{"id":17902,"date":"2012-03-19T12:00:35","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=17902"},"modified":"2012-03-12T19:47:32","modified_gmt":"2012-03-12T19:47:32","slug":"peru-passes-monumental-ten-year-ban-on-genetically-engineered-foods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2012\/03\/peru-passes-monumental-ten-year-ban-on-genetically-engineered-foods\/","title":{"rendered":"Peru Passes Monumental Ten Year Ban on Genetically Engineered Foods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>March 10, 2012 &#8211;<\/em> In a massive blow to multinational agribiz corporations such as \u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/naturalsociety.com\/blind-health-forbes-magazine-declares-monsanto-company-of-the-year\/\" >Monsanto<\/a>, Bayer, and Dow, Peru has officially passed a law banning\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/naturalsociety.com\/genetically-modified-foods\/\" title=\"genetically modified\" >genetically modified<\/a>\u00a0ingredients anywhere within the country for a full decade before coming up for another review. \u00a0Peru\u2019s\u00a0Plenary Session of the Congress made the decision 3 years after the decree was written despite previous governmental pushes for GM legalization due largely to the pressure from\u00a0farmers that together form the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livinginperu.com\/blogs\/travel\/1805\" >Parque de la Papa in Cusco<\/a>, a farming community of 6,000 people that represent six communities. They worry the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will compromise the native species of Peru, such as the giant white corn, purple corn and, of course, the famous species of Peruvian potatoes.\u00a0Anibal Huerta, President of Peru\u2019s Agrarian Commission, said the ban was needed to prevent the\u00a0\u201ddanger that can arise from the use of biotechnology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the ban will curb the planting and importation of GMOs in the country, a test conducted by the\u00a0Peruvian Association of Consumers and Users (ASPEC) at the time of the ban\u2019s implementation found that\u00a077 percent of supermarket products tested contained GM contaminants.\u00a0\u201dResearch by ASPEC confirms something that Peruvians knew all along: GM foods are on the shelves of our markets and wineries, and consumers buy them and take them into their homes to eat without knowing it.
