeached-us-house\" >voted<\/a> largely along party lines to pass two articles of impeachment put forth by the Democratic majority\u2014one for abuse of power and the other for obstruction of Congress.
