Rachel Findlay, the founder and director of Nuclear Dialogue, an organization that brought together members of the peace movement with non-elected public officials for dialogues during the Cold War, told that she once attended a meeting in Washington and sat next to an American General at dinner. He said with deep conviction,<\/p>\n

“The only language the Soviets understand is the threat of force.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After a while, she asked him,<\/p>\n

“Would you yield to the threat of force?”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He looked at her in disbelief and said,<\/p>\n

“Never! Are you out of your mind?”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/em>Dietrich Fischer (1941-2015) from M\u00fcnsingen, Switzerland, got a Licentiate in Mathematics from the University of Bern 1968 and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University 1976. Fischer was a MacArthur Fellow in International Peace and Security at Princeton University 1986-88, has taught mathematics, computer science, economics and peace studies at various universities, and been a consultant to the United Nations. He was co-founder, with Johan Galtung, of the <\/em>TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment<\/a> in 1993<\/em>.<\/p>\n
