href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/15-02-2021-who-lists-two-additional-covid-19-vaccines-for-emergency-use-and-covax-roll-out\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> two versions of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID vaccine for emergency use despite growing safety concerns in other countries and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/astrazeneca-under-scrutiny-again-covid-vaccine\/\" >earlier questions<\/a> about the drugmaker\u2019s clinical trials.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p>Countries like the U.S., UK, Israel, Saudi Arabia and others have their own regulatory process for granting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework\/emergency-use-authorization\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency use approval <\/a>for vaccines and other drugs, but those countries that lack the necessary regulatory framework <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/coronavirus-who-approves-emergency-use-of-biontech-pfizer-covid-vaccine\/a-56107389\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rely on WHO<\/a> to vet vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>WHO\u2019s approval of the vaccines produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/extranet.who.int\/pqweb\/vaccines\/covid-19-vaccine-chadox1-s-recombinant\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AstraZeneca-SKBio<\/a> (Republic of Korea) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/extranet.who.int\/pqweb\/vaccines\/covid-19-vaccine-chadox1-s-recombinant-covishield\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serum Institute of India<\/a> paves the way for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-who-astrazeneca-idUSKBN2AF1KC\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 300 million doses<\/a> of AstraZeneca to reach 145 countries in the first half of 2021, through <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/bill-gates-neo-feudalism-farmer-bill\/\" >Bill Gates<\/a>\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/15-02-2021-who-lists-two-additional-covid-19-vaccines-for-emergency-use-and-covax-roll-out\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVAX<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p>But while WHO is moving forward, other countries are hitting pause on AstraZeneca amid ongoing reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-europe-astrazeneca\/astrazeneca-vaccine-faces-resistance-in-europe-after-health-workers-suffer-side-effects-idUSKBN2AI237\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">side effects<\/a> and lack of efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/pharma\/fda-could-reject-astra-zeneca-s-covid-vaccine-efficacy-and-manufacturing-shortfalls-analyst#:~:text=FDA%20could%20reject%20AstraZeneca\" s%20COVID%20vaccine%20on%20efficacy%20and%20manufacturing%20shortfalls%3A%20analyst,-by%20Arlene%20Weintraub&amp;text=It%20was%20bad%20enough%20when,recently%20emerged%20in%20South%20Africa.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fierce Pharma<\/a>, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may not approve the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine due to inconsistent manufacturing concerns and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wits.ac.za\/covid19\/covid19-news\/latest\/oxford-covid-19-vaccine-trial-results.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> released earlier this month showing the vaccine\u2019s efficacy against mild and moderate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\" >COVID-19<\/a> cases was only 21.9%, well below the 50% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biospace.com\/article\/fda-s-guidance-on-a-covid-19-vaccine-must-be-at-least-50-percent-effective\/#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Food%20and%20Drug,placebo%20in%20preventing%20COVID%2D19.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threshold required<\/a> for vaccine approval.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/astrazeneca-vaccine-doesnt-protect-against-mild-and-moderate-cases-from-south-africa-strain-11612700385\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, South Africa suspended plans to distribute the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine when the same study showed only 10% efficacy at protecting against mild and moderate COVID-19 cases from the new South African <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-new-covid-19-strain-in-south-africa-what-we-know-11609971229?mod=article_inline\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">variant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s health minister, Zweli Mkhize, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/astrazeneca-vaccine-doesnt-protect-against-mild-and-moderate-cases-from-south-africa-strain-11612700385\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cthe country would temporarily halt a planned rollout of the vaccine until there was more information on the vaccine\u2019s efficacy\u201d and instead <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2021\/02\/south-africa-suspends-use-astrazenecas-covid-19-vaccine-after-it-fails-clearly-stop\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distribute<\/a> the as of yet unapproved <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/news\/johnson-johnson-pauses-covid-vaccine-trials\/\" >Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/a> vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/en\/news\/ema-recommends-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca-authorisation-eu#:~:text=COVID%2D19%20Vaccine%20AstraZeneca%20is,Commission%20on%2029%20January%202021.\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Medicines Agency<\/a> authorized the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine for anyone over the age of 18, Germany did not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2021\/01\/30\/germany-recommends-astrazeneca-covid-vaccine-only-for-people-under-65\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authorize<\/a> the vaccine for use in people 65 or over citing a \u201clack of efficacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-55901957\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>, France\u2019s health regulator said there was still not enough data about the effectiveness of the vaccine in people over 65. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.at\/20210201\/austria-recommends-astrazeneca-vaccine-only-for-under-65s\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austria<\/a>, Belgium, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2021\/feb\/02\/coronavirus-live-news-eu-tightens-rules-for-foreign-visitors-first-covid-vaccines-arrive-in-south-africa\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poland<\/a> and Switzerland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/belgium-like-other-eu-states-limits-astrazeneca-jab\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also recommended<\/a> the vaccine not be given to older people, citing insufficient evidence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-europe-astrazeneca\/astrazeneca-vaccine-faces-resistance-in-europe-after-health-workers-suffer-side-effects-idUSKBN2AI237\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters reported today<\/a> that health authorities in some European countries are experiencing resistance to AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID vaccine after hospital staff and front-line workers experienced adverse reactions. Although a spokesman for AstraZeneca said side effects are to be expected, France, Germany and Sweden are experiencing more side effects from the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine than from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/moderna-pfizer-vaccines-blood-clots-brain-inflammation-heart-attacks\/\" >Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine<\/a>, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Two regions in Sweden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/nyheter\/inrikes\/astra-zeneca-om-biverkningarna-inte-forvantat\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily halted<\/a> vaccinations last week after 400 people received the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine and 100 people experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/top-news\/articles\/2021-02-18\/astrazeneca-vaccine-faces-resistance-in-europe-after-health-workers-suffer-side-effects\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adverse reactions<\/a> leaving them unable to work. Another region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/nyheter\/inrikes\/astra-zeneca-om-biverkningarna-inte-forvantat\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">observed<\/a> a surprising number of side effects after a mass vaccination effort of more than 500 people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere seems to have been a larger proportion of side effects than expected,\u201d Andreas Heddini, medical director of AstraZeneca in the Nordic region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svt.se\/nyheter\/inrikes\/astra-zeneca-om-biverkningarna-inte-forvantat\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told SVT News<\/a>. \u201cWe have seen that somewhere around 10 percent of those vaccinated are expected to have side effects of this kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multiple adverse reactions were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/astrazeneca-under-scrutiny-again-covid-vaccine\/\" >reported<\/a> during the 2020 AstraZeneca trials, including spinal cord damage consistent with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/news\/the-intertwined-history-of-myelitis-and-vaccines\/\" >transverse myelitis<\/a>, death and acute neuro encephalopathy. Although global trials were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazeneca.com\/content\/astraz\/media-centre\/press-releases\/2020\/statement-on-astrazeneca-oxford-sars-cov-2-vaccine-azd1222-covid-19-vaccine-trials-temporary-pause.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily paused<\/a>, the trial in India moved forward and Indian Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/astrazeneca-under-scrutiny-again-covid-vaccine\/\" >said<\/a> during a press conference that the adverse event would \u201cnot affect the timeline in any manner whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AstraZeneca vaccine is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/health\/oxford-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine.html\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different<\/a> from Pfizer and Moderna\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/what-mrna-how-pfizer-moderna-tapped-new-tech-make-coronavirus-n1248054\" >mRNA<\/a> COVID vaccines. The AstraZeneca vaccine is based on the virus\u2019 genetic instructions for building the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/moderna-pfizer-vaccines-blood-clots-brain-inflammation-heart-attacks\/\" >spike protein<\/a> \u2014 proteins on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/news\/republish\/chds-letter-to-congress-urging-covid-19-origins-investigation\/\" >SARS-CoV-2 virus<\/a> that it uses to enter human cells. Whereas Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines use single-stranded RNA to \u201cstore\u201d these instructions, the AstraZeneca vaccine uses double-stranded DNA. Researchers then added the gene for the coronavirus spike protein to a modified version of a chimpanzee adenovirus that can enter cells.<\/p>\n<p>The AstraZeneca vaccine is similar to the controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laninf\/article\/PIIS1473-3099(20)30515-6\/fulltext\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ebola vaccine<\/a>, a DNA and recombinant-based adenovirus vaccine, which, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/covid-vaccine-could-heighten-hiv-risk-scientists-warn\/\" >The Defender reported<\/a> in December, may put some populations at heightened risk of developing HIV.<\/p>\n<p>Despite AstraZeneca\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2021\/02\/south-africa-suspends-use-astrazenecas-covid-19-vaccine-after-it-fails-clearly-stop\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confusing results<\/a> and efficacy of only 63.09% compared to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/peter-doshi-pfizer-moderna-vaccines-need-more-details-raw-data\/\" >95% efficacy rating<\/a> of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, it is hailed because it is easier and cheaper to produce than other rivals that have already been approved by WHO. WHO is focused on scaling up production and distribution of the vaccine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/15-02-2021-who-lists-two-additional-covid-19-vaccines-for-emergency-use-and-covax-roll-out\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO\u2019s director-general.<\/p>\n<p>The AstraZeneca vaccine will reach the masses through a program called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/covax-facility\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVAX<\/a>,\u201d a mechanism for procurement and distribution of vaccines. COVAX was founded by Bill Gates and is co-led by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) set up in 1999 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/operating-model\/gavis-partnership-model\/bill-melinda-gates-foundation\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seed money<\/a> from the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. Since 1999, the foundation has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/operating-model\/gavis-partnership-model\/bill-melinda-gates-foundation\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a> more $4 billion to GAVI and has a permanent seat on the board.<\/p>\n<p>Gates\u2019 foundation also co-founded the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations (CEPI) <a href=\"https:\/\/cepi.net\/about\/whoweare\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> in 2017 to develop vaccines to stop future epidemics and is a <a href=\"http:\/\/open.who.int\/2020-21\/budget-and-financing\/flow\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major donor<\/a> to WHO second only to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Gates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/bill-gates-backing-boosts-2-billion-doses-astrazeneca-coronavirus-vaccine-2020-6\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a> the manufacturing and distribution of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine through GAVI and CEPI, provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-india-vaccine\/indias-serum-institute-to-get-150-million-from-gates-foundation-for-covid-19-vaccine-idUSKCN2531B4\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">millions<\/a> to the Serum Institute of India to manufacture the vaccine, and is funding the \u201csafety and efficacy\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-vaccine-variants-third-shot-bill-gates\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine in Brazil and South Africa. Although data from these studies have yet to be released, it forms the basis of Gates\u2019 most <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/gates-third-shot-coronavirus-variants\/\" >recent warning<\/a> that a \u201cthird dose of the vaccine,\u201d boosters, or a \u201ctuned vaccine\u201d may be needed to combat coronavirus variants.\u00a0According to GAVI, the Gates Foundation plays a key financial and technical role in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/operating-model\/gavis-partnership-model\/bill-melinda-gates-foundation\" >shaping vaccine markets<\/a>, while providing the data and financial support for market investments. The AstraZeneca vaccine forms the bulk of the stockpile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/health\/who-expert-group-recommends-use-of-astrazeneca-vaccine\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already acquired<\/a> by Gates\u2019 COVAX.<\/p>\n<p>WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/feature-stories\/detail\/the-oxford-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-what-you-need-to-know\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommends<\/a> the use of AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine even in countries that have expressed concerns about safety and efficacy, and for all age groups over 18, including the older populations.
